Sun, Jan 5 I started with body aches and chills. Thought it was just another cold. By Tues, January 7 I was feeling worse so I went to the doc and was told I had a rare strain of the flu. The doc gave me Tamiflu, and I started taking it that day. Wed, Jan 8 I woke up and started feeling better. I went all day doing chores and what not, with no probs. I went take a nap around 2pm and around 6pm I awoke to body aches and chills. I took some Tylenol and went back to bed. I woke up again around 1am with body aches and chills and took more Tylenol. Thurs, Jan 9 I called my doc and told them I needed to be seen again. My sister had to take me because I was weak and couldnt drive. The doc told me I had pneumonia and sent me home with a strong antibiotic and anti vomit pills since I was also vomiting. He tells me if I don't feel better by Sat, Jan 11 to call him so I could get a chest xray. I couldnt make it to Sat. Fri Jan 10 I was so weak, I ended up falling in the bathroom. My sister was home and called 911. They took me to the hospital. I found out I had the pH1N1 strain of the flu (rare strain, they had to contact the CDC) and double pneumonia. I was put into the ICU around 10pm that night. By Sat night, they told me we have to put you on the ventilator and that is all I remember. I didn't wake up until Jan 18, which was the next Sat. I was on the vent for 7 days and in ICU for 11. I don't remember anything that happened during that time I was out, but my mom and sister told me stories of how they were having a hard time keeping my fever down and other stories. The only thing I remember is the hallucinations I was having from all the medications I was given.
During this time both my legs and arms became weak. I couldnt raise my hands to wipe my eyes or lift my legs or anything. When I was finally moved out of ICU on Jan 21, I could move my arms and left leg with no probs. My right leg is still weak. I had to go to another hospital for a week and a half for physical therapy for my leg and to get weened off of oxygen. I got out of that hospital on Tues, Feb 4.
As of today, my right leg is still a little weak, but much better than when I started. My right foot hurts, and they think it is a damaged nerve that I got while I was in ICU. I will be going to an orthopedic doc on Monday, the 10 so hopefully he can pinpoint where the damage is and help me get back to my old self.
