In all seriousness, I'd check into the history of the author. Maybe, just maybe, they are Muslims. All textbooks will have some sort of bias to them.
 
In secular schools with the majority of teachers not having any religious backgrounds, why would anyone of any religion want their religion represented and or taught by someone who is not of that religion?

As a parent its my job to teach my kids about God not some low paid government functionary.

This sounds like another attempt to appease islam factions to show them we are tolerant of all religions....and they could care less.

Its a lose, lose.
 
Maybe they are trying to appease Islamic factions but all it ends up doing is giving bigots more fuel for their hatred. Some clown will probably organise a Quran burning now. I would prefer if they took the chapter out myself. As S said above, who wants secular people stumbling through religion.

if it's not entirely clear, we're talking about a World History book.

some basic understanding of Islam is necessary to understand the history of the Africa, the Mid East & Europe. some basic understanding of Judaism, Christianity is also necessary to understand the history of the Western world - and you can't understand the history of the far east & India without knowing some basic things about Buddhism and Hinduism.

i don't understand why this book doesn't also have chapters or at least sections dedicated to these other religions (not saying true Christianity is a religion, but the religiosified bastardization of it is integral to European history).

without having the book in my hand, though, how can i be sure that there aren't sections on this too? we know how reactionary & biased 'certain' news outlets are, and how the whole truth is sometimes hidden for the sake of sensationalism. they may have left out the fact that other religions are covered, figuring the 'lamestream media' would cover that.

another news source quotes a school district spokeswoman saying that 'information on Christianity and Judaism are spread throughout the book'

i find on another news source too that the tittle of the 'offensive' chapter is "Muslim Civilizations, 622-1629" -- not "Islam"

i'm leaning towards thinking that this is way overblown sensationalism. does it make sense to have a chapter on "Christian Civilizations" ? or is "European History 305 a.d. - " pretty much cover that?

i wish people would get as excited about studying the Word of God as they do attacking anything that says "Islam" on it. i'm afraid more people show up to protest mosque construction on a saturday than they do to attend worship on a sunday.

the real question in my mind is 'how can you teach Asian history without Taoism, Buddhism & Hinduism?'
and does the book actually do that? without the book in my hands, i can't make any true judgment of it -- i'm not relying on 'certain news outlets'​ to give me the whole truth about what's in this book.

Be good Americans and attend your local Mosque as instructed by your local Imam.
 
Personally I think this protest is ridiculous. There is a huge difference between teaching someone ABOUT a religion, opposed to teaching that the Religion is TRUE and must be followed.

If you appease every single religion then you will end up with a whole shelf of books on religion. This is a basic world history book read the summary of it .

It goes without saying that the vast majority of people in the USA know what Christianity is, but how many people actually know what Islam is and what Muslims believe? Not that many. , It is not going to send people to hell or corrupt people by learning about Islam. It is not an attack on Christianity, seriously, it stands without saying

This history book obviously explores modern history and the impact the Islamic world is making on the world today, so for the for many reasons Yit is obviously a much needed chapter for the students to understand what makes these people tick and their cultures.

You do not study Ancient American civilization without understanding the religious beliefs customs and practices of Aztecs, Mayans and North American Indians. In the same way you can not understand modern history without understanding Islam.

HOw many of you know the differences between Catholic and Baptist? Now how many of you know the differences between Sufism, Kharijism, Sunni and Shia? I doubt anyone will be rushing to google and wiki to find out about Catholics and Baptists, but I am sure many of you will be at least looking up Sufism and Kharijism.

Therefore why is it such a problem having a chapter to explain Islam in a history book to a Western Christian based nation?

actually, the title of the chapter of interest is:

"Muslim Civilizations, 622-1629"

so i'm not sure that it deals with any present-day impact, rather the conquests & formation of the Islamic states in the mid-east in that time period. understanding something about Islam is integral to understanding that time period & geographical region, for sure.

without having the book in my hands, it's impossible to say what's actually in it. judging by the chapter title it's got more to do with an overview of the civilizations formed by Islamic conquerors & adherents than it does religion. i wouldn't expect a certain media outlet to give an unbiased summary, though; no big surprise.

i'd like to know how many 'protesters' & how many people encouraging their children to tear the 32 pages out of the school's property will take the time to read the chapter?

That makes the protest even more ridiculous.

however my point still stands, to understand current and recent events it is a good idea to learn about the basics of Islam first.
 
Muslims claim that Islam is the natural order of things. A true Koranic system encompasses economics, religion and politics. In that sense, Islamic, sharia states are Muslim in a way that no western nation is "Christian" and no eastern nation is "Buddhist", etc. That is why it is correct to have a history calling states based on Sharia law "Islamic States" while countries with constitutions inspired by the Judeo-Christian heritage are correctly NOT called "Christian States".

Islam needs to take credit for its political and economic track record. Now that we have a history of over a millennium of sharia-based correctly called Muslim countries, we should ask the question - do the economics and politics of Sharia Law work? Are they positive? Are the people who have submitted to Sharia for generations prosperous and enlightened?
