Im sure The bible says the lifespan of man will not exceed 120 years. Now I'm sure that has to be a grave misunderstanding on my part because the bible clearly describes people living much longer.

What have I missed?

The portion of Scripture you are citing (declared by God) was after the flood and then man's lifespan began reducing.

Genesis 6
[SUP]3 [/SUP]And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

As I understand it the 120 years was the time period that God would endure befor he dealt (the flood) with the wickedness.

Psalms 90:10

The days of our years are threescore years and ten;
and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow;
for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

This is all that I could come up offhand.

Are you sure that "days" in Hebrew is to be understood in the sense of "lifespan" as we do in English? If not, the correct interpretation needs to explain how "days" changes to "years".

4 Psalm 39:4&5
4 Lord, make me to know mine end
and the measure of my days, what it is;
that I may know how frail I am.
5 Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth;
and mine age is as nothing before thee:
verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.

I am open to interpretation and learning.

life is not worth living if one is not happy and we can have happiness by obeying his word so I want to live as long as I am happy what ever time that is allowed me to live.

See Gen 25:7 and the same phrase in other places, like 29:20, 35:28, 47:9. and look through Gen. 5 for examples of the words together. Note that the early Christians and Jews had several different totals for Gen. 5. Then check Strongs for other possible meanings.

Jehovah’s long-suffering was seen in Noah’s day. Over a century before the Flood, “God saw the earth and, look! it was ruined, because all flesh had ruined its way on the earth.” (Genesis 6:12) Still, for a limited time, Jehovah showed long-suffering toward mankind. He said: “My spirit shall not act toward man indefinitely in that he is also flesh. Accordingly his days shall amount to a hundred and twenty years.” (Genesis 6:3) Those 120 years allowed faithful Noah time to produce a family and-when informed of God’s decree-to build an ark and warn his contemporaries of the coming Flood.

This probably is true nevertheless you see mankind go from living about 800-900 years down to about 120 after the flood.

Man was given 6 days to work.

1000 years for a day equals 6000 years.

Jubilee cycles once EVERY 50 YEARS.

6000 divided those 50 years equals 120 jubilee years that God's spirit will indeed strive with man.

Psalms 90:10

10 The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;

6000 years in which a jubilee is every 50 years has also within those 50, 7 SABBATH YEARS.

50 years= 7 sabbatical years
100 years= 14 sabbatical years (7x2)
1000 years= 140 sabbatical years (14x10)
6000 years = 840 sabbatical years (140x6)

840 sabbatical years divided by 12 tribes of Israel (only gates to the city) EQUALS 70 SABBATH YEARS PER TRIBE.

By reason strength is 840 sabbatical years plus 120 Jubilee years = 960 total set apart years, also divided by 12 tribes of Israel = 80 sabbatical years.

It says that "My Spirit shall not strive with man" does not say how long he will live.

With human longevity back in the world news again yesterday and today, I thought it was a good time to look at lifespans in the Bible. I put together a 10 minute video that looks at man's lifespan throughout time, when it changed and by how much, according to the Bible. Have a look:
