AMERICA has been rocked by another mass shooting incident, this time in Chicago.

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that up to 12 people have been shot at a basketball court, including a three-year-old child.

Four people are in a serious to critical condition, including the three year old, although there have been no reported fatalities as yet.

One report on Twitter stated there were two gunmen.

The incident took place on Chicago's south side, in the Back of the Yards neighbourhood.

The Chicago Sun Times quoted 22-year-old local resident Julian Harris as saying that "dreadlocked gunmen in a gray sedan" fired at him at the corner of Wood and 51st street.

"They've been coming round here looking for people to shoot every night - just gang-banging stuff. It's what they do," the paper quoted Harris saying.

chicago is the most crime-ridden city in america so i cant say im surprised. Hearing it was most likely gang violence well i care even less. Feel a little bad for the three year old though

A large potion of the violence in the US is gang violence. If we cleaned that up the gun crime would go way down. That and if we would stop listing suicides (roughly 60 percent, actually a bit higher) as gun crimes.

It's about time your politicians had the backbone to tighten up GREATLY your VERY LAX gun laws!

Like, what is the point of taking a military carbine into Starbucks with you when you go in for a coffee, absolute madness!

lol, you do realise that sort of thing only happens in a couple of states, all of which have low gun crime ratings. You can't take what you call a 'military carbine' into just any store in most states. In California, the police have been known to open fire on people who were carrying gardening tools and pocket knives. Your blanket statement is extraordinarily ignorant; gun laws are lax some places, and very strict others. The main issue with this event is that it was perpetrated by gang members (who obtain guns illegally).

One of the things I admire about Americans is their protection of their right to bear arms, in the event that their government decides to do away with them, as many other Communist governments have with their unarmed populations over the past 100 or so years (look at Stalin's holocaust of 7 million Ukrainians in the 1930s, for one example of many).

The right of Americans to bear arms has been around for more than 100 years, yet all of a sudden in the past 10 or 20, so-called "lax gun laws" (i.e. rights of citizens to protect themselves) are causing violent gun deaths? Surely you aren't so naive?

Imagine if every citizen was packing some sort of firearm, which they probably would be, if they weren't so brain-washed by anti-gun, communo-feminist schooling and laws that make criminals out of honest folk carrying weapons? Cowards like those gun-men would be done away with quickly, and you wouldn't even need to call the police, let alone pay for a trial.

Such psychological operations (real and imaginary) with conveniently "lone gunmen" (don't want to implicate the groups who are setting these up) will continue in America, unless and until Americans give up their right to bare arms. If ever this happens, I believe the killing will really commence en-masse, with nothing standing any longer to protect the American people from the criminals in society and government.

It is ONLY commonsense that the more firearms you have circulating in a society that more chance you have of gun crime!

NOT naivety BUT common sense! :p

The more citizens who carry guns, actually the more chances of stopping a gun related crime
Perpetrators committing crimes against gun toting citizens are staggeringly low, imagine that

I think you want to go back over the years and count the number of mass murders there has been in the US and I think you'll find that more than just 2 states are involved and on different occasions it has NOT been gang crime BUT ordinary individuals acting alone!

The murder rate in the US is NOTHING to be proud and tightening up your lax guns laws can ONLY reduce it, it is obvious you live in a fantasy world when it comes to gun crime in your country!

I wasn't referring to mass shootings, I was referring to your comment about people carrying 'assault carbines' into Starbucks.

I don't know for sure but I would wager the gun laws in Chicago are probably very strict.

Gun laws only keep guns from law abiding citizens.

Every crime today perpetrated with a gun is being promoted. There is an agenda.

Its the same agenda that supports abortion and buying votes with welfare checks.

As far as I know a gun has never jumped off a shelf to kill someone.

Its not about your right to carry a gun. Its about freedom and what that means. Freedom is the acceptance of more personal responsibility. That means those who are irresponsible, like most if not all liberals, will suffer the consequences of their actions.

That's why gun laws and many others are put into place, like the fiasco of the national health care laws. Its never about carrying a gun or paying for health care. Its about making a bigger more powerful government with power being concentrated in fewer and fewer people.

I know the european mindset has been one of monarchy and big governments for centuries. Americans came from those countries and we left for a reason.

Freedom.

Soldiers died for it.

Jesus sacrificed Himself, the only perfect man, for it. Freedom should always be respected...even if it gets messy.

Mayor: "Assault weapons do not belong in our parks, they do not belong on our streets."

"A military-grade weapon on the streets of Chicago is simply unacceptable," a visibly frustrated Police Superintendent Gary McCarthy said at a news conference. "We should not accept assault-style weapons in our communities."

