Why did John asked this:Matthew 11:2-3 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
When he had previously stated this:John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
 
Jesus has made it possible, since His sending the Holy Spirit, for us to have fellowship directly with Him and the Father. This was not the case before. John is in prison facing probable execution. He wants to make sure he completed the ministry God gave him, and that he was not mistaken when he spoke the first statement in prophetic ecstasy. We all do this, when we wait for the fruit before we judge whether a call was really from God.

That's actually a good question, it means you've been studying a lot. I have pondered that myself. John had met Jesus before he was cast into prison.....but John didn't send his disciples to inquire whether Jesus was the messiah or not......John already knew this. A closer reading of the verses in Matthew clear it up.

Matthew 11:2-3

" 2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples.

3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?"

John heard of the works Christ was performing and sent two of his disciples to him....John was not asking whether Jesus was the Messiah or not because he already knew that. The disciples obviously had not met him before, so they asked "Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?". They were told by John to find Christ, and when they found him, they asked that to make sure it was him. Jesus gave them a message to take back to John in the verses after that.
 
You have to think about the time and people that Knew Yeshua. The people did not have the new testament and believed what they had learned. At that time the people of Israel believed in 2 messiahs the son of Joseph and the son of David. John called Yeshua the lamb of God he knew him to be the Messiah son of Joseph. He wanted to know the same thing the disciples asked.
Acts 1:6 When they therefore were come together , they asked of him, saying , Lord , wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel

Yeshua answered him and said the things he was doing proved he was the Messiah. In this Answer he was saying I am the Messiah there is not another and this is proven in the word of God. He is both the son of David and the son of Joseph. The suffering servant ( Son of Joseph) and the conquering king ( son of David.) Blessed is he who is not offended at him because he does not do as we think he should or expect.

1 proof he is Messiah

2 proof there is only one Messiah

3 look what was left out of the message to John. John being filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb would have seen what was left out and got the message.

do not fear what you are about to suffer your God will take vengeance and you will be raised up.

not quite...the two disciples of john are instructed to, and they do go back to John with the message Jesus gave - the proof the messiah had come.

That was the conclusion I arrived at when I first ran into the issue, I could be wrong and Ken could be hitting the nail on the head of course. I'd never really thought about it any other way until Ken posted his view on it earlier.

Kenisyes hit the nail on the head! Many of the Jews were expecting for the Messiah to come riding on a white horse and immediately ushering in a heavenly kingdom on earth; they were not expecting for the Messiah to be crucified. At the time John the Baptist had doubts about Jesus' title, John was facing execution, and he wanted to be sure that Jesus was the Christ. In other words, John the Baptist had a moment of doubt about Jesus' being the Messiah, and this was partly due to John expecting to see Jesus ushering in peace on earth swiftly, not unlike many of the Jews believed at that time.
 
P.S. Although John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus' ministry, John was still just a man, nonetheless. The majority -- if not all the men in the Bible -- had their moments of doubt. Similarly, there have been times when I have even doubted, not necessarily my faith in God, but whether or not I was truly hearing God's Word.
 
It occurred to me talking to Donkeyfish by pm last night, the the Spirit filled John prophetically made the request that his disciples check it out, specifically so we would have Jesus's statement that within John's lifetime, His ministry (and thus John's) had come to the stage of bearing visible fruit.

You are skipping a few things here... The desciples were instructed in Matt 11:6 to tell John that Jesus also said, "And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me".

I do believe that comment was ment for John along with the statements in verses 4 and 5 which were mentioned in threads in this post. I think John had alittle bit of self pride going. He was alittle ticked off at the Lord because he was sitting in prison. He hears all the nice things happening to everyone else but I think he felt forsaken wouldn't you?

He also had some fear after all he pretty much knew what was going to happen to him from the get go when he mentioned in John 3:30, "He (the Lord) must increase, but I (John) must decrease. He was selfishly humanishly bitter. So verse 6 was an admonishment from Jesus.

John wasn't ignorant of his task on earth. The Father instructed him of many things which he didn't just baptize about, he gave sermons about. And then the way Jesus bragged John up you can see Jesus new and felt the HURTING that John felt when he said, "but what went ye out for to see, a reed shaken in the wind" etc. He gave the people a lecture on John as a witness to God that John wasn't forsaken and left in prison to rot.

I'm just sharring what I understand out of it like the rest of yous do and I'm not sayin I'm right just saying what I feel inside

My bad lol. Didn't realize it was a question at first.

I don't know. Maybe he was stressed and at the point of questioning. Makes sense. He was about to die, and so it doesn't seem unreasonable that he say that in that state.

So this coincides with Johns statement "He must but I must decrease" in terms of ministry............Thank you
 
Mystic if I may...
JOhn was the biggest man that would EVER be born of a woman... why? Because John was Elijah, and filled with the Holy Spirit from His mothers womb.... And IN his mother's womb he got excited by the baby in Maria... Jesus and John was connected even before they were born... Elijah and Jesus met up again on the mount with Moses, when Jesus transformed and spoke to Moses and Elijah AFTER John died... It was not John the baptist that came back, it was Elijah again...

So here goes .... John the Baptist knew Jesus even before he was born so John had NO doubt he was Jesus. And John new Jesus when he baptized Him... So now John is in jail and he knew he was going to die soon. Any person filled with the Holy Spirit knows more than normal people,.... john had very loyal disciples and they would need a new leader when he is gone... so John send them to Jesus to also KNOW JESUS is the messiah... then they can go and become disciples of Jesus.

John asked for their sakes not his own.... John KNEW Jesus and Jesus declared him the biggest of all men, but the smallest in the Kingdom... What an AWESOME God we serve... And His men were also so special.... John was a very holy man.... Filled with the Holy Spirit from birth... WOW!!!
