Balloons are not a joke.
Balloons were crucial during WWI
Japan sent 9,000 balloons with bombs over the US in WWII
Balloons with cameras and sensors were a constant presence in Afghanistan, Iraq and along the US Southern border over the last 20 years.
The balloon flies too high to be shot down with guns. If you have a machine gun mounted on a plane, perhaps a Warthog then you can riddle the balloon with bullets. But that is not a common airplane to be located in a US airfield. They are essentially tank killers. You would not use a missile to blow it up. So there are a couple of possible reasons. The most reasonable one is something called "rattle the cage". You do something to see what the response would be. Many of the defenses can be hidden so you want to provoke a response to see what the hidden defenses are. This concept has been described in several legal thrillers.

China’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday said it "strongly disapproves of and protests" the U.S. decision to shoot down a spy balloon that had been in U.S. airspace for the last several days and warned that it may take unspecified "responses" to that action.
"China strongly disapproves of and protests against the U.S. attack on a civilian unmanned airship by force," the Foreign Ministry said. "The Chinese side has, after verification, repeatedly informed the U.S. side of the civilian nature of the airship and conveyed that its entry into the U.S. due to force majeure was totally unexpected.
"The Chinese side has clearly asked the U.S. side to properly handle the matter in a calm, professional and restrained manner," it added. "The spokesperson of the U.S. Department of Defense also noted that the balloon does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground."
And the Democrats were afraid that Trump was going to get the US in a war. I have never felt less safe under Biden!

The only way to deal with this is homeschool. If 10% of parents pull their kids to be homeschooled they will have a crisis on their hands. If 25% of elementary school kids were pulled out to be homeschooled the public school system would be completely exposed as a failed system. They will try to negotiate, don't. If after 8 years it is blatantly clear to all how horrible the public school system is, then you will be in a position to seriously change the public school system.
