TITHING???

What do you do if there is not enough money to live on? We (family of 5, 3 kids 10/7/1) live a very modest lifestyle. Drive older cars, don't spend on vacations, minimum cable to get computer/phone (no TV). We both work, me two jobs, wife does per-diem, homeschool are children, thirft store shoppers, and by no means waste money. We do our best to stay on top of bills but there is never enough. How does GOD look at this? Should I tithe?? Should my tithe go to food and gas??Does GOD want me to take from my kids/family basic needs..This really confuses me. I really enjoy and love our life as a family but I really struggle with this..I know that the Bible teaches us about sowing and reaping and there is a lesson to be learned here by trusting GOD for every need. I(we) are very blessed in numerous ways and I thank HIM constantly for that, yet there are areas of my(our) life that I cannot explore simply because of a lack of funds. There are things I want to explore for my kids yet hold back tithe money rather than provide for them...Any responses would be appreciated..

You're going to get both sides of the coin with this thread. Some will say tithe, some won't. You need to ask God and have Him tell you. I honestly believe that you can tithe your time, talent and skills to the body of Christ in these circumstances. I am also a firm believer that if you give God 10%, He will do more with the 90% than you could do with 100%. I am a firm believer in tithing. Only you and God can decide this for your life, though.

Some persons pay tithes and that is good but they forget other things which God delights in

When the bible says God loves a cheerful giver , many say God is saying you can tithe any amount . But that is incorrect

That veres has nothing to do with tithing . Cain and Abel had offering to offer Abel did it cheerfully but Vain did it grudgingly

When did tithing first start ? What was its purpose ?

My view is that you study and reflect and come to an answer. You piece together, as a Christian, what Jesus believed.

I have not had the difficult choices in life that you face today, but if I had, I would always make food for my children the first priority. Also, there is no reason to think that an obligation to give is independent of the circumstances. There are times when you prosper and give, and times when you can not. There is even a line in Corinthians about giving what you can, not what you can't (I apologize for the paraphrase). Perhaps there will be a time in the future when you can be more generous.

We always tithed even in the days when there was $0 left at the end of every month. However, I do not believe that tithing is in the New Testament.

We still tithe, but also give away a lot to different organizations as we have a bit more money now. So I suppose it is up to your conscience. But please do not make the children go hungry to pay a tithe!

My pastor just spoke on this issue 2 weeks ago. He said that by not tithing you're actually stealing from God. I do not know how God views it when it comes down to poor ppl. I grew up very poor and my family could never 'afford' to tithe. God still took care of us. My pastor said that when you tithe it's an act of faith that God will still provide all your needs. I know this doesn't really answer your question but (this is just my opinion) I'd say that tithing is a huge step of faith. If you feel lead by God to tithe or are feeling convicted for not doing so, then start and see what happens. I'm praying for you and your family. *hugs*

I've noticed some things about pastors who say that.
They usually have one or two really nice vehicles that are financed.
They frequently jet around the country to "missions conferences" and "pastor's seminars".
They occasionally issue checks in the Church's name for their own personal expenses.
Y'know, stuff like that.

I don't begrudge a pastor who makes a good living at pastoring,
but I don't like it when they compel their congregation to tithe.
God loves cheerful giving, not that which is given at the threat of "robbing God",
a phrase from Malachi 3:8 directed at the Levite priests,
and that pastors notoriously take out of context.
They always forget to read from the beginning of the book when delivering that line.
So convenient.

Since the Word of God reveals that tithing was an ordinance, (Malachi 3:7-8 ) and that Jesus Christ abolished the commandments contained in ordinances, (Ephesians 2:14-15) you are not required to tithe at all.

To tithe after the Word of God states that the ordinances were abolished is tantamount to calling the Word of God a lie and slapping Jesus Christ in the face.
