Rainacorn I feel into the same crowd for a while before I got saved, except it wasn't cigarettes. I know what you meant Vikki I was only addressing the "if ever" portion of your statement. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I definitely tried to find fulfillment in my life through drugs, but it only lead to hopelessness and dispair..Athough I doubt that cigarettes are as much as a drug as weed, I do agree that is for those who take pleasure in fleshly passions, at least in the begining. Praise the Lord Holly (I hope that's your name..?) that you stopped smoking! Why do you think your grandmother let you smoke? Did she think it was harmless? Since your who family smoked, do you think that a part of you might have wanted to smoke in order to fit in (peer pressure)? I know for my dads family the two things were alcohol and cards.

Yes my name is Holly :) How'd you guess that??

My nana probably didn't think anything about giving me cigerattes because she gave them to my mom when my mom was 14, and my nana's mom gave them to her around the same age. Like i said it was just kinda what you did. My cousins and aunts they all did that with their children as well. It was almost like some kind of family tradition.

It kinda depends on the type of person you are. Some of us live in the moment not really caring about what tomorrow brings and being largely ok with what may come. A phrase I'm rather fond of bears this out "Praise the God of all, drink the wine, and let the world be the world". Then you have your people that are always planning ahead and looking towards the future. Which in my opinion is a bad way to live because it almost always leads to worrying too much, but some may disagree with me here.

The first type of person is more likely to smoke, me among them. But if they're anything like me they are at peace with their own mortality, and aren't overly concerned with the practice in futility that is trying to prolong ones life by abstaining from things that God has given us for our enjoyment. The way I see it God will keep me on Earth as long as it is his good pleasure to do so and my death is already written in stone and known to God, for we all die when we are appointed to.

Yes, you are sounding like an early Church Father right there brother. You must have read them. A true lover of Wisdom will not want to leave those writings buried in the ground like some hidden treasure. They really are some of the true gems and treasures in the Orthodox Church and ancient Churches. The writings of the Ante-Nicene/Post Nicene Church Fathers, was an era of true shepherds teachers of the Christian Faith. This era of true teachers still lives on today.

Here is a link to their writings if anyone wants to read them:

Every person is different as to why they smoke. Why do some peopel drink? Why are some people addicted to caffiene? Why do some people over eat or barely eat at all.

Whatever reasons a person may have a bad habit it is most likely personal. I started smoking when I was 22. Why did I do it? I honeslty cannot tell you why, but I am struggling to stop the habit.

As for people saying it is done out of stupidity, I sure hope you have never had a bad habit you needed to break...whether it is harmful to your health or not. Walk a mile in someone elses shoes...especially someone who KNOWS their habit is harmful and seriously struggles. Saying it is STUPIDITY is not at all encouraging.

I have to wonder why the question was asked. Was someone hoping to be convinced that they should? Or were smokers asked to present their justifications? That seems a little hostile.

Why do people ask questions like this? :D

I will have to admit that the Church Fathers (as well as the Bible) came to mind when writing that. They're one of those things that become ingrained in your mind as you read them.

Holly I saw it on your page. Sorry for being a stalker but NodMyHeadLikeYeah was a little to long for me to write :). I hope the tradition stopes with you!!

Saying stupidity isn't encouraging I agree, but sometimes the truth is ugly. I wouldn't say the word stupid because it is not productive, but if they smoked knowing what would happen, that is pretty...well stupid.

Are you suggesting I want to smoke, but need the say so from other Christians???? Trust me smoking is something I have been in bondage to and would not want to get back into. Plus I'm convinced that it is sin so nothing another Christian could say would get me to smoke or even want to smoke. I think your being a tad bit too deep in your analyzing, couldn't curiosity just be a reason for asking???

people smoke for the reasons they use to not quit..... such as stress, to not eat as much and have weight gain, habbit/addiction, pass the time, b/c they are social drinkers, b/c they think it's cool, they have been doing it for years, they grew up around it and so they picked up the habbit, b/c they drink, b/c they become calm after a few drags. Smoking is mind over matter. I feel that way at least. I just quit smoking again and even tho I never smoked in my house or around my children. I smoked more when around other smokers, i ate more when I didn't smoke. I smoked b/c I didn't think of the harm I was doing to my lungs and body/health. It was something I had done on and off from when I was 9 years old tell almost 27 years old. Everyone is different. The only thing is it's like other addictions if your wanting the help seek it and pray for the smokers. Pray for yourself. If you don't want it your not going to stop without being forced. My grandpa has lung cancer and smoked It still took me a year to fully stop. thats just a little insite coming from a smoker. i will say now that I dotn smoke I smell much better breath a lot better and I can smell Cig smoke like a trained dog for hunting :( eww I aloowed myself that. Anyways I am thnakful to be around more years in a healthy way for my kids :)

Seems many people smoke because they started young and have trouble quitting. So they continue.
