As someone in the singles forum stated some time ago, the most searched term on this website is "sex". Now, as I myself have noticed, there have been several occasions of young men on here begging questions like "Is masturbation sinful?" "Is it wrong to masturbate?" things of that nature. Tonight, I am cutting through the crap. There are obviously many different and disagreeing ideas as far as answers go. When someone asks these questions on a forum like this, there are more questions than answers. So again, to cut through all the crap, and get to a point where we no longer have to ask those questions and not have to deal with the technicalities of the biblical view point which can cause confusion.
A video was posted on YouTube dealing with the effects and science behind a porn addiction (which can also relate to a masturbation addiction). A porn or sex addiction has the exact same effect on the mind as a drug addiction. When we experience moments of extreme pleasure (such as a self given orgasm), it unleashes a chemical in the brain called dopamine. The more this chemical is released, the more likely it is that some of this chemical can end up spilling out, and be lost, which causes desensitization. At once, because so much pleasure is being released at once, when there is no one there to share this experience with, or there is no sense of intimacy (such in the case of a one night stand), when the chemical releases, and there is nothing there to stimulate your positive senses it leads to depression, and a greater need for the next time around looking for something new, more intense, more arousing. In short, we can truly, and honestly say, pornography rapes the mind. I can't explain the whole thing in fully but search for the science of internet porn on youtube and watch the short video, and it will be worth it.
That being said, I make this proposal I have seen shared by another website. You know No-shave November? I propose, the eloquently titled "No-Fap" November. It's time to take off your holier than though righteous attitudes. The fact is there are people on here who have/do struggle with sexual addiction and are bold enough to admit it. And I have no doubt there are others who have built up such a "christiany" persona here that, though they may not admit it, also deal with the same kind of addiction. So starting tomorrow, Nov. 1st, even if we don't think it's something we can give up, let's make it through one single month together. One month, no porn, no fapping, just Jesus. The time to stand as brothers together, is now. Most of us guys on here are single, and may have plans to be married, or married again, in which case, God has set aside one of his princesses for us, and they deserve our purity and devotion, even if we have not met them. For those of us who are single, and will very possibly remain that one, let's live a life of purity, and guide these young men to do the same. We are not our own, we were bought with a price, therefore let us honor God with our bodies.
Don't do this alone. Message another brother you can trust, or that you can look up to, and hold each other accountable. One month. Don't fail. Stand strong in Christ. Godspeed.
