What's a Monte Crisco?
*gasp* You haven't had a Monte Cristo! Oh, you poor soul!

I've never attempted to make one at home, and the best one used to come from Bennigan's, but that chain no longer exists, sadly. (Maybe because the Monte Cristo and their French onion soup were the only two consistently awesome things on their menu.) The one made by Cheddar's is pretty darn close, though, and I'm not sure how widespread that chain is. Village Inn makes what I call the Monte Cristo sham, which is a sandwich that attempts (and fails) at being a true Monte Cristo by just being a sandwich made with French toast. Nay, nay, I say. A true Monte Cristo should be assemble, battered, and deep fried to the point that someone assumes you're biting into the biggest breast of southern fried chicken ever...until they see the sandwich inside.

Hey Red - huge point of contention for a lot of Monte Cristo lovers: preserves or no preserves? (I vote for preserves. Which, I know, is crazy, because you wouldn't put preserves on a normal ham-and-turkey-and-cheeses sandwich, but suddenly if you batter it and deep fry it, you do...but nothing else in the world makes sense, so why should this sandwich?)

In other news...BIG THINGS HAPPENING TODAY. Actually, not really true, in perspective of the world, but uh...a modest change coming today! I'm a little nervous.

No need for prayer. God will probably laugh about it. ^_^

I've never had a Monte Cristo either. A deep fried ham and cheese sandwich with...jelly. Sounds interesting. I'd still try it. :) I like hot sandwiches.

I've never had a Monte Cristo either. I don't care for chicken on bread. I don't know why, I just don't.

HOLD. THE. PHONE.

Bennigan's doesn't exist anymore?!?! SAD FACE!!!

When I lived in NC, I went to Bennigan's allllll the time, FOR the Monte Cristo (yes, preserves).

But I haven't lived anywhere near any place that has (had :( ) a Bennigan's in 10 years, so I didn't know they went POOF, off the face of the planet. This is a sad, sad day for me...

We had one here near a movie theater. I think it's Red Robin now or Red Lobster. I could be wrong on both of those.

YES!!!! Monte Cristo is a deep fried ham/turkey/cheese sandwich frosted with powdered sugar. :)

YES Shouryu! The preserves MAKE the sandwich, especially the raspberry at Cheddars :)

If anyone has not had one, Cheddars is pretty good if you can't make your own, but you won't have any room left in your stomach for food for several days. It's HUGE! :) The best one I ever had was at a resort in Arizona. Second best was a little mom/pop diner in upstate NY.

You're gonna love it:) Heart attack on a plate, but well worth it :D

Cheddar's is probably my favorite chain (maybe it's a toss up between Cheddar's and BJ's) just because their menu is pretty unique. Everyone has burgers, chicken sandwiches, buffalo chicken strips, steaks, ribs, some kind of chips and spinach-artichoke dip...but Cheddar's also has the Monte Cristo, Chicken Pot Pie, and one of the most scrumptious Shepherd's Pie ever. You pretty much can't get those three things almost anywhere else, as far major chains go. ^_^

YES PRESERVES! I'm glad we're in the majority here. Om nommage.

Okay, I'mma post again in a little bit. Everyone get a glass of water so you can spit it out dramatically.

I totally missed the preserves being in there. it's my attention to detail. I started reading the recipe and stopped. I need to try this with preserves but a deep fried ham an cheese sounds cool to.

We have a Cheddars here but the service is so bad that we don't want to go anymore. We've given it four chances, so now we are done. It's to bad when they finally got our food right, I mean what we actually ordered it was good and the prices where good too.

That looks great Shouryu! How long did it take you to grow it that long? What made you decide to cut it?

Just weighed my laundry that I did: 36 pounds. I guess I should do my laundry more often than once every 2 weeks...
