Nowhere in the Bible will you find any texts regarding Purgatory. The Roman Catholic Church teaches this because they believe that the soul or spirit leaves the body when it dies and then floats around until Jesus comes again. It is all a myth and a false teaching. All those who seek the Truth, pray to God, and not the pope, and search your Bible for the answer.
Frank, you just agreed that Catholics are seeking the Truth while trying to prove that we are not lol. We don't pray to the pope. Your comment is just another misled opinion about us Catholics. You really should do your own research on what your preachers tell you before repeating it in public. God bless.

And for the record, purgatory IS real. I'll get into it more when I get home tonight. I'm just at work. But it seems so many of us have different views on this. Some Protestants, including my girlfriend, know there is a cleansing place. They just don't call it Purgatory. It's just a different name, but that place is real folks. Peace.

To begin with y'all need to know what Purgatory actually is, as opposed to what you assume it is.

The Scripture quoted in the quote is 2 Maccabees 42-46.

Purgatory is not a get out of Hell free card, as once you are in Hell you are there forever. What Purgatory is is a place of cleansing for the elect to purge them of any lingering attachment to sin before they are admitted to Paradise.

I was a Catholic. Went to 8 yrs Catholic grammar school (have the long earlobes from the nuns pulling them to prove it), most of my whole extended large family is still catholic. I am now a Christian. Praise Jesus!! The doctrine of purgatory is responsible for the sick practice of indulgences. This is where relatives and friends give the catholic church money to BUY less time for their loved ones in purgatory. Catholics will try and tell you that this evil practice no longer exists but this is a lie that they themselves may not even be aware of. The more mass cards and more expensive mass cards you BUY results in more masses and prayers being said in your loved ones name thereby lessening their time in purgatory. This entire doctrine is spitting in Jesus' face, as he prayed to the point of sweating blood that His Father would take this cup from Him. If I could just go my bank and give the catholic church $100,000, so that my father could get out of purgatory a week?, a month? a year? a decade? a century? earlier than he would have if I gave nothing then why did Jesus have to suffer and die for us!!!? I pray in Jesus name that catholics are here on CC by no accident, and that the Holy Spirit will convict them and they will accept, and rely on Jesus ALONE!

''An indulgence is the full or partial remission of temporal punishment for sins after the sinner confesses and receives absolution. Under Catholic teaching, every sin must be purified either here on earth or after death in a state called purgatory.

The first known use of plenary indulgences was in 1095 when Pope Urban II remitted all penance of persons who participated in the crusades and who confessed their sins. Later, the indulgences were also offered to those who couldn't go on the Crusades but offered cash contributions to the effort instead. In the early 1200s, the Church began claiming that it had a "treasury" of indulgences (consisting of the merits of Christ and the saints) that it could dispense in ways that promoted the Church and its mission. In a decretal issued in 1343, Pope Clement VI declared, "The merits of Christ are a treasure of indulgences." ''

Question, what about all the saints up to about 1000AD who had no reduction of time from purgatory since there was not yet the practice of offering indulgences?

It is a heinous doctrine that denies the sufficiency of the blood of Christ. It is salvation by works and denies Gods grace. Christ did not need to die if men can be expiated through suffering in purgatory. That is why it is flatly rejected.

Look it's pretty simple. We both know that (“[N]othing unclean shall enter [heaven].” — Rev 21:27) and that we are all still sinning and attached to sin (If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” — 1 John 1:8).

Now I guess you could say a la Luther's "snow covered dunghill", that God looks at us and simply sees Christ, but a dusting of snow doesn't change the fact that whats underneath is repugnant. Which would mean that something unclean does enter heaven.

The Bible, also speaks about a place that is neither heaven nor hell, and that those who reside in it eventually leave:

“Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison; truly I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny” (Mt 5:25-26).

Paul also mentions such a place in his letter to the Corinthians:

11 For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble— 13 each man’s work will become manifest; for the Daywill disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14 If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

Now we know that this verse cannot be speaking of the punishment of the damned and the reward of righteous since in verse 15 it states that "If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire". Additionally, everyone mentioned in the passage built on the foundation of Christ, so none of them are damned.

This place can't be Heaven, as that would mean the unclean have entered, and it cannot be in Hell, since all there are damned. This place of purification, where our wicked deeds are cleansed by fire and our righteous deeds are refined, is what we call "Purgatory", and what you call "nonexistent".

You pay a priest to say Masses for the dead because they are busy people, in order to say a Mass for your relative outside of the ones said during the week means he has to get someone else to sub in for him in other parish obligations. Properly speaking you don't even pay the priest, you donate to the parish so they can use the funds to fix things, buy sacramental wine, and buy sacramental hosts.

