What I always find rather depressing is when people continually state we must obey commandments to get to Heaven, the inference appearing to be we must focus on commands of the bible and strive to obey them, and if we succeed we will get to Heaven.
I loved my mother greatly. When she was diagnosed as terminally ill my wife and I went and looked after in her home for three months. I felt at that time I had never lived closer to biblical teaching as I did then. I put aside my own wants so my mother could have the best life possible in the time she had left to live, my focus was on her needs, not my own.
I didn't have to think of any commandment during this time and strive to obey them where she was concerned, I never once thought of any of the Ten Commandments and strove to obey them, I was naturally following them because I loved my mother.
I remember I felt much guilt as well as the time for I was over fifty and reflected on how far short I had so often fallen in my own life compared to how I was living at this time(I do still fall terribly short, and often)
The point being, the way to follow the commands of scripture is indeed to love God and love your neighbour. If we are having to focus strenuously on striving to obey individual commands are we loving as we should?
And if we are not loving, we can't truly obey them can we however much we try
So I'll never see obedience as focusing on literal commands and striving to obey them, but the key must be love God and love your neighbour
I am only too painfully aware of how far I often fall short, especially in the cut and thrust of debate at times on the internet
And of course we have to look to Christ to change us from within, we are helpless in ourselves
So I do find it depressing, and not the correct way if we tell people to focus on the law/commandments and strive to obey them to get to Heaven(you can't get to Heaven if you don't), rather look to Christ and pray we will be more loving, then obedience will come naturally and we won't be Pharisees, even unwittingly at times
