It's a simple command.
Be baptized.
If someone can't submit to that very simple command, I'd really encourage them to inspect whether the Holy Spirit is working in their life in the first place. I mean if they can't do somethin simple like find some water, how in the world are they going to submit to weightier things like crucifying the flesh and overcoming sin?

Is a question meant to smooth talk away what the Bible clearly says.
Of course we're saved by grace.
BUT.
That reality gets blended with this question "is water baptism essential for salvation?" - all as a way to smooth talk the importance of baptism away.
Because the obvious reaction to ...We are only saved by grace...Is to say...Well if it's only by grace...Then baptism doesn't matter.
See how smooth talky that whole line of reasoning/questioning/thinking is?
But in the end, the Bible says what it says.
You can't smooth talk it away with leading questions mixed with verses about salvation only by grace.
If one can't submit and find some water, then chances are they may not submit on even weightier issues. If they ain't submitting, then maybe just maybe they should see if God is really working in their life.
I'll clarify, if they're trying to smooth talk the commands of God away with leading questions, is that really the fruit of the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit leads us to submit to what Jesus commands. The Holy Spirit doesn't create a laundry list of evasive leading questions that make Jesus's commands null and void.
And obviously if someone is stuck on a cross or sick bed, then there is grace. I know someone is going to see what I said above and mention those extreme situations. Which in fact would be more smooth talk unless they didn't mean it to apply to those not stuck on crosses and sick beds.

So what we have from some, are people actually leading people away from doing something Jesus commanded!
They do it through leading questions, or through applying extenuating situations to those outside of the extenuating circumstance.

This happened to me I went and confessed and I fell into this water Babtism to be accepted by them and was instructed to keep from sin and I became aware of sin somuch that I beacme worse, just as the hypocrites of the day of Christ that Christ exposed

now I do not regret this experience at all for without it I would have never understood the diffeerance of Holy Ghost Babtism over water. I thank God for all things for this is where I learn, now if I did not then I would be a total wreck in regret, and am in a wreck today through my latest surgery that took place last Nov. 2012, and am holding on anyway, beacause I know it is well with my Soul, and yet the flesh is wreaking havoc regardless.

Baptism should be done. I just don't believe it's required for salvation. I've been baptised and I'd encourage all Christians to be baptised. I'm not against baptism.

I can't find in scripture where I need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. If it is written, I am obeying and why should I or anyone that loves the Lord fight or resist.
"You must be" is a commandment. When a secular judge makes a ruling and says "You must pay a fine" does any smart person say, will you take a "verbal check your honor? My word is all you need". LOL"Must” pay is a commandment to action—write that check or money order; cash will work—just pay the clerk and if you do not guess what buddy, call the Bailiff...jail time.

Is baptism what John the baptist did to Jesus to set an example for us, for you? so to answer your question, I think it's Christ like, and it's essential to follow after Christ.
