The Tower of Babel
(Genesis 11:1-9)
1 Now the whole world, had one language and a common speech. 2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, "Come let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that men were building. 6 The Lord said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."
8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel -- because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
What is the total number of languages in the world?
Wow, i guess we cannot give an exact amount or answer... In the Philippines, there are between 120 and 175 languages, depending on the method of classification ( according to pareng Google and mareng Yahoo
) plus the fact that there's an emergence of "new languages"
like the jejemon (hehejeje) and the salitang beki/ gay lingo...hay lalo tuloy nahihirapan magkaintindihan! Anyway, let's just forget about the salitang beki and all their chuvaness!
I also noticed that some of the Filipino members here in CC are from Visayas and Mindanao...
I attended a seminar-workshop before ( I think two years ago..) the speaker shared something about our dialects/languages, and he mentioned the word LANGGAM, and I learned that "langgam" may not actually refer to an "ANT" if you are a Cebuano... lol...
wow, pretty interesting ha! Langgam (Tagalog) = ANT
Langgam ( Cebuano) = BIRD
so if somebody will shout "may langgam!" we will definitely know if a person is from Luzon,Visayas, or Mindanao... lol..
Me..I'm not gonna search for something with feathers and wings...but instead I'll look for a small crawling insect, hoping that it's not a red ant or a fire ant
are there other words like this? ( kakatuwa kasi...)
share your knowledge hehehehe... para may matutunan kami... ( at least we'll learn something is new)