Chicago required the registration of all firearms but did not allow handguns to be registered, which had the effect of outlawing their possession, unless they were grandfathered in by being registered before April 16, 1982.[SUP][45][/SUP][SUP][46][/SUP] Additionally, several Chicago suburbs had enacted outright prohibitions on handgun possession.

Chicago has banned the possession of certain semi-automatic firearms that it defines as assault weapons, as well as magazines that can hold more than 12 rounds of ammunition.Chicago residents must "immediately" report a firearm that is stolen or lost, and must report the transfer of a firearm at least 48 hours in advance.[SUP][27][/SUP] In a home where a person younger than 18 is present, all guns must be secured with a trigger lock, or stored in a locked container, or secured to the body of the legal owner.[SUP][28][/SUP] Chicago also prohibits the sale of firearms within city limits.[SUP][29][/SUP]

I guess the murderers overlooked those laws. Whenever I hear a liberal talk about gun violence all I hear coming out of their mouth is, "Misinformation misinformation misinformation misinformation misinformation misinformation misinformation misinformation misinformation." These people have asked for all of these firearm restrictions and now they've become the sheeple they always wanted to be. They're ripe for the butchering, and that's exactly what's happening. What can I say? In China you can't even buy a kitchen knife as a foreigner unless they bend some rules and have people sign for it. And no one even wants to do that.

You know what I've been hearing for the past 10 years in America? Security, security, security, security, security. Control, control, control, control, control. Now the criminals have control and the citizens have no security.

I'd like to introduce you - my dear, good-intentioned liberal friends - to a certain website. Browse by State | Guns Save Lives Feel free to consider what would have happened in each of these stories had these victims been unarmed. In my opinion:

1. The news doesn't cover gun self-defense stories, because in said stories very few get hurt or killed. When they do, it's certainly not 12-30 injuries or deaths. More like 1-2.
2. Consider the saying, "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Then consider what sort of power guns give people. Consider where America would be if its military had a monopoly on firearms and weaponry. Consider that the National Guard has already been ordered to shoot civilians dead in the past and that Japanese Americans were forcefully relocated to internment camps during WWII.
3. In order for America to have no guns, for there to be no gun violence and for liberal gun control laws to finally be effective you would need to completely ignore the Second Amendment. In the mean time there will be plenty of criminals taking advantage of the gun control laws to kill innocent civilians.

In the end, I think our aims are the same. But the total absence of guns in the hands of American citizens is only a distant dream - more likely a nightmare. I can tell you what will reduce gun-related violence, though: the right to bear arms.

It sad about the shooting this past week remember its no t the gun that kills, but the deranged person behind it. I wondered will this lead more Americans to seek his grace over our county?

Hope all involved survive this. People playing basketball leads to this kind of thing, hope this kind of thing stops.

We have plenty of gun laws on the books already. We don't enforce the ones we have, and when we do, the penalties aren't very strict. What makes you think more laws will make any one safer. There are laws against texting while driving, yet I see people do it on a daily basis, and it kills people. Laws don't mean very much when it comes to personal safety, accountability does.

And a 10 million dollar CDC investigation funded by an executive order actually disagrees with your viewpoint. And that's staggering, as the CDC is extremely anti gun (look at their stats vs the FBI stats, the CDC lists suicides as gun homicides).

The CDC was forced to basically beg for more money to look at this again, as the results weren't pretty for either the pro gun lobby or the anti gun lobby (but were really bad for the anti gun lobby). What's really interesting to note was that for 300,000 (and that number is unacceptably high) offensive uses of firearms, there were between 500,000 and 3 million defensive uses. That almost starts to sound like a life safety device, which might explain why police carry them.

Also interesting to note was that the number of mass shootings has held reasonably constant.

And honestly, why does it bother you? You live in the UK. The last time anyone was allowed to use a handgun for lawful purposes was at the 2012 olympics. The UK olympic team can't even practice on their own native soil, they have to go abroad to do it. And if you factor population disparity into the mix, the violent crime rate per 100,000 individuals is higher in the UK than it is in the US. South africa has less violent crime per 100,000 individuals than the UK does. Clearly gun control hasn't worked. Even if you factor in the difference between the definition of violent crime The UK still has a higher violent crime rate per 100,000 than the US does. The murder rate is lower though.

If you ban guns, people will use knives. Ban knives, people will use baseball bats. Ban baseball bats, people will use tire irons...

Ban everything. You'll still have people using sticks, stones, and fists.

Chicago is a gun free zone and by far Democrat. So what don't we get? That Democrats are immoral people who murder each other even in gun free zones.

People just refuse to get it.

Don't confuse them with facts. I've noticed they don't like it.
