There's a lot to this(these) question(s)...Hmm...how to put this (stereotypes):

The Classic Business Woman (*seems to):

-gives the impression she's always in a hurry

-seems angry/stressed or otherwise very focused in what comes across as an unimpressed type attitude

-more or less doesn't seem to care about you due to this appearance, and thus is often overlooked by some

-may also possibly intimidate those who are laid-back or under-achievers with her assertiveness and achievement

When I'm working, I will usually look a lot like this woman, but not QUITE as unapproachable. :) Maybe a little more like this (minus the sissy purse):

for several reasons:

- Most people, men especially, tend to treat you the way you dress in the work place. If you want to be taken seriously, it's important to dress accordingly.
- And, you are right, there are times when a certain amount of intimidation is not a bad thing, such as a deposition, interrogation or testimony in court.
- Pants hide ankle holsters well.

Off the clock, I like to dress more like this :) :

Similarly, a lot of girls who dress down just in a common casual way (sweats, jeans and T, etc), do seem more approachable based on the what might be something like a lack of formality. It's hard to explain, but it's something like the difference between meeting someone who's chill, laughing/joking, and just having a good time vs someone who is busy/stressed or working. Not always, but in general, you just get a whole different vibe. I think it has something to do with that.

...and all of that to say, yes, I do think the way people dress/carry themselves/etc, has an effect on whether or not they are approached.

Just remember, the girls who don't take their time to dress up for you.. etc.. may be in their baggy sweats and tshirts all the time when they are married to you.. just saying (big complaint of alot of married men.. my wife just doesn't take care of herself anymore..and i say, then you should have picked someone who took more time on their appearance before ;) lol

Wellll..... rofl..... I was thinking more like cream/peach w/ roses and the men in black w/ green cumberbuns (there's the buns!). Chewbacca will do, I like big, strong hairy guys! Buns won't work, I have medium length, curly hair.... buns just won't do. Play the Star Wars theme song maybe? How about we invite the Broncos to our church wedding? Good compromize, huh?
lol Oh, the date has to be in the fall, it's when I feel the most romantic <3. Well, you have the after the wedding thing down pack, now we'll just have to work on the wedding day thing:p.

FALL? That's a deal breaker! You are perfect for me in every way but I won't settle for a lesser season. I'd rather be single for the rest of my life then give in on this. Why do women have to be so ridiculous about this? So inflexible? I should have guessed just by your clothes that you were high maintenance. You should have worn a burqa and just help me pick out my clothes and hair style that most women prefer. If you had only pursued me like Boaz did Babe Ruth, this never would have happened.

(tries to remove tongue from cheek, but it's stuck)

You could be wearing a potato sack, trust me - dress doesn't matter.
Oh, I disagree.

And I may have given the wrong impression earlier (I hate using the cell phone when I can't see all the stuff I wrote above because of the tiny lil' window!). Casual does NOT mean the same thing as sloppy! It's a deal breaker if she's one of those who goes to Wal Mart in her pajamas. Sorry, Toots, bye bye!

That's one thing that buts me. Another is actually for the guys. I notice that a couple will be on a date, and the gal is dressed up way more than the guy, who is in jeans and a T-shirt. C'mon, dude. It's gonna take her longer to get ready anyway...the least you can do is take fifteen seconds to put on a collared shirt.

As for the dressed up gal, let me clarify my previous answer: it depends on the setting. If she is in business attire and is at a restaurant at noon, I will assume she is meeting a client for a power lunch or some sort of thing. That would make her "unapproachable." If she is still in her business attire, but it is after work and she seems more relaxed, then that would make her "approachable."

Another dressed up gal would be the formal event. Usually a woman does not go unaccompanied to these events, so...."unapproachable." If, after being introduced, it becomes evident that she is her nerdy cousin's "plus one" because he couldn't find any other date, then she becomes "approachable."

Another BIG reason I said that women in casual and comfy clothes were more approachable too is that that is what they go about town doing their errands in. Women don't walk the dog or go to the dry cleaners while wearing their evening gown. They throw on a shirt/blouse and jeans...or a skirt if we are lucky, and go to grocery shopping, or do the same types of errands as guys do. It's way less intimidating to say hi and make small talk while waiting in the check-out line at the grocery store than at a cocktail party. So maybe it's the situation rather than the dress that makes the woman more/less approachable......hmmmmmmmmmm.

Then there is the high maintenance girl:

<span style="color:#0000cd;"><span style="font-family:book antiqua;">

I feel the urge to sing

Chorus:
Oh Whats clothes got to do... Got to do with it
What's clothes but the latest trend in fashion
Whats clothes got to do got to do with it
Who needs to see
when you have proverbs thirty one

Just remember, the girls who don't take their time to dress up for you.. etc.. may be in their baggy sweats and tshirts all the time when they are married to you..

Job 39:13 [Gavest thou] the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?

Jullianna,

I dress identical to this, but tend to get treated by how I dress ON the clock even when I am OFF the clock even though my personality does not really reflect that entirely. My personality really is more accurate of how I dress OFF the clock.

I think it is difficult when a woman carries two types of personality - the On/Off clock. She tends to get labeled the office meany who is not approachable.

I love it when people reply to things I write. Let's me know I'm not just some crazy person talking to myself and being ignored by the rest of e-society.

