Americans are awful at geography. I think Europeans, with their countries being smaller and interacting with each other, have an advantage in learning geography just out of pure necessity.

I get all those Scandinahoovian countries' flags mixed up with the similar cross design, but different colors....whoops...."colours."

Our Canadian/Mexican neighbors know so many of our states/territories. Most of us know very little about theirs and they are right next door!

I think Catherder has a point... Europeans are all together over there in smaller countries and interact with one another a lot more due to proximity, and we don't have that advantage.

America is so large with so many regions and areas that we probably know the same amount of actual geographical knowledge... it's just mostly STILL America. 50 states plus territories? Each state's size, shape, geographical location, and resources... That's a lot to learn about all on it's own even without adding other countries that are an ocean away.

(Not that we aren't still ignorant of other world cultures. But I don't believe it's due to laziness. Just lack of necessity - or perhaps opportunity.)

Part of me wants to laugh at this and the other half feels guilty. :)

I lived in Germany for 7 years of my childhood (Mannheim, Heidelberg and Kaiserslautern). It's like a second home to me, which is strange since Texas is #1. :) So many wonderful memories of family time there. :)

Geography is one thing, what scares me is how little history some people seem to know (whether US, European or other).
It worries me that some people want to remove WW2 from the school history books. It is as if they want to pretend as if it never happened. I guess the same think will be attempted with the slave trade and apartheid.

It's probably just personal guilt on my part I'm feeling. :) I should make more of an effort than I have. Hopefully the Internet is helping all of us to learn more about one another!

As Burke and Santayana said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Funny you should mention this, as my precious friend/training officer I spoke of above is black. We talked about this over lunch. He did not want to see a couple of movies out now (12 Days a Slave and The Butler) because they caused him to think of things he preferred not to.

But we talked about the Hebrew people in particular, how they had been enslaved so many times. That was lost for a time and then the time MarkMulder mentioned above happened.

We do need to keep all of these things in mind, especially as the body of Christ and in how we deal with one another.

Pshhh, Jules....your standards are way too high. I'll give you 50 bucks, if you can go out on to a street and ask 10 people what the names of all 50 states are. If at least half of them can do it, the money is yours. lol

I could do it! But I'd have to sing this...and they would be in alphabetical order. I could probably get at least 40 of the capitals as well...

lol, that's impressive. I could do it but certainly not in alphabetical order. That's how I learned my days of the week. A ridiculously catchy song my kindergarden teacher made us sing.....it still haunts me sometimes by getting stuck in my head. Oh ya, random thought but I didn't notice the ABC song was a rip off of twinkle twinkle little star until recently

OK, so you guys were right.

Several months ago, I posted about going for a paid position as a church musician. It turned out the "church" had nothing to do with Christ, but just gave touchy-feely secular humanist feel good messages. Any hymns and special music referencing Christ would be edited/censored. I notified them that I was no longer interested in the position, stating that I would not be able to censor Christ from spiritual music.

You guys said that God would give me something better.

Well, God gave me something better. A member of a community choir I am in sent out an S.O.S. in mid-December that their church needed a pianist to get them through their Christmas services. Their pianist, who had become deathly ill (and has since passed away), could no longer play. The church then decided to hire me on permanently. I make more at the Lutheran Church than I would have at the secular humanist church. I'm not Lutheran, but am learning their worship "format" and their liturgies, which was confusing at first.

So....thanks for all the encouragement you gave me back then. Isn't it nice to be told that you were right? :)