You cannot pay for an indulgence, there are indulgences attached to almsgiving, but that is not paying for one.

Wow! The prosecution rests in it's case against purgatory.

Rev 21:27 is speaking of the new Jerusalem which you have confused with heaven. Not to be distracted when we trust Christ for our salvation we are made the righteousness of God. God imputes to us Christ's righteousness.

Now I guess you could say a la Luther's "snow covered dunghill", that God looks at us and simply sees Christ, but a dusting of snow doesn't change the fact that whats underneath is repugnant. Which would mean that something unclean does enter heaven.

Scripture calls us new creatures in Christ. Old things are passed away and we are made new. You have a rather repugnant attitude toward Gods things.
The Bible, also speaks about a place that is neither heaven nor hell, and that those who reside in it eventually leave:
That conflicts with the bible teaching that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. You do not know the truth.

Paul also mentions such a place in his letter to the Corinthians:

You demonstrate that you do not receive the guidance of the Holy Spirit in your reading of the bible. Perhaps you really do not trust the bible but are more comfortable with church tradition.

You are the one who has errantly made that assumption. Believers judgment is not the Great White Throne Judgment.

Peter could not be more clear when he wrote that we are not redeemed with corruptible things like silver and gold but by the precious blood of the Lamb. 1 Peter 1:17-19
Hebrews gives evidence of the sufficiency of Christ's blood. Hebrews 9:11-12,14, & 10:14,28-31.

At first I was sceptical at your claim, but how can I argue with all Capitals in the title? People who are mistaken never use all capitals. This sounds legit.

Well, I believe what is written.

Well there is no way, Jesus would have picked you as a disciple, with all your fancy book learning and what not.

Do you also dismiss the holy spirit when he tries to teach you? Or does the Holy spirit send you emails?

If people want to know about this properly, I would suggest reading further from the mainstream media. You can even go to Catholic Answers and ask someone.

I don't think it's as simple as Twitter following equals time of purgatory. I think twitter was mentioned briefly as a activity to follow one of their events.

The media ran with that small throw away line, and now it's a big deal.

Why do all you angry protestants keep trying to convince yourselves us Catholics are wrong? If youre right than were wrong why do you keep trying to prove to yourself were wrong isnt it a waste of time? If I were you id be using that time to help people, think about how to improve myself like being a better person and what not. Just seems like a waste of time.

I'm not angry except at the devil for his complete deception of the folks in the catholic church so called. I'm concerned about souls that are not going to purgatory but to an eternal condemnation in the lake of fire. Good people and well meaning people who have been lied to by the church leadership. What kind of crazy system tell folks even the popes must go to purgatory? The man they call the vicar of Christ in purgatory?
Catholic teaching does not teach salvation by grace through faith but grace metered out very sparingly by a controlling system of rites and superstitions.
I'm angry and broken hearted by all the souls that are lost and think they can make it to heaven if only they trust the church. Repent and be saved lest you perish in your sins. I'm angry because the "church" teaches traditions over the word of God.

brother, just so you know, you're wrong about this too. The Church teaches the Word first and foremost WITH tradition. Not tradition over the Word. It's Scripture AND Tradition, not Scripture OR Tradition. It's just another thing you have been mis-taught about the Holy Catholic Church. The Word of God first, then from It everything else falls into place. Including Purgatory. Or better known by you guys as the cleansing place. God bless.

Just curious, do you people honestly think that fullness of God can be contained in one Book? That's all I keep hearing from you.

I do not deny you your opinion on this matter but here in the USA there is nothing real consistent about the "church's" teaching. When asked if they are saved most will profess to be catholic before anything else. Salvation is not works based. This is the one thread that I see in the catholic church. The church teaches grace is received by the sacraments which must be repeated many times over. The mass is a rite in which Christ is crucified afresh every time it is done. Check that with Hebrews 6:6. Transubstanciation is another teaching of the church that is patently false. The pope as the vicar of Christ is another that is accepted by some and rejected by others. The inerrancy of the word of God is another doctrinal issue with the church in that only they can interpret it. You cannot accept tradition when it has historically been so opposed to the scriptures. God did not inspire the traditions but the scriptures. The pope cannot speak for God ex cathedra. There is no new revelation due the church.
Anyone depending on the catholic church to save them is eternally lost. Make no mistake about it. There are no catholics who are secure in their knowledge of heaven. The closer they get to eternity the spookier they get about it. No peace in their hearts. I could go on but it's already more than we can address here.
Luke 16 teaches that purgatory is permanent. Those who are there cannot pass between. Luke 16:26 and those words are from the lips of Jesus whose credibility cannot be impeached.
