Hello,

I also have thyroid problems, I have what is called type II hypothyroidism the most under diagnosed form of thyroid as many doctors are not that familiar of how to diagnose and treat a persons thyroid. My blood work will come back saying everything is in the "normal" range, so for over a year I went from doctor to doctor to find one willing to treat my thyroid and not prescribe an anti-depressant (which I refuse to take). I had all the symptoms of hypothyroidism, low basal body temp, cold (esp my hands & feet), extreme fatigue, weight gain, bad menstrual cycles, memory fog, irritability, I was a ghost of my former active self. Every woman in my family has a thyroid problem which made me think what was going on with me had to be my thyroid esp. after ruling out any other conditions, all my lab & blood work would come back normal, infact the doctors would look at me and think I was "making" up all my symptoms when it was obvious I did have low temps. They figured I was just depressed, how frustrating that was, ya you would get depressed too if all of a sudden you lost all your energy, were cold even in summer, and were just irritable and your memory was shot etc.. So this led me into doing my own research (those college course are starting to pay off now) and I found several things that I could do to help with my thyroid as well on how to find a doctor to treat my thyroid. It has been since Jan. that I was finally able to get onto my thyroid medicine, Armour (it is a natural pig thyroid and has the least amount of side effects). I am a person who does not like taking a bunch of prescriptions, I am highly sensitive to the side effects and frankly I don't see how adding more poison to the body is really helpful, yes you may mask symptoms for a time but the damage to your liver and not finding a cure are problematic for me. I am one of those patients the doctors don't like because I challenge their training and look for more holistic and natural remedies, i.e. I would not take a synthetic drug for my thyroid.

Here are some books I found very useful:
"The Thyroid Solution" & "Thyroid Diet" by Mary J. Shomon
"The Blood Sugar Solution" by Dr. Mark Hyman
"The Calcium Lie" by Dr. Robert Thompson
"Overcoming Thyroid Disorders" by Dr. Brownsteins (currently the leading Dr. on treating thyroid in the US)

Also Here are some websites I have found:
David Brownstein on Natural Hormones

The Gerson Therapy : Gerson Institute

*Pretty much what it comes down to it, to really treat your thyroid or any chronic illness, it goes back to diet, supplements, & exercise. Processed foods have tons of stuff in them that actually destroy our thyroid, not to mention all the other chemical bombardment we get in our world today. Some of it can be avoided yet many can not, so it is important we eat the right kinds of food and give our bodies the extra supplements it needs. The human body is pretty amazing and once it has the proper fuel it can begin to heal itself. I have noticed huge difference by just the small changes I have made and yes I know it is not easy and I am slowly weening myself and my family off the foods that are harmful (processed white sugar & flour) being the two biggies. I understand medication is necessary for some, but I do know with a little digging most have natural counterparts and also with a diet change w/supplements you may not need as much, if any at all. That is why it also good to find a doctor to work with you to help balance your medicine with your diet and supplements with the goal of getting off the medications. So many are out for "quick" fixes they don't want to take the time that is needed to really get better, not to mention most doctors get paid by the pharma companies to put you on their medications (money plays a big part). In the studies I have looked into the majority of people with hypothyroidism are cured when they change their diet and add the correct supplements, the same goes for diabetes, and other chronic illnesses & diseases.

Good luck to you and I will be keeping you in my prayers!

Take Care and God Bless!
