It was my understanding that the current solar max was expected to be greater than normal but ended up being a fizzle. Every 11-14 years (as I recall) the Sun goes thru a solar maximum, which includes CME's. These can induce a current thru inductance on space based and terrestrial based conductors. The CME's have the potential to knock out satellites (commercial and military) which could possibly impact terrestrial communications and power grids.

This is nothing we as Christians need to fear! God remains firmly in control and is able to deflect or minimize any CME's and over current conditions on any conductor. Even if we were to watch the heavens evaporate we will still be fine because God loves us more than we can fathom.

Do you have anything to back up this statement? From what I have just read about this CME it affected a few satellites and a Canadian power plant. You said it burned off the insulation of all the telegraph and telephone wires ''on Earth''. Do you have any idea the amount of wire laid? I mean the sheer size of a project to replace all that wire? I don't see anything anywhere to back up this statement. Do you know what sort of damage would be caused by wires without insulation? I mean..you are talking fires all over the planet. I was alive then and I don't remember this at all to be honest, given I was only 11, but I think I would remember having to replace all our phone wiring in the house.

I can completely agree that a situation like this can be disastrous. Let's hope it doesn't happen or if it does, all we get is a colorful display for a day or two.

What I said about Snowden was merely ancillary response to your ancillary connection to the Coronal Mass Ejection claim.

I have nothing at my disposal to confirm or deny an imminent doomsday scenario, but it seems unlikely that the federal government is focusing many resources on it when it places so much emphasis on booting up Obamacare and enhancing revenue collection. There is a logical disconnect at work that I have trouble seeing past.

You need to think a little more. True electricity is a new fangled thing in relation to history, however if we lost all electricity along with communications, thats before we take into account computers being fried, then it will be like the stone age. Why?

Well for all through history, especially Americas history, society has developed and grown, all through the development there were sophisticated and complex systems in place in order for nations to function, develop and grow in all aspects of all institutions, Government, Education, Religion etc. All of which has now been replaed by modern technology, its called progress.

Before steam we had horse and cart and sail. Even in antiquity Transportation and trade was global, governments undertook administration to provide its population centres with food and water, especailly in Roman times.

Move on to the height of industrial revolution, just about everything was run on steam, but of course all that was replaced by electricity.

So if our electricity and lines of communication a destroyed overnight, what do we have in order to continue with the logistics of making a nation work?

A few days supplies will run out, all factories will grind to a halt, food distribution will fail after a few days. Water will stop being pumped through our taps.

We already seen effects of panic buying and even riots breaking out in cities over the years, just from small local disasters imagine this on a nationwide scale.

When food and water runs out people are going to be only thinking of themsleves and family, desperate times desperate measures, it will be like stone age, defend your home at all costs, spend the day hunting food and water, even willing to kill others for food and killing other people who try to take yours.

In short, civilization will break down and anarchy will rule, this is not how life was like 200 years ago, so yes it will be like the stone age again.

Interesting projection. I agree more with you than with Nautilus, but largely due to human capital. We would have accumulated knowledge, but lack the will to use it.

Governance would be an interesting factor to consider in a doomsday scenario. Nations would still exist to some degree, but my money would be on balkanization. Localities and their staples would rise up and take power that was once held by central governments in an attempt to organize and institute some degree of civil order.

In short, I don't picture an era that looks completely Stone Age, but an admixture of Stone Age, the Postmodern Age, and the Age of the Nation-State.

Those who identify as conservatives would have some reason to rejoice. The Leftist idea of the march of history and inevitable progress to a terrestrial paradise would be knocked back many pegs.

Of course I wouldn't want this to happen despite my political label. I am, among other things, a human being with people he wants to keep in contact with that lie beyond the border of my state. Death of millions is never a good thing either unless you are some sort of malthusian wackjob.
