WASHINGTON – AIPAC and J Street backed separate letters in the US Senate Tuesday welcoming US President Barack Obama’s trip to Israel, with the former emphasizing Israel’s security challenges and the latter calling for US support for a two-state solution.

The AIPAC-backed letter by Sens. Ben Cardin (D-Maryland) and Susan Collins (RMaine) begins by labeling Palestinian unilateral efforts at the UN “unacceptable” and urging Obama to clearly reject this strategy as well as de-legitimization of Israel.....


.....Members also addressed the issue of Iran.

“We share your hope of finding a negotiated solution to Iran’s nuclear program, but also your clear statements that all options are and must remain on the table,” they wrote. “And we must continue to protect Israel’s Qualitative Military Edge and support Israel’s inherent right to self-defense.”

WASHINGTON — As Congress began to debate US military involvement in Syria, Israel’s Ambassador to Washington Michael Oren released Israel’s first official position statement on the subject Tuesday night. At a subsequent event, he dismissed those critics who argue that the US should not retaliate for the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons because it would put Israel in danger.

Shortly after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee concluded a lengthy session debating the approval of a retaliatory strike, Oren released an official statement in which he said that “Israel agrees with President Obama that the use of chemical weapons is a ‘heinous act’ for which the Assad regime must be held accountable and for which there must be ‘international consequences.’ Israel further agrees with the President that the use of chemical weapons promotes the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and encourages ‘governments who would choose to build nuclear arms.’”

WASHINGTON — It was a long road for the pro-Israel community before it publicly came out in support of the attack. While expressing outrage over Assad’s use of chemical weapons, the Jewish community was initially reluctant to speak out in favor of an attack, fearing the move would play to the hands of those accusing the community of pushing America to war.

But several factors changed the calculus of Jewish leaders — most significantly the Obama administration’s emphasis on the importance an affirmative vote in Congress would have on Israel’s interests in the region and the White House’s implicit message that pro-Israel activists should take this point to heart.

Demonstrating the sensitivity of dealing with such requests was an article published on September 2 in the New York Times that quoted an unnamed administration source who seemed to be prodding AIPAC to weigh in and lobby for the resolution. The reference to AIPAC was later removed from the article with no explanation.

The New York Times has come under fire for "self-censoring" its own reporting on the Syria crisis after pressure from Israel's powerful lobbying group in Washington, the American-Israeli Public Affairs Committee (Aipac).

The newspaper ran a news story on 2 September outlining President Obama's efforts to secure congressional backing for military intervention in Syria, in which it broached the sensitive issue of Israel's position on the possibility of imminent air strikes.

The report detailed the president's meetings with influential senators and members of Congress, and with committees including the Senate Armed Forces Committee, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, before moving on to Aipac and its agenda.

It quoted one unidentified administration official who described Aipac as "the 800-pound gorilla in the room".

The report went on to quote the same official describing the hardening pro-intervention position of politicians it termed "Aipac's allies in Congress".

The official characterised the view taken by Aipac's allies as "If the White House is not capable of enforcing this red line... we're in trouble."

Later that day, the newspaper updated the article. It said: "Administration officials said the influential pro-Israel lobby group Aipac was already at work pressing for military action against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, fearing that if Syria escapes American retribution for its use of chemical weapons, Iran might be emboldened in the future to attack Israel."

The report appeared on the NYT.com website on 2 September, but had gone through 11 published changes by 4 September.

The final version of the piece contained no reference to Aipac or the action it had been pushing for.

The edited version raised concerns among analysts that the paper, the nation's most eminent news organ, had edited its own report for reasons unrelated to accuracy or importance.

The war the lobby really craves

Political commentators suspected that the views candidly reflected Aipac's position but were removed as the lobby group did not wish to see its true thinking reported in the national media.

MJ Rosenberg, a former foreign policy adviser to Democrats in the Senate and Congress, was among the first to raise concerns over the omission.

"Obviously the White House and/or Aipac did not want to be caught saying that the reason we are attacking Syria is to show Aipac that we are serious about the war the lobby really craves: Iran," wrote Rosenberg.

"But there it is. Or was. Aipac censorship even applies to the Times. Only in America - not Israel, where Aipac's power does not extend to Ha'aretz."

Of course Israel wants Syria government in disarray. They have the oil in Golan Heights in sight. Their attempt to go for the oil in the 90s ended in pesky peace talks with Syria.

Concerning Israel going after oil in the Golan Heights Israeli political analyst Yaron Ezrahi told FT. “The timing is directly related to the fact that the Syrian government is dealing with violence and chaos and is not free to deal with this problem.”

even though christians in the west are waking up to it all and not wanting to do these wars anymore, it's too late.

the 'war on terror' (islam) is certainly accomplishing the purpose of having the 2 groups kill each other.
but muslims have been successfully turned on each other at this point.

my suspicion is that the real end game is to have the US & Russia go at it - in order to finish off the US. the US is bankrupt and already exhausted.

A video has emerged of an opposition rebel militant in Syria apparently confessing to using chemical weapons in order to follow Osama Bin Laden’s mantra of killing women and children.

The individual in the clip, Nadeem Baloosh, is a member of an insurgent group called Riyadh Al Abdeen, which is active in the Latakia area of Syria. Baloosh speaks of “chemicals which produce lethal and deadly gases that I possess,” before going on to state, “We decided to harm them through their women and kids.”

The footage adds to the increasing weight of evidence that suggests US-backed rebels possess and have used chemical weapons on more than one occasion, although such reports have been habitually downplayed by the mainstream media. Russia announced that it had compiled a 100 page report proving opposition rebels “were behind a deadly sarin gas attack in an Aleppo suburb earlier this year.”
