We have one master and that is Christ. I think the OP's point is not that we should never ourselves reference a teacher for the sake of fanning our thoughts, but that we not then build on that teacher as though that teacher is Christ.

That is what those of the house of Chloe at 1 Cor.1 were doing when Paul scolded them that they caused Christ to be divided.

The OP is well spoken.

So here's my 'two cents...'

Sometimes you just need a medical specialist, because not many of us are surgeons and it's hard to perform an operation on yourself.
Same goes for interpreting the Bible, sometimes you just need a theologian to help you understand it. Most of us, for instance, can't understand the original hebrew, arameic and greek, and are dependant on translations to read the Bible, translations that were made my theologians. Technically speaking you don't read the Bible itself, but what the theologians made of it, because all translation is interpretation. In principle you cannot base your exegesis on a translation, especially when you're a preacher.

Theologians are not only specialist in the field of biblical theology but also in the fields of historical, philosophical, systematic and practical theology. They're there to teach and inform others; to train people to become pastors, ministers and priests. Those become specialists aswell, because it's a huge responsibility to preach the Word and guide the 'flock.' We shouldn't depend on 'amateurs' to do that job.

Apart from that we also have to bear in mind that theology is still an academic study, that can be done for theology's sake. When my study of the Bible is purely an academic exercise, to deepen my understanding of the text itself, I do not pray the Holy Spirit for guidance first. When I want to study the Bible as an expression of my faith (so as a part of my relationship with God), I do pray the Holy Spirit to guide me first, because only through Him I can understand the text AS the Word of God.

I think someone who preaches the Word should do both: AND have a firm knowledge of everything that's related to our faith in Christ Jesus (aka 'theology') AND pray God's Spirit to guide him when he's interpreting the Bible and preaching it AS God's Word.

I know it is difficult at first for us to do, but we must learn to turn our mind's eyes away from what we see as offending by intentionally turning them toward seeing Yahweh's beauty and love which is always there around us somewhere to be seen.

No man is dependent upon us for their salvation. We all have the same master to whom we all answer. Let us therefore not judge each other.

And, yes, I am speaking to myself, also.

I have much yet to learn.

Inspiration means 'in the breath' so we are to believe it is in the Spirit of God - that is the outgoing nature of God.
Something those IN the Bible didn't have was - the Bible. They had only the OT and and the word of others.
When Christ said we would get help from the 'comforter' what we got was the Bible.

Learn the Bible from the Bible.
Later ask people for help on tricky bits.

If you ask for help before you get what they Bible says REALLY CLEARLY then you're going to get 2000 years (or less) of man's ideas.
God gave inspiration for a reason - so we could easily read his word.
The church tried to hide that from people and killed people who read it and said their way was wrong - for many years.
Nowadays they just say "you're a heretic" or ban you or some silliness.
God's word remains - despite these folks...

I see people saying we waste our time arguing - and they are people who spend ALL their time arguing and that is why they come here. They NEVER post on a thread they agree with!!!

And I am guilty of this :(
 
can't base your study of the bible solely on yourself, you need others who have been enlightened to help with the studies. Then you take what those "teachers" give ya, and do your own bible study to see if they line up with the bible and your own studies. you don't go off thinking that everything you think your hearing is from GOD, satan has a voice too. you test it out with the written word.

We don't need to take anything from 'teachers' We are more than capable of thinking that we hear from GOD. Through our constant studies of the word and prayer, we are able to discern the difference between YAH's voice and satans voice. As Yeshua said, My sheep hear My voice."

Once again, our revelation, understanding, wisdom comes to us through the Holy Spirit, it NEVER comes through man. The problem is the church has relied on man too much in revealing the truth of YAH's word, and this is why the body is so divided and has over 30,000 denominations.

So I'll stick with knowing full well that I receive YAH's truth from YAH's word via the Ruach Hakodesh (Holy Spirit) Those who choose to continue to listen to man, can sift through all the junk of the 1000's of denominations that are involved in that. good luck.
