WORLD | Shutdown enters day three | Edward Lee Pitts | Oct. 3, 2013

“There’s nothing piecemeal about making sure Americans have access to all of their national parks, or continuing life-saving cancer research,” Boehner said. “Instead of threatening to veto these bills as part of a scorched-earth strategy, the president should back these proposals just as he did our military pay bill. We will pass additional emergency measures in the coming days as we wait for President Obama and Senate Democrats to drop their refusal to negotiate.”

From someone that does not care for either Democrats or Republicans. I see the Republicans trying to exercise more influence on the direction of the US than the people trusted them with.

They were elected in aprt to reduce the deficit. They're working toward that goal, although I think often half-heartedly.

With a few exceptions of course. Really, I'm surprised they've gone this far.

I'm not sure if it should continue though. We cut the most important 38% of spending and now are faced with the flaming rubble piles and mushroom clouds all accross the nation. Sometimes I'm not sure how I survive walking to class from the dorm.

Yeah, I've been reduced to killing animals with my bare hands for sustenance.

The real problem is republicans in any form, supporting the destruction of america, I mean Obamacare. I would rather see the federal government not starting back up for a year than to see one stroke of the pen of this bill to be funded.

Any republican that votes for any part of this bill, should resign or be kicked out.

I am guessing you are not on the government payroll. :)

Why shouldn't the government be force to cut back, while they are forcing all of us to? I might add that most of gov'nmnt run and funded programs n offices are wasteful.

Because we are the great unwashed.

I can't believe the way Democrats are behaving, you would think someone in their position would show more maturity. And then they blame the Republicans for the shutdown, and then we have Pres. Obama acting like an innocent victim who's only trying to get the best for the American people. Ugh......if he cared so much about the American people , as he says, he would be negotiating instead of trying to impose his authoritarian decisions.

On a side note, I don't really have hope in the Republican party as it is right now, though I agree on implementing a more limited government and a new budget. Spending and taxing your way to prosperity just doesn't make sense. I believe this country needs to start over.

Obama deliberately works as hard as he can to make the shutdown as painful as possible as a political tactic. His aim is to keep massive deficit spending going full bore until collapse while blaming everything on everyone else. He fixes nothing. He exacerbates everything.

Dang man. The economy has ruined you. you must have had to selll all of your knives, even butter knives.

Otherwise, you would be able to go longer between hunts because you could bag bigger animals. You'd lie in wait after climbing trees, dropping to the ground and quickly dispatching larger game like a total boss.

The only thing that is a comfort though is that the new common sense knife laws have clearly made you a lot safer. They told us that universal background checks for knife sales would drastically reduce man-on-bambi crime, and they clearly have.

Perhaps if we put our heads together, we could come up with some sort of a net arrangement or a snare for venison.

Your light-hearted treatment of knives is a reproach to this nation's dignity. We teach our children not to run with scissors, and yet the presence of lethal assault knives is ubiquitous in our children's homes. When I was a child I was cut by a knife. And I cried. Is this the future we want for our children? We need to keep knives off the streets of America. Stricter knife control! It's the logical answer.

You must be right. I once tripped over a fence as a child. We must outlaw all fences. I once got heartburn eating a hamburger. Hamburgers must be made illegal. Once a bug bit me. Insects must be outlawed. I choked eating fish once. People who import fish must be given the strictest prison sentences. Etc... etc... and so on and so on. I'd laugh at how foolish this is except that so many people actually think like this it's not funny. It's dangerous and it's morally wrong.

Obamacare is no longer a bill. It has been the law of the land since March 23, 2010, and it has already been funded for at least a full year now. The roll-out was simply this week.

That's the rub with this whole thing. The shutdown does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to stop that act. This does not prevent Obamacare from being funded. The budget/appropriation currently held up from a vote has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with ANY money attached to Obamacare...but some representatives want to make Obamacare (which again has NOTHING to do with this budget) part of those negotiations or they will not vote on this current budget.

