What is everyone doing for Valentine's Day?

And more importantly... what should a girl get for a guy? I just started dating one of my good friends and I'm not sure what to get him. He's 29, and he's a very masculine guy, so I don't think chocolate or flowers would do the trick. I did pick up a little book called 199 Bible Verses for Men which I know he'll like, but it doesn't exactly scream romance. Any ideas for me?

Also, please feel free to throw in discussions of God-honoring romance, reviews of good Christian dating/marriage books, etc.

In my observations of how the world seems to work, men only get their birds St Valentine's day presents because they feel they have to. It's only really the women that seem to get excited about it.

If you want the advice of someone who's never even courted a lass, then I'm happy to oblige: Don't bother. It's not a significant day. I always thought St Valentine's day was to send anonymous cards or letters to the person you secretly fancied. Since you're already courting, that reason is obsolete.

Well, it's actually my boyfriend who is really excited about it. He really wants to make a fuss over me on Valentine's Day because I've spent the last two Valentine's Days getting beat up by my abusive ex and my current boyfriend wants to make the day really special for me. He wants to go all out romantic so I just wanted to get him something nice too...

But you're probably right, I've always thought it was an overrated holiday too, I'm sure most guys feel that way =P

Totally depends on your situation. My Gf lives in another country but we are doing dinner and wine over skype so we can be together.

In that case, I suggest keeping it simple. Don't think too hard about how to make it 'romantic', just get him something you know he'll like. The thought alone qualifies as romance in my book.

For instance, if I were your fella, I'd be happy to receive a bottle of Plymouth gin and/or a packet of Marlboro Reds. But maybe your boyfriend isn't as refined as I am, in which case I'm sure the book will be fine.