I see where you're going with this, and can appreciate that aspect.

I think what I was trying to say is more along the lines of a girl being comfortable in her skin, and not finding need to impress anyone in particular. I find that, personally, very attractive, and I believe that confident comfort would also appeal to many other men. As a few examples off the top of my head, John Mayer wrote a song called 'Comfortable' about this, and a song called "Duet" by Penny & Sparrow, though referencing both guy and girl dressing well, made point of the personality and behavior which made it all the more attractive. There are several other pop references, as well as personal, but I've made my point there.

Apart from that, I think we do (especially in Western Society) tend to put too great an emphasis or importance on appearance. I know some pretty lousy people who dress and look wonderful all the time, and adversely, some of the most beautiful souls who are more than a little lacking in appearances. It's just something to think about. The old 'don't judge a book by its cover' adage.

Similarly, though I don't entirely agree with EVERYTHING contained in scripture, let alone from an extreme literal view, there are some notes I tend to see and relate to on this subject with different writers:

In Matthew 6, among other great topics, Jesus speaks on not worrying about the clothes one wears (or anything else, really).

Peter, in his first letter around the 3rd chapter, also talks about not letting adornment be your judge of beauty. While he goes on to some, what I believe are cultural, views I don't necessarily agree with, I do resonate with his warning of what could become vanity on our part.

Similarly, in the OT, we see passages such as 1 Samuel 16:7, commenting that the outward appearance is not enough. Men (humankind to be better inclusive and gender neutral) judge based on the way things look, but God can see into the very heart or inmost depth of people, situations, or the like.

Now, I don't say this at all to try and shame or dissuade anyone from taking pride in how they dress, as I said I understand that viewpoint. I just also wanted to illustrate that there are other viewpoints, and more than 1 can be 'right' in its own respect. More food for thought...

Jules, I love ya, but I think you know as well as I that your INFJ PoliceBatSuperWoman powers can not only intimidate but PWN anyone whom you choose to cast them upon. ^_~ Otherwise, you're very endearing, so no worries.

I personally don't think it has much to do with how a woman dresses. It has to do with the mans confidence and interest. If I'm interested in a woman, it rarely has anything to do with the way she dresses. But I am interested, I will engage in conversation and probably compliment her on her style. In all reality, for me, I'm attracted to about any woman who expresses genuine beauty, however it is expressed. Most of the time it's a compilation of a few factors; her words, her actions and her looks. Basing an opinion soley upon one thing is, in my understanding, judgemental.

Guys..

Is the style in which a woman dresses a key to whether or not you will want to approach them or get to know them?

I dress modestly but I wear alot of black (mainly because we used to not be able to wear prints on platform ..just solids and they don't make alot of cute clothing in colors so.. it was easier to buy black)
but I dress kind of funky.
Bedazzled torn jeans (not showing leg tho) , a bit of bling on my tops, (not alot), heels, boots, skirts with leggings and boots.. cowboy boots with bootcut jeans and a sweater..you know just rocker /funk ...to church..I can wear jeans and a Tshirt and ball cap too yes..
but I don't wear those to church..
but most men like the dressed down look and I am not sure I get that..
I don't dress for them of course but I do want to look presentable.
so what I am wondering is, why do men easily approach women who dress down as opposed to women who dress up?
do we look intimidating? does our dress style make a difference in whether you think we are high maintenance or something??
just so you know, I shop sale racks, thrift stores, inexpensive younger clothing stores like Dots and dollar store type stores like Burke's.... I don't buy expensive clothing because not only am I thrifty but I also think why pay more when you can get it for less.?
I have set style trends for several ladies in church whose husbands love my cast offs on their wives..
but just wondered what the deal is with the dress down thing..

thanks:)

I use it as a filter....

If she's wearing shorts that higher then knee length... no thanks.

If she's wearing tight clothing in places where it can appear seductive... no thanks. (i.e. butt, chest area, legs... EVERYTHINGS! lol)

Relative to the topic... if she shows cleavage... no thanks.

Basically, if that's NOT how I'd like to see my daughters dressed up...no thanks. Because honestly, she is going to be the role model for my daughters. I don't want my daughters having a model like that. Its a sign of potential bad character. And granted she may be a Christian who is learning and getting rid of bad habits but we're talking about dating... meaning I got to make sure this girl is ready as a Christian woman to be a Christian mom for my kids. So, maybe when she gets rid of those bad habits... but right then and there... no thanks.

I'm trying to imagine exactly how you approach a woman based on her fashion-style-relative-to-motherhood.

"Hi there...
I can tell by by cut of your skirt you'd make a good mother to our children.
I realize we don't have children yet... but don't you think we should?"

: )

It can be difficult to make the transition sometimes. :)

I've always preferred a woman in a dress.
Bonus points if it's got a built-in apron!

WOOT!

Darn, you lost me on the "don't agree with everything in scripture" thing.. :-)

I totally get this Calmador though I have to say that pants on women do tend to have to be tight due to how bad it would look when they sag :-)
Anyway however, I one knew a girl whose church politely threw her off the praise team because she dressed seductively at church but during practice etc she wore daisy dukes and boots. Low cut tops.. I remember she left that church and came to ours and flirted with husbands while complaining about the church she left for not liking her style.

Some women!

I need to get to know the girl before making a decision about her dress.
