Of course they are. Have you not read the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus?
Which is a parable...
Luk 16:14
And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.
Luk 16:15
And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts:
To whom? The Pharisees.
Mat 13:34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:
Christ only spoke plainly to his disciples, in public He spoke in parables.
Mat 13:10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
Mat 13:11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
But let's suppose that Luke 16 is actual teaching on the state of the afterlife. Let's notice a few things...
Luk 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and
seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
The can see each other.
Luk 16:24 And he cried and
said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
Luk 16:25 But Abraham
said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
They can hear each other.
Luk 16:26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
They CANNOT go to each other or affect each other.
So, now for the interesting dilemma this poses. If this is not a parable, if this is how it really is, then saved mothers in heaven can see their lost children burning in hell. These mothers can hear their shrieks and screams but they cannot do anything about it. And this goes on for all eternity.
Is this your picture of heaven?
