You have to go into history rather than only scripture to find out what was going on at the time scripture was talking about works of the law. All our suppositions are just that, man made conclusions.
This is what was happening: Most of the Christians who were leaders of the church were Jews in Jerusalem. See all of the book of Acts. In their wildest dreams, they never once thought of Christ asking them to change their way of living, of eating, of circumcision, of worship. They also thought that the gentiles should follow them. They made up a list of what they wanted the gentiless to do, including circumcision. The gentiles thought of those things as something those weird Jews did.
Scripture sometimes calls this list "works of law" and sometimes simply "circumcision". Gentiles have been making a federal case of it ever since, mostly using what is said about the gospel not being this list as reasons not to use any discipline in the worship of the Savior.
Reading through these posts will give you an idea of what man has done to make opposing this list mean to the development of our church, even today.
All of the explanations given about worship being more than this list was expanded on and expanded on by early gentile church fathers from Justin to Origen until Constantine came along and made anything Jewish illegal along with making Christ legal. He even changed our holidays by Christianizing his pagan ones. Our church has followed Constantine's interpretation ever since.
Don't take my word! Read history for yourself. I warn you, check the credentials of the historians you read. I watched what colleges verified the accuracy of the historians, preferring Harvard and Yale as trustworthy.

Not that circumcision is a bad thing, for it is healthy to be physically circumcised, just not for Spiritual salvation as what Christ did come to do, was to give us new life in the Spirit of God through his death, burial, and resurrection.
Circumcision of the Heart. A heart transplant to us from God a gift by the resurrected Christ after the death that was needed first to bring in the original Covenant (new covenant) yet not new. that was in place at Abraham, God promised Abraham.
So our high priest today, being Christ is in the order of Melchizadek, bringing home the truth of the promise from God to Abraham 430 years before Law was ever put in place and misunderstood immensely today
