Haaretz journalist, Danny Rubinstein, who wrote an earlier book about Arafat, spent many hours interviewing Israelis officials. He says that they were obsessed with destroying Arafat’s political credibility and ultimately getting rid of him:

In the weeks and months before Arafat’s death, he [Rubinstein] said, people in Sharon’s inner circle talked constantly about how to get rid of him. “For me, it was very clear from the beginning. In September, 2003, Israeli vice-premier Ehud Olmert had told Israel Radio virtually the same thing, that murder was definitely under consideration:

Even as unlikely a source as Jeffrey Goldberg provides supporting evidence confirming Sharon’s enthusiasm for offing Arafat:

– Jan 22, 2002: 2 killed, 40 injured when a Fatah terrorist opened fire with an M-16 assault rifle near a bus stop in downtown Jerusalem.

– Feb 6, 2002 - A mother and her 11 year old daughter were murdered in their home by a Palestinian terrorist disguised in an IDF uniform. Both Fatah and Hamas claimed responsibility.
– Feb 18, 2002 : - Ahuva Amergi, 30, was killed and a 60-year old man was injured when a Palestinian terrorist opened fire on her car. Maj. Mor Elraz, 25, and St.-Sgt. Amir Mansouri, 21, who came to their assistance, were killed while trying to intercept the terrorist. The terrorist was killed when the explosives he was carrying were detonated. The Fatah al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack.
– Feb 22, 2002: Valery Ahmir, 59, was killed by terrorists in a Fatah drive-by shooting north of Jerusalem as he returned home from work.
– Feb 25, 2002: Avraham Fish, 65, and Aharon Gorov, 46, were killed in a Fatah terrorist shooting attack south of Bethlehem. Fish's daughter, 9 months pregnant, was seriously injured but delivered a baby girl.

Interesting, so do you think God uses murderers ? You must like movies like Taxi Driver.

For me for someone to be put to death in accordance to the Law you needed to be trialed justly. There are many verses in the bible about justice. That is one of the root of the problem in the world now. Too many ignorant people are acting as judge, jury and executioner. Would God be for this lack of discipline ?

from my understanding they contracted labs in sweden and russia and france to do the tests independently...the swedish lab concluded that it was polonium poisoning...the russian lab apparently concluded the opposite but then submitted a more inconclusive sounding report...and the french lab has been silent...

i saw that some palestinian activists are now insinuating that russia falsified their report to satisfy israel...it sounds like they don't like the results so they are now ironically accusing a lab they themselves had selected...

I think the timeframe would suggest that a lab examining the body could find no proof. I think this was explained to Arafats wife.

The Swiss lab examined Arafat's remains and his underclothes and a travel bag that he had with him in the days before his death in a Paris hospital and found that the polonium and lead amounts could not be naturally occurring. The timeframe of his illness and death were also consistent with polonium poisoning, they said.

I probably need to spend more time on this. I am under the pump at work at the moment.

I think the timeframe would suggest that a lab examining the body could find no proof. I think this was explained to Arafats wife.

The Swiss lab examined Arafat's remains and his underclothes and a travel bag that he had with him in the days before his death in a Paris hospital and found that the polonium and lead amounts could not be naturally occurring. The timeframe of his illness and death were also consistent with polonium poisoning, they said.

after i wrote that post i actually went and looked at a chart of the whole radioactive decay series that includes polonium-210...i learned that radon-222 decays to polonium-210 in several steps...one of the intermediate steps is a form of lead that has a half life long enough that most of it would still be there after eight years...with some of it decaying further to form polonium-210 even now...

radon-222 is a dangerous but all too common natural contaminant...and i found some articles that said unusually high levels of radon-222 were found in arafat's grave... the swiss lab claimed that the polonium-210 that they found could not have been naturally occurring...i am not a nuclear physicist but i honestly can't see how that could say that with any certainty...polonium-210 is polonium-210 regardless of where it came from... so maybe they are overstating their case and the polonium-210 they found really could have been the result of postmortem decay of naturally occurring radon-222 concentrated in arafat's grave...

another thing i found out is that radon-222 is also involved in some 'quack' medical remedies...i know that arafat was sickly near the end of his life due to his bad health habits and the israeli government denying him access to competent medical care...so i wonder if he resorted to some kind of pseudoscientific radon elixir... in that case the radon-222 could have mostly decayed into a lead isotope which continues to decay into fresh polonium-210 long after his death...the radon-222 itself could have also given him deadly cancer... that might also account for the secrecy surrounding arafat's death...including his wife having his medical records sealed...there would have been a reluctance to say anything that would imply that his death was possibly in any way self inflicted...

or the polonium-210 could have been planted... or the swiss lab could be incompetent and the russian lab could be right...

i wonder if they tested for that long lived lead isotope that is an intermediate step between radon-222 and polonium-210?
