Racism is a terrible sin. However, the LDS once embraced it as doctrine and are now trying to distance them from their own past. The LDS forbade blacks from holding the priesthood and entering into mormon temples up until 1975. The article below is their attempt to undo the sins of their past. They no claim that the old teaching of blacks dark skin was the mark signifying God's curse on them. However this is just another contradiction in a long line of mormon contradictions.

Today, the Church disavows the theories advanced in the past that black skin is a sign of divine disfavor or curse, or that it reflects actions in a premortal life; that mixed-race marriages are a sin; or that blacks or people of any other race or ethnicity are inferior in any way to anyone else. Church leaders today unequivocally condemn all racism, past and present, in any form.

Before 1975 LDS taught what they now condemn. Brigham Young once said "A single drop of black blood means that person can not hold the priesthood". This was not Young's opinion but Church doctrine! This racist past was even taught in LDS primary or the LDS version of Sunday school. Bruce R McKonckie, Mormon Apostle, wrote in his book Mormon Doctrine, published in 1966 said that Negros are not equal to other races. I clearly recall a mormon friend in High school explaining to me that non-whites had cursed skin, unbelievable!

I could add many other disgusting comments by past LDS prophets and LDS authorities but I have no stomach for hate filled hyperbole. I certainly would not wish to upset any one of color by posting more either. I hate how the LDS simply gloss over their past as if it is OK now. Their racist past indicates to me that they never knew God in the least.

This is quite interesting. As a non LDS church member all I will say is many society and cultures once condoned racism and now try to separate themselves.

My own country once condoned slavery. Now we definately try to distance our selves from the past. Same with segregation in schools. The nation tries to place that behind them.

I think it is good that the LDS church wishes to place doctrine that was clearly against the love which Christ spoke of behind them. I believe this would be pleasing to God.

Christ spoke of loving everyone! The closer any group gets to following this message the better.

The young lady has a point. I would love to cast aspersions on them, but I have friends who are Christians of the South and well...

There are more distinctive things we could criticize them about.

I grew up in the LDS church,
and I can tell you first hand, I have nothing, absolutely nothing good to say about ANY of their doctrine.

Most LDS people are very sweet, and very well-meaning people... I try to always be very kind to them.
However, the church itself, and the church doctrine, are absolutely unbiblical, blind, and dangerous.
 
Regarding the OP about the LDS church and racism.

I don't think Danschance is trying to call the LDS church racist, or racist in the past.
Although they clearly were racist in the past, that isn't the point at all.

The point is about changing God's word, and "their" God contradicting himself.
They have official policies which are dictated by "prophets".
When these official polices, which come from "prophets", are suddenly changed...
it shows their prophets are actually FALSE PROPHETS.

God doesn't change his mind about right and wrong, good and evil, every 5 seconds.
God doesn't contradict himself.
God's prophets don't contradict themselves... as they are speaking directly for God.
So when we see "prophets" changing their minds constantly... it is the mark of a false prophet.
When a church is built on these kinds of "false prophets", we can assess it is a false church.
 
I accuse Joseph Smith that he blended an religion with racism. Brigham Young continued that tradition and it was taught up until 1975. Now they are saying racism is bad but fail to mention it was church doctrine. The LDS have a long history of changing doctrine.

For example: The LDS once said polygamy was wrong and then embraced it and now claim it is wrong--a triple flip flop! This proves the humans, not God are running that Church. The LDS claim their church is the only true church and all others are apostate, but how can they be the only true Church with such shifting doctrines?

Yes the USA once had slavery and also fought a very bloody war over slavery. However this is about a religion claiming that God approved racism but now they are saying the opposite. Would you trust a Church that changes doctrine many times?

The book of Mormon has been edited beyond grammar, spelling and syntax. Whole paragraphs have been redacted. Names have been changed and words changed. They have edited their book of Mormon many times. That proves they can not be trusted.
 
The false religious system of LDS has always been racial. It's in the LDS church's DNA. But while historically they were prejudiced against blacks, because of their doctrine, they were accommodating of Native Americans in theory though not in practice when it came to property rights as the Ute tribe in Utah discovered.

When I look at U.S. demographical trends, specifically that since April 1, 2010 U.S. population growth has been 93.3% non-white, I expect the LDS church to simply change their doctrine and revise their history as they commonly do when the need arises to accommodate the impending demographic changes.