Speaker Boehner didn't desire to take this course of action at all, and it's actually noted that he promised earlier this year he wouldn't...but he's been pressured to keep his party unified (with majority voting power) else a small faction of his party (led by Ted Cruz) will refuse to vote on anything else, losing Boehner his 270 vote majority. So Boehner's in a tough position but it's because of internal power struggles within that party. In fact, there are numerous Republicans who didn't agree with this course of action along with Boehner, but who are loyal & respectful of his decision as leader of the party.

A large number of laws over our history have been repealed and/or defunded. What the legislature has the authority to pass, the legislature has the authority to repeal. What the legislature appropriates funds for, the legislature can defund.

Congress has already defunded mandatory programs within Obamacare and done so through appropriations measures. For example, Section 1857 of the continuing resolution Congress enacted in April 2011 (P.L. 112-10) “permanently cancelled” $2.2 billion in mandatory funding to Obamacare’s co-op health insurance program.

Another example, Congress has defunded elements of health care entitlements for decades. Every year since 1976, Congress has enacted the Hyde Amendment, which bans federal funding of abortion. This provision, enacted as part of discretionary appropriations legislation, prohibits abortion coverage in the Medicaid entitlement program.

Historically, Congress has used the “power of the purse” broadly to make key policy statements through defunding. For instance, in 1982 Congress acted to block the Reagan Administration’s policy for supporting the Contra forces opposing the Nicaraguan government. As part of Public Law 97-377, Congress prohibited both the Department of Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency from furnishing military equipment and support to any group for the purpose of overthrowing the Nicaraguan government. Even though defense spending is not funded through mandatory appropriations, the example demonstrates that defunding has been—and remains—a powerful tool Congress can use to affect public policy.

Are you starting to see how this works?

It is beyond dispute that Congress can use its power of the purse to defund Obamacare, both its mandatory and discretionary spending, in appropriations legislation. The lone remaining question is whether they will or not.

Personally, I do not have a problem with the government ensuring healthcare is available to American citizens. The problem I have is with the skyrocketing federal deficit feeding an enormous national debt that is going to bring an economic Greek tragedy to the U.S. in the not too distant future.

When the U.S. can no longer borrow money to support it's massive deficit spending on credit, only two choices will remain: austerity in which social services and Obamacare is severely curtailed or print money and devalue the currency destroying everyone on a fixed pension and ushering in an era of spiraling inflation.

Of course, that's assuming trade, taxation, etc... remain the same. Any actual solution (e.g. a solution that really works in reality) would need to be comprehensive and done correctly. There appears to be no one left with the intelligence, much less the power, to accomplish that.

What we are going to experience, is a complete systemic breakdown. Until then, it's a get all you can from the government until it crashes situation. Get all you can yahshua while you can because she's going to crash and the handouts are going to end afterwards. The rioting won't change a thing because there's nothing left to beg, borrow, or steal just like happened to Greece.

I agree (and thanks for the examples.)

My point was it's inaccurate to suggest (in the post I replied to) that the representatives' current actions are "an effort *not to fund* a bill..." That statement is incorrect. It is a "law already funded", NOT a "bill that needs funding". That's what I was commenting on. Their efforts are - like you say - "to DEfund" and/or repeal; to "REMOVE funding" from an "existing law".

Now there's no question that what the law-making branch of the government giveth it can taketh away. That wasn't something I was ever disputing. But in decency and in order, such measures (of repealing or defunding) are "ideally" [note I said "ideally", because I'm ALSO quite aware of the "reality" like in your last example] brought up for their *own* vote, and NOT earmarked as part of an ordinary budget bill that keeps the lights on, so to say...especially when (a) no moneys in that bill are going to fund the unwanted law and (b) we are trying to recover economically. When it comes around to providing additional funding for that law later on, THEN the legislative branch will have the power of the purse. "So what does this current strategy do *now*??" is my rhetorical question. The Law is STILL funded and in operation *now* independent of the shutdown.

This strategy makes sense to no one on either side of the isle, except for a small faction of junior representatives who're forcing Boehner's hand.

