It is the heat of battle between two MMA fighters hemmed inside an industrial metal cage. One kicks, punches and strangles his way to brutal victory. His opponent breaks down and cries tears for his mother.

But this is not an unusual end to another televised brawl between two fully grown brutes, this is kids's MMA, or Mixed Martial Arts, which is rapidly becoming one of the nation's fastest growing sports among children.

It is estimated that three million boys and girls, some as young as five-years-old launch themselves at each other weekly across the nation engaged in Pankration - some wearing no head protection and throwing punches boasting gloves little more than one-inch thick.

Inside the world of child cage fighting: Boys who are trained to attack in MMA arenas | Mail Online

Children should not be subjected to such. There are other healthier ways to promote self-discipline and build character. What ever happened to playing baseball or swimming?

Or hockey? Oh right, lots of hitting in that, but not till they are at least 13 or 14. In Canada, we love it!

Or for the timid of heart, there is figure skating! NOT! My daughter figure skated and coached for years. Every fall hurts. The biggest surprise of my life was dressing in hockey gear for a parent-child game when my boys were 5 and 7. I was completely protected from everything. Who knew that hockey players were such wimps?

By the way, I found baseball a lot of fun to play. It is just watching it that is boring!

Hockey poses a risk to mouth injuries. Protective gear is definitely important; nothing wimpy about it. :)

So there are plenty of alternatives to throwing children into a cage and watching them fight like animals. Not exactly civilized stuff.

I guess I was playing scrub, now that I think about it. Be good or be in the outfield!

We used to gather around almost daily to watch fights outside school, outside they would seldom be seen or stopped by teachers. Methods of fighting and so on would be illegal in the cage fight, plenty of biting and gouging, kicking when person was down. At least with cage fighting the kids are obviously willing to take part in it.

I've never read nor will I ever read the Hunger Games, but the basic concept seems to be in play here.

At the end of the day, it's still just kids solving their problems with violence though.

Unfortunately it is not always the choice of the child which is even more scary.

Study says stage moms, sports dads latch onto their kids' dreams

I think almost everyone in this thread lacks perspective on this subject. People in the world today refuse to acknowledge BOXING as a classic sport. As a former boxer (starting at a young age) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu martial artist, I don't see anything wrong with these kids doing this. Boxing/MMA causes the least dangerous/life altering injuries of any other sport. Cage fighting LOOKS incredibly brutal and violent on TV but once you slap the gloves (and various disciplines) on and actually participate in it, it feels like a physical game of chess. I refuse to refer to MMA as fighting. Why do U.S. MARINES and NAVY SEALS get stomped out almost every time in a real MMA bout? Because they are trained to FIGHT. MMA martial artists are not. They are trained to win in a very none-lethal and tactical sport.

This is yet another news story aiming to further soften the minds and bodies within contemporary America.

Also I would like to point out that the comment of McCain is severely outdated. McCain later revoked his comment after looking more into MMA and realizing that it is no where near the realm of "human cockfighting"
