My mother is super liberal, kind of a feminazi (would make Misty77 look like a patriarch :p), and she had been very anti-guns for a long time. Two years ago her and her co-workers received a death threat from someone my mother had to deliver a notice of being fired (she works in HR). After that, she decided concealed carry wasn't as bad as dieing unnecessarily.

I do want to say, I am generally very pacifist personally. I can't speak for others on this issue, as for me it is a personal commitment. I'm not really sure what scripture says, so I don't make any demands on others. As a history based major, I see a pretty common trend. When governments grab guns in large quantities, people tend to die in large quantities.

In this news story, a woman was ambushed by a man, tied up around her neck, then dragged. She was able to get to her handgun, shoot him, and escape. Some would say she shouldn't have the right to stop a guy from doing this to her. How is that pro-woman?

Link
In this story a convicted sex offender and rapist tried breaking into the place where a woman lived. She was able to prevent a possible sexual assault by fatally shooting him. Some would say the woman shouldn't have the right to prevent her own sexual assault with a gun.
Link
In this news story a sex offender was a threat to two women, and an armed citizen was able to prevent harm to them.

Oh now I understood your point of concern. I am very glad to get this cleared out.

Because a woman is ''potentially'' weaker than a male assaulter, and to ''level the playing field'' , only women should be allowed to carry guns.

After all, if a man also had a gun, and was armed, then what other advantage a woman could have, if she was attacked?

This is very pro woman.

ONLY women should be allowed to carry guns.

And many women would much prefer to take their chances and have the option to carry a gun and not need to use it.
Than to be denied that Right and one day wish they had it.
Having a firearm is a Right-
Not a privilege
Not to be controlled taxed, issued a license for or that right infringed or encroached upon in any way shape or form of the matter.
And sometimes the only way to assert that right to defend ones own property, affects, and right to life without trespass.....
Is to have the means to defend said right immediately.

So everyone has a right to carry a firearm? Including mentally unstable people?

Things may be different in your country, but in America a free citizen has the same rights and authority as a cop when witnessing a felony.
An attack which threatens personal harm and places ones life in danger -is....a felony in progress.
Many people in America exercise their common right to bear a firearm...simply
Because it's just too difficult to carry a cop around.
As well perhaps it would be good for you to know that when our country was first being settled as one that is free from dictatorship type rule:
almost every man by the age of 18, was a Patriot, an attorney, and a Marksmen.
That firearm you may be against in your own mind, actually helps to ensure your own rights against tyranny of those who wish to control you and use bodily harm to do it.
I find it wise not to leave ones own rights in the discretion of or in the hands of others. Because as we know, there's just a lot of ignorant not so educated people in the world that we run into everyday.

The only rights you have, are the ones you exercise and are willing to defend. That's it.

Well, alright. That is interesting about your country.

However I am very proud of the heritage of my country.

We brought down an entire empire through non-violent means and peaceful demonstration which has influenced millions of people around the world, including the American leader Martin Luther King (This monday was MLK Day in the USA for you) and Nelson Mandela among countless philosophers and thinkers of this world.

My country's consitution also emphasizes equality and the right and freedom of a diverse people. India is ethnically and culturally much more vast and diverse than the USA and yet we're unified as a country.

The French call us L'Inde, or many Indias, and yet the collective is that of one. True, we have not been perfect or always correct in our defense of our people, but we have deep morals and deep convictions about the wrong that is done.

The incident of rape that happened a year back is still very fresh on our minds. It saddens us. However, violence is not the solution.
It is an endless cycle and never ends. Our past has shown us that our victory was not in bloodshed or the use of weapons.

Personally, I think of it like this. One man died for all of humanity. And that one death is enough. No more. At least not at our hands

I support guns and the right to bear arms, and my perspective is influenced by the fact I am a Christian.
I just wanna say... I like my handgun. That is all.

What you're omitting Rachel is that violence also stops violence. For example, if a murderer is trying to murder you and you kill them in self-defense, they can no longer murder you or anyone else hence their violence is stopped. See how this works?

Yes thank you very much for illustrating how violence results in death and loss of human life. Even of a ''potential'' murderer.

Self defense is not murder. Rape is like murder because it steals a part of you that you will never get back.

The thread is about guns possibly preventing rape. School shootings only demonstrate the unarmed people are more likely to be victims of violence. You don't stop violence by disarming the innocent; that only increases it.

