Many denomanitions teach we are to tithe. Does the church of our Lord teach this?

In the Old Testament they were commanded to give 10% that equaled to sometimes 23-25% they were also fined 20% if they didnt make the 10%. The good thing was you were killed like not keeping the Sabath.

1 Cor. 16:1,2 teaches us to give on the first day of the week as we been prospered.

The bible teches if we are trying to hold on the Old Law we have fallen from Grace Gla. 5:4

"God delights in a cheerful giver", I do not believe Jesus demanded any obligation on believers except to love God and love one another. But John teaches that if we see a brother or sister in need and do not help them then we are not loving one another. So certainly we are called to help others, but no specific "tithe" was instituted by Jesus or the apostles.

Vernon.....Did you read 1 Cor. 16: 1,2 or maybe you don't Worship/believe/use/care for/ the bible. I don't know what you are thinking. But, please read this. 1 Cor. 16:Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.[SUP]2[/SUP]Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

They had a collection for the church. You can't seprated yourself from The church and please God. So we must give to the Lords churh so we can preach the gospel to the world. I hope I have not offended you in any way its not my inttention.

Yes Paul called for an offering to help those struggling in Judea, and I am pretty sure that Paul expects the congregations to support those placed in leadership in the congregations because they spend their time working for the care of the sheep. I do not believe Paul established a "tithe", but expected all to give for the needs of the church, as they felt like giving. I could be wrong but I do not believe christians have been commanded to give a specific percentage of their wealth, which is how I understand a tithe to be. If I am wrong then please correct me.

Blessings in Christ.

No, But God does love a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:7]
Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Luke 6:38

Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

Any signs of Commanding it in those verses?

The only mention of the tithe was in Luke 18:12 & in Hebrews 7 about Abraham paying to Melchisedec (OT history), but nothing else about the tithe in the rest of the NT. There's plenty about giving in the Pauline epistles, but absolutely nothing about the law of tithing. Speaks for itself.

Paul did not teach salaries for the elders. He did teach elders to work secular jobs. Acts20

35[SUP]h[/SUP] For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, 36naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ 37Then the righteous[SUP]*[/SUP] will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ 40 And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’

Did he?
Luke 10:7 (KJV) [SUP]7 [/SUP]And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
1 Corinthians 9:3-14 (KJV) [SUP]3 [/SUP]Mine answer to them that do examine me is this, [SUP]4 [/SUP]Have we not power to eat and to drink? [SUP]5 [/SUP]Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? [SUP]6 [/SUP]Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working? [SUP]7 [/SUP]Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? [SUP]8 [/SUP]Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? [SUP]9 [/SUP]For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [SUP]10 [/SUP]Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. [SUP]11 [/SUP]If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? [SUP]12 [/SUP]If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ. [SUP]13 [/SUP]Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? [SUP]14 [/SUP]Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

Parablepete, phil is right. The Tithe is not required for Christians today.

The tithe was part of the Mosaic Law under the Old Covenant and Old Testament.

The Levitical priesthood received the tithe because they would need it for their maintenance (see Num. 3:5-12, Num.18:20, Deut. 12:12 and Deut. 14:27).

If one would study the issue of the Tithe more thoroughly, then they would see that most of the tithes that are referenced in the Holy Scriptures are tithes of Crops and Livestock.

The tithe was nullified by the Cross of Christ.

And that is why in the New Testament, no Christian is ever commanded to tithe.

Furthermore, Christians are to give from their heart. They are to give cheerfully and not grudgingly. They are not to give out of necessity (2 Cor. 9:7).

I am quite surprised this topic hasn't generated a lot of dissent with the law people in here. Surely if you think you should keep the sabbath one would think you should keep titheing.

The tithe, like all old testament law, was part of the pact between God and Israel. We better give what we can to the ministry. There is no doubt about that. How can our church help widows, orphans, and those in hard times without money? And if not money, time, maybe a few things around the house you can spare. Practice pure religion, that is what we should strive for(James 1:27). One person might be put in a real bind by giving a tithe, while another might just give a tithe to avoid giving what they can and should.

Tithe is ten percent. What that is, in all simplicity, is a ten percent tax. That is not an option, that is a demand. Our new covenant ASKS that we come to Christ willingly. We don't have to. We are our own free moral agents.
Now, that being said, God has always exhorted giving freely, willing, and of a cheerful heart. He has never told us not to support His flock, His ministers. Let your conscience be your guide. Give willingly, and generously, that is all He asks, and that is all that is required.

Tithing in the O.T. was for the past sin of Adam, but Christ has paid the price. But if you want to support someone that is spreading the word, then it is your prerogative or free-will to do so. But if you give but the one that you have given to doesn't do what is right with the offering, then don't worry about it, because you have done your part and which God know your intent. There will be a day for the other to show an accounting on every little actions that a person has done.

Mark 12:40
They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

Genesis 9:5
And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.

I believe if you want to be part of a church, you should support it at least. But it's not required, God loves a cheerful giver :)

My fault, I don't believe we are to Tithe. I am suprised that some here are NOT standing up for what their denomination teaches. Some baptist teach you tithe, correct me if I am wrong Rodger.

Happy to hear there are thinkers here. The tithe isn't for the NT or for our time. In fact, even in the OT, it was really a shadow of giving our whole lives to God. As far back as the OT, the first son was to be given to God, and in Christ, the first Son was given to God. Why was the first son to be given to God? Because if the firstfruits is/are given to God, then it sanctifies (or makes holy) everything that comes after. When the husband or wife of an unbeliever is sanctified, it automatically sanctifies the unbelieving spouse and children; when the fathers serve God, God's blessing automatically falls to the children to thousands of generations. The tithe is a shadow that shows that when we give the first part of ourselves or of anything to God, He is able to make everything else holy (i.e. own everything else), not that He wants to take from us (as if He needs our money or stuff) but He wants to keep safe or protected us and all we entrust to Him. This is the meaning of the tithe. However, in our time, we are to seek first the Kingdom (there again is the 'first' or 'firstfruits') so that all other things may be added to us. The tithe of the OT is the same principle slightly backwards: give first to God (seek God first) and He will protect all your other stuff (and He will provide everything else for you). I hope that makes sense. God is about first things first and then the things that follow after. Christ came first so that all who follow Him would be sanctified (made holy); i.e. would belong to God just as He ('the tithe' or 'seeking first the Kingdom') belongs to God.

Actually the tithe of livestock was the tenth animal no matter what shape.

Proverbs 11;24 There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.
