A couple years ago, i told a brother of mine in Christ that GOD is able to provide us with all the rejoicing HE wants us to have but IN HIM, so there is no need in all this fun and entertainment that the world gives when i can just read the word of GOD, listen to teachings of GOD, do the things of GOD, praise and worship HIM daily.
no need to indulge in movies from the world, or books from the world, the LORD will provide the FUN we need, the Humor HE wants us to have, that total sold out, the second we spend on anything worldly we just feel the peace of god in us gradually decrease, and we feel closer to the flesh than to GOD. Is it not so? When we do spiritual things, we draw nigher to HIM, if we do carnal or worldly things we draw further from HIM,

my reasoning could be faulty, but i know what my desire is. i want to get LOST IN HIM,and i write this with tears, HE IS ALL THAT MATTERS TO ME

i do not know about the desire everyone in here has, but i have a lot of GOD that HE just put that desire in me..

This is the example of what I was talking about of someone that should stay away from things like Harry Potter. Some of us are able to recognize that things like Harry Potter, any other fiction books, TV, video games, etc. are not reality but mearly entertainment, and things like this aren't harmful to us because we have the discernment to keep them in check.

Actually yes. Kids seem to be pretty good about knowing the difference between imagination and reality. Or maybe it's just all the kids I teach on Sunday mornings.

I was actually meaning the opposite. Don't you think children are especially vulnerable to not knowing the difference between fantasy and reality? That there is a big risk, like in the case of that simple chick, that some children can be drawn into greater devilry by evil fantasies?

I'm coming to believe that children know and can discern a lot more than what we can. I see the child like faith that Jesus was talking about. Most of the time, when I'm teaching a biblical concept or principal and I'm really trying to hammer it home so to say, the kids are all like "yeah, we know that already, we get it."

I believe that there's something else that comes along and leads them astray when they grow up. And I believe many times it has to do with family issues, dealing with things like abuse, bullying, alcoholic parents, etc. Some of them probably turn to things like the occult or drugs, etc. as a way to deal with the pain of their past. Some of them that used to be able to separate fantasy from reality now use fantasy as more than just relaxing entertainment, but it's a way for them to cope and escape from the pains they have. But notice the root problem here isn't the fatasy stuff. And this is why I think attacking fantasy entertainment is just over exagerating.

Say you have a hurting teenager that is using Lord of the Rings books/games as a way to cope with the pains of their life. You preach to them that LotR is evil and of the occult and they should drop it. What you're telling them is to drop the one thing they have that helps them deal with what they're going through. What you're not doing is showing them (not just telling them but showing them) that there is an alternative. What you're not doing is dealing with the root issue of their problems, you're only dealing with the surface. At best, you might get the kid to replace LotR with some other thing that is still only a temporary fix, and not a permanent change in their lives like they need.

Have you ever been a wiccan or a neo-pagan or perhaps a white witch? Or do you have some knowledge of these? Harry Potter books and movies fit nicely into those beliefs. I have known people who do practice them. I used to hang out with them. There magick isn't make believe and it can easily turn into black magick.

I completely agree with you. Wiccans claim Harry Potter was the best thing for them as their numbers swelled after the books and movies came out. I don't understand why a Christian would say it is OK to read those nice cute books about casting spells. Can there be any concord between us and the enemy?

Something we agree on. Satan loves little compromises. I can hear him now, "Just don't be so rigid in this one little area. A little occult entertainment won't hurt you."

I cannot understand why this topic keeps coming up. It is about imagination, good and evil and fun. As I said on another thread, my daughter has read the books over and over. She could win any trivia contest about Harry Potter books.

So is she involved in the occult? NO!!!

She is a strong Christian, married well, caring of people (she is a social worker who loves her job caring for children!) and one of the kindest and God fearing people I know.

Yes, I read the books when she was young. I did NOT want her involved in the occult. I did NOT find the occult in those books. I found the struggle between good and evil in a fantasy world. That means it is easy to tell the difference between our world and the imaginary world JK Rowlings created.

I need to see some studies that correlate reading Harry Potter to occult involvement. I doubt there are any!

I would have given more reputation to Grace-Like-Rain in her comment about the Left Behind series. Now that is DANGEROUS fiction, but CC wouldn't let me.

Because so many people believe it is the truth, contrary to the Bible.

Fantasy is fantasy! Fiction that masquerades as truth is what I worry about for my grandchildren.

IF you were satan, would you assume that this movie would be a good vehicle to sell the virtues of wicca? Would you think it might be a good tool to snare some hurting teens into gate way entery points into the world of the occult (I.e. Ouija boards, tarrot, casting "good" spells, etc.) ?

No one here has said that every kid that watches a Harry Potter movie will end up as a satanist. However, I do claim that it does and has increased some (not all, not even the majority) to enter into wicca and other aspects of the occult.

Sure I agree its fantasy but when they sell games that have actual spells and teaches people how to say and do them it becomes reality.the wedji board is just a game for people to play but it has powerful things behind it .I know !it choked me and I could not breathe .that was reality for me.

I don't understand why you would read about nerds anyway. That is what Harry pothead seems to be to me. Nerds wanting to have power. Lol. I never read them but don't plan to.
