Tonight, I went out to dinner with my husband (yay!) and a few tables away, there were a group of friends, guys and girls, and all under the age of 20 as far as I could tell. They were talking pretty loud, and I heard one of the girls say, "I don't think I even have the commitment gene. I can't stand the idea of being with only one person for the rest of my life." Another girl laughed at her and asked if the ability to commit in a relationship was genetic, and one of the guys jumped all over that and said yes, absolutely, commitment is a genetic trait.

My husband and I just kinda stared at each other with confused/amused looks on our faces.

But really, since then, I've been wondering...

I've always kind of assumed that the ability to commit to anything, be it a person, or a job, or other responsibilities, was more about maturity and less (okay, just NOT) about genetics. I am, of course, totally open to the possibility that I am entirely wrong and those little punks- ahem, I mean, young adults- have got the right idea.

(That's not true at all- I think those kids were just silly.)

My scientific assessment is that the lil' lady has a few wild oats to sow before she settles down.

There is the sin nature which naturally goes for contract relationships - I stay as long as you do x,y,z for me
Marriage is a covenant relationship - I stay regardless if you do x,y,z

God is a covenant God - Praise, SHOUT PRAISE HALLELUJAH

God is a covenant God.
Indeed! Frankly, only marriage is the holy covenant valid upon the face of the Earth.

I commit 100% to holy marriage regardless of f(x), f(y), f(t), w(x, y, z), or how big your wallet is/was/aint. Holy is the deal. :D

hmmmm f(x) isn't that a factor of x which could be variable? lol

I've always kind of assumed that the ability to commit to anything, be it a person, or a job, or other responsibilities, was more about maturity and less (okay, just NOT) about genetics.
Commitment to anything is relative to the moral/ethical value we harbor upon our hearts/mind; therefore, the value of commitment is not a "gene" related trait, but a learned behavior.

We are capable of commitment to illicit deals (ie. drug deals, murder for hire, fornications, etc) as well as develop commitment to a life of service to an orphanage, to an employer, to raising a family, for examples.

Having said that, I believe only God provides the guidelines for moral value and ethical behavior, and only God enables the mind willing to yield to God's holy virtues, which will resonance upon all commitments we make.

Frankly, the whole reason why eligible godly men and godly women are not married and those who are, stay happily married, is precisely because of our commitment to holiness, not because of our DNA. ...just saying. :D

MissCris - let me take this opportunity to help explain this complex subject using as much laymen language as possible. Let's begin with the structure of DNA. The acidic make-up of....................................SQUIRREL!!!!!

Correct!

Regardless of all the variables of life, including time, f(t), we are to age gracefully as the Lord sanctifies us whether we be single, married, divorced, widowed. Our commitment should always be to seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness with every breath we take.

Its alright MissCris, you grew up to be a good mommy and fine wife to your husband with lots of enlightening insights to share for others benefit which is more than a degree in science is worth. :)
I just thought it may be more enjoyable to just sit back and look at the pretty lights instead of getting into an explanation of amino acid molecule chains, biophysical electrical impulses to activate receptors actuating synapse connections to form thoughts and all that stuff.

Those synapse connections have to have new or different path connections to form new thoughts or different thoughts or alternative thought choices.
IE: if a person such as the girl you spoke of was always taught to have multiple partners, it may have never even entered her mind to consider just having one for life. The thought process was never born to commit to memory as an instinctual basis to call upon.
So...sort of like reprogramming a computer, or more correctly a computer that has a virus and doesnt do what its suppose to do.
certain things need to be deleted and the proper data inputed

Therefore I don't believe it is a genetical issue but as BananaPie said, a learned behavior,,, or more a behavior due to a lack of learning, the girl likely has limited information as most people are not taught how to have a proper and Godly relationship and are forced to either learn on their own to form the best conclusion or learn from bad examples and experiences.

Until finally some hear the truth of the Gospel and Gods word sets them free of all that has bound them in the past.
But they have to actually let go of all that stuff to be freed from it.
It takes time for that process of thought change to happen unless ones wires have been crossed and the proverbial light bulb goes on in their head with "AHA" moments of glory.

Until then, that girl even not being in Gods will, is still being used by God.
She can be an example to others of what not to do and the realization of what verses like this mean.
As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.

No no, MissCriss, they were talking about commitment jeans.

They tend to look like this:

So, in our science lesson today, we have learned that "Commitment jeans" are those jeans that you just can't throw away because you're so committed to seeing just how old/torn/paint splattered/dirty they can really get. I'm sure that's what those kids were talking about. Yep. :D

The real answer is, '42.' ^_~

...but on a serious note, no. Propensities for things may vary by genetics, but are not solely based on them (likewise with 'giftings'...just because you don't have, doesn't mean you can't have it...you'll just have to work A LOT harder for it).

Similarly, people have a tendency to 'legalize' whether through science, religion, or other, their own thoughts and feelings on things. I don't like x,y,z because of x,y,z, so it must not be in my genes (against my beliefs, etc).

*sigh* We really need to stop copping out, and playing the blame game for things.

Sigh. People are dumb.

I used to say that I wasn't able to commit. I wanted to be free, etc. But what it was really fear. It scared me to death to think of committing myself to a man who wasn't going to love or want me long term. However, having dealt with this issue commitment doesn't bother me any more.