Indeed the deficit is a tremendous problem. But this problem has been baked unto the system since the first dollar. Indeed the final act of this Greek tragedy was already written as soon as USA started (once again) borrowing money from a private bank [the 3rd incarnation of such a bank; two of which the USA has dispatched in history].

A government can't borrow their currency - AT INTEREST - and expect to (a) EVER pay it back or (b) keep debt from exploding exponentially. The math just doesn't work. There's never enough money to cover the interest. Let's say to start the economy, the gov't borrowed $1 billion dollars from the Federal Reserve (a *private* bank that's NOT part of the government, as I'm sure you know).

$1 Billion loan at 0.15 interest = Debt of $1.15 Billion & Currency of $1 Billion (economic circulation)...

When the loan becomes due the Gov't has two options:

A) Give all of the money back (as if this is even possible)

Consequence: There would be $0 (zero) money in circulation...and the Gov't would STILL be in Debt for $150Mil to the Fed Reserve

B) Take out a new loan to cover previous debt ($1.15 Bil)

Consequence:

$1.15 Billion loan at 0.15 interest (for instance) = Debt of $1.33 Billion & Currency of $1 Billion (economic circulation)...

And when this "principal & interest" matures, we take out another to cover the previous interest...and another....and another...

This is the process of "raising the debt ceiling". And if we stopped here that (hopefully) would be enough to show the problem we're actually in and why NO POLITICIAN will EVER solve the debt problem UNLESS they propose that USA actually follow the constitution and *coin its own money* instead of borrowing it from a private bank...AT INTEREST.

Because our currency is produced from debt (i.e. debt = money), debt will ALWAYS increase faster than the money supply...and if ever we paid back ALL of the money, there would be no more money in circulation and we would STILL have a lingering debt we owe as a country. The only thing we can do is keep borrowing to cover the previous obscene debt. This is why Bush's debt was bigger than Clinton's...this is why Obama's debt is bigger than Bush's...and this is why the next president's debt (if we ever get there) will be bigger than Obama's. Exponentially.

---

Now my example didn't take into consideration what happens to the circulated money or what happens when creating investment products to be sold on the stock market. This is what happens:

$1 Billion (newly received from the *private* bank) is then distributed to regional branches of the SAME private bank, and then loaned a second time - AT INTEREST - in the form of business payroll credit lines, credit cards, personal loans, car loans, mortgages, financing for purchase items, etc. at a "9-to-1" loan-to-reserve ratio (i.e. for every $1 a bank has in reserves it can loan out $9 non-existent dollars). For our example, let's say every dollar is loaned out at 15% (just to keep it simple).

In other words, $1 Billion circulated = Debt of $10.35 Billion & Currency of $9 Billion...

If we add this to the initial currency loan we have a total debt of...

Total Debt - $11.5 Billion
Money Supply - $10 Billion

...and this is just the first iteration!

- Businesses go into debt just to operate and increase prices to cover that expense & their profit...

- Individuals go into debt, purchasing items above their means to live the dream...

- Individuals then (as "the public") purchase stock in these SAME businesses for their *own* profit, demanding that those shares increase in value, forcing businesses to increase profit and/or lower costs (i.e. outsourcing, layoffs, additional payroll debt to hire more workers) or increasing prices even more.

Ergo, Greed (all around) = Inflation and Wage Stagnation as a natural consequence.

Taxes are the other side of this coin; money that goes to pay back the loan to this private bank. Debt EQUALS (our) Money. And the game becomes one of musical chairs; hording as many dollars as possible while sticking another entity with the debt before the music stops; and what better entities than the USA and it's citizens. There is NO possible way to pay off this money; EVERY dollar in a bank account or in a wallet is *owed* to a privately-held bank, AT INTEREST.

Usury Is why USA has such an enormous National Debt.

Usury will be the fall of this country economically.

Acts like Obamacare are drops in the bucket as compared to the REAL cause of the deficit and debt. The money itself.
