I don't do it with children, but I sometimes do it with my cats. Not often, and it's usually followed by a sarcastic, non-baby-talk comment. For example, when I see my sleeping kitten, "Awww, who's a tired wittle boy?" and then "It's like you were at work all day. Oh no wait, that was ME. You bum."

I hate it when people do it all the time to their pets, though. Makes me want to barf and smack them upside the head with the Grow-Up stick.
The grow up stick is real?

I thought it was a myth. Like shooting a unicorn, or petting a hydra.

I voted I'm a grown man and I find it annoying....however I use that in a situational context.

Oops. I'm guilty as charged. I think it's cute when the other person does it and I do it too XD

awwww.......Juwiaaaaahhhna doesn't wike baby taaaawwwk???

Actually, I get in a weird mood every now and again and talk baby talk to my cats (about once every two weeks), but then I annoy myself with it and stop. I once went on a date with a gal who did the baby talk thing. I couldn't stand it. It was about 75% whiny and 25% baby talk. I'm sure she thought she was being cute, but I thought that it was just annoying and manipulative.

I was talking about this in chat the other day.
Just don't do it.
This applies to your love interest and pets as well. I don't even talk to babies in a baby voice lol I'd rather have a toothless dingo chew my head off.

(the dingo ate my baby)

omg, all I can say is yuck!! LOL

I don't mean the kind we sometimes use with actual babies (within limits :D). I'm talking about grown women using the vocabulary of a four year old or a fakey baby voice to manipulate men.

I'm not a fan of baby talk. However, I don't mind saying something is cute every once in a while.

I am guilty of nom nom..

but you know I think it's a personality thing :) I am a grown up..childlike woman who never got to have a childhood due to abuse from age 5.. I didn't have the freedom to be a little girl or a young lady..
and though I am not a BABY:) I have a very childlike personality and way about me..no baby talk and all that..though I have said "Sowwy" and "ruh Roh" but that was more "Scooby Doo" :)
I wouldn't say nom nom in public but I would write it in a forum or on FB
I am so glad people that know me love me so much:) cause they have never mentioned being annoyed by these traits and I seem to draw people to me so I guess it works:)
Also, my sister is the funniest most witty person I know and she says nom nom and other things that seem childlike at times..along with "Grown up" things.. and it's just her and I adore her..she is wonderful and I wish i were like her :)
So I think you have to take the person as a whole..
what is their personality like and does it fit them..
if so? then embrace their childlike ness..
I mean God did not make each of us alike and thank goodness:)
this is NOT however the same for the baby talking women who bat their eyelashes at men... :) lol
but then again for that? to each his/her own :) but then,
I don't like manipulation no matter what it looks like :)

I've never seen "omnomnom" as baby talk. I thought it originated on the internet.

It's OK to talk baby talk to cats.

So I just realized why some of us make sweet sounds and giggles and some baby talk (within reason) to babys.. Have you ever seen a cartoon where someone is just talking regularly to a child that would keep their attention? there has to be some crazy or high pitched or little kid voice:) so we emulate that:) I love to see my grandson giggle and coo and smile at me when I say "hi baby " in a high voice:) or "hi preshuuusss"

Something must be wrong with me, because I talk to children and babies with the same tone of voice I use with adults. Animals, too.

I might use...smaller words, but it never feels natural to do something weird with my vocal pitch or enunciation just because I'm talking to someone shorter than me. ^_^

How is the word 'yummy' on a recipe page seen as baby talk? Seems okay to me and I hate baby talk, more so when adults do it. Thankfully it's fairly uncommon in Australia, at least where I live.

I do as well. I think I'm just missing that piece.

I think it's different when you're talking to a baby, or even an animal. I don't mind that, I will talk to high pitched when I play with a baby. Not the whole time, but when I want to make them laugh.

I'm not a big fan when I hear a woman say in a goofy voice, that's so yummy, tee hee. Not that I'd hate the person or anything, it's like nails on a chalk board type reaction.
