Even the disciples thought that the world would end in their lifetime, that is why the account of Jesus's life/ resurrection/ministry in the gospels were recorded on paper later in the disciples lives to eventually become books of the bible; up the then it was communicated orally. We don't know the day or hour, yet someone always comes up with a date of the end of the world. While we're on the topic of the end of the world, I have something that I would like to mention.
The Rapture (meaning Christians being taken up to Heaven before the end begins) is incorrect and based upon the Left Behind series. It somehow made it into contemporary Christian belief, but its not biblical. The church throughout history never believed in the rapture.
Matthew 24:37
"As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left."
The verse references Noah, who was left behind while everyone else was swept away by the flood. So it will be at the coming of Jesus. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken , one will be left: you WANT to be the one left behind.
I felt like clearing that up. I figured since concept of the rapture seems to be ingrained in christian thought, I would address that outright
