Well as long he/she is a stranger, you can't know his/her economic status, educational degree, spiritual background.
Just imagine yourself walking on the street back from work, when somebody just stops you and says "Hey I need a friend". That is what I was refering at. I never seen anyone to do so, but I know that there are so many who would need a friend, but there are so few who actually care. Most people care only about themselfs, we are selfish by nature. If you stay a bit and listen and pay attention everyone wants to be listen, but there are few who take the time to listen to others. It is so superficial when we are asked "how are you" and we say "I'm fine" when we actually are not fine, or when we ask others "how are you" when we don't even care how they really are and we are pleased when they answer with just a simple "I'm fine", but we are so pissed off if that person starts to actually tell us how he/she is.
Well in the city which I live in, I can attest to the fact that that barely happens. In fact, let's say if a person goes up to someone they don't know and introduces himself, where I live, that for the most part would be considered a little weird. And yeah, it is so true, that people are selfish and are only in their own little world. And the smart phones, and all the other technology savvy gadgets that keep us hooked to the internet does not help the situation. I mean its like walking into an elevator full of people, grown adults, and it's so silent, because no one wants to initiate a brief conversation.

There was an article I read a while back talking about how Facebook and other social networks were possibly making people more lonely due to the fact that people can get easily addicted to these different social sites. Plus, once you have the internet on a mobile device and right at your finger tips, it is just hard to get disconnected. It just absorbs so much of your time, well that is if you let it. I mean just walk into the mall or any establishment and just see how many people are on their cell phones either texting someone or surfing the net.

And yeah I know what you mean with the generic "how are you doing" and so on. You know the catch phrases. Just casual talk that has no substance.

But like Homwardbound said earlier, discernment plays a big role. But if a stranger approached me because he or she needed a friend, I would take that as an opportunity to witness to them.

And it is like you said people do want others to listen to them. I am convinced that there are people desperate just to find someone that will take the time to listen to them and just show that they care. There are a lot of people that are starving for a close and genuine friendship. And it is just unfortunate that most people just want to be in their own world, and only care about their themselves. But that is the world we live in.

I do need to also mention this though; and that is I have heard that the people up north are very friendly and that it is easier to walk up to a stranger and start a conversation. And if that is the case, then that's good. Because I definitely don't see that happening a lot here in Florida.