John 12:25

Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
That sounds dangerously close to victim-blaming and seems to imply that being victimized somehow makes you more "holy." There is nothing wrong with protecting yourself. If you think the Bible is full of pacifists, then you are only reading part of it.

The consequence of availability of guns is the increase in chances of having school shootings.

Do you think arming the innocent stops violence? Should we hand over guns to our children now?

Thank you Misty for bringing back the topic of the thread. Only women should be allowed to carry guns.

That sounded like a Bible verse to me.

My mention of firearms at the founding of our country was to help you understand that of course we wanted peace first. Although firearms are the only thing that allowed us to get out from under tyranny of corrupt govt.
Taxation without representation. Unlawful Search and seizure. Taking over ones home and land without just cause etc.
We did try to negotiate first.
They lied, and kept coming after the settlers here anyways, because Great Britain wanted us to be under the rule of Parliament. What The British were doing was actually taxing the American colonists to finance Great Britains Military HERE And the only reason they did so would be to further control the settlers they were taxing to begin with.
Even taking over settlers homes to house foreign British troops.
Another country saying they had jurisdiction and rule?
We said no and it was made clear that the only way we were able to escape the tyranny...was through war. sometimes it needs to happen. (Have you ever read the book of Esther?)
And France was actually one of the countries that helped supply us with supplies and ammunition and support to defend ourselves.
After this it was decided...and written in our Constitution...that all citizens have the right to keep and bear firearms for just such emergencies that may arise again in similar fashion in the future.
and its a good thing they did...those founding men had divine foresight.
And because of this, we enjoy the liberty (look that word up, its a good word) of protecting ourselves and loved ones need be.

So What do you suggest with regards to Tyranny of evil, if perhaps a rapist tried to attack yourself, or a loved one?
Offer him your cloak also?
Make him a sandwich after?
Kill him with kindness.
Let it be known that you would reward an attacker for the act so that in their mind it would encourage them to commit the crime even moreso?

It´s okey women defend themselves... But who knows then each gender does the wrong thing? A man cannot be raped by a woman (I guess) but giving people additional tools to hurt (or defend) does nothing against human sins.

Oh when I need to take up lessons in liberty(looked up the word, thank you) or history, especially from a citizen of a country that in the past has supported many despots and tyrannical regimes, I will ask you , ok? :)

Who are you to judge a person's mind? You can read the hearts of men?

I am sorry I am not as clever as you.
I just follow Jesus and the Bible.

Romans 17:21
Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. [SUP]18 [/SUP]If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. [SUP]19 [/SUP]Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it[SUP][i][/SUP] to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” [SUP]20 [/SUP]To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” [SUP]21 [/SUP]Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

PS- I read Esther. Did she kill Haman at her own hands?

I understand your stance Rachel, and I'm not asking you to ever defend yourself.
Only trying to help you understand why some people are put in that position.

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid ; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject , not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
6 For this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
7 Render therefore to all their dues:tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear;
honour to whom honour.

It's not outrage about a woman handling a gun - Guns are the not the answer or solution to violence.

Violence begets violence.

Is the refusal to allow someone to handle a gun based on emotions? Well, the questin would be how effective is a gun in close combat amongst a group of people?
How effective is it really as a form of self defence. Apparently, a finding suggests a woman in an incident was 12 times more likely to be killed if she was carrying a gun.

Plus we're considering the logistics nightmare of handling gun owners and putting in measures to ensure that they don't fall into wrong hands.

There is no guarantee. As was in the report, the gun is expensive and a quarter of orders for the gun were placed by men. A woman is more likely to be less economically well off than a man, and if both carry a gun, they would go back to the same power equation.

Honestly, I am against guns and the right to bear arms.

However my perspective is influenced by the fact I am a Christian.
Amen .

Those verses are in context of those in authority.

Not ordinary citizens. I understand this.

Romans 13:3-4

For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, [SUP]4 [/SUP]for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer.

Each of us has their own level of faith. If having faith in a gun makes you sleep better at night, then by all means you have every right to sleep with one.

As for me, I trust in the Lord and his protection.
And even if tomorrow I were to die, I want to imitate Christ who didn't reply to mockery, abuse and torture, and when he was on the cross, said Father forgive them for they know not what they do. Father into your hands, I commit my spirit!
