**Preface: I know there's a rule against things that are offensive... I hope this isn't. I wont hold any grudges if this thread or my account is deleted. I'm new here, first post, but I hope I can eventually prove to be a productive asset to this community.**

Hello! I'm Yer. I've been a Satanist since I was roughly 11 years old, and I'm currently nearing my 21st birthday. I've kept my religion a secret to all but my closest friends, because most of my friends are Christian, and... I'm afraid of abuse. I always get this idea, from movies and the like, that Satanism is this evil thing which people are supposed to hate, and exorcise, which involves freaky rituals and wicked magic. That's not what it is to me, and I'd say I'm a decent guy. I volunteer at a local animal shelter, I help out fund raisers for a National Park, and I'm the most polite person I know... I'm just so afraid that if I start admitting that this is what I believe, openly, I'll be... looked at a different way. My parents don't even know; I'm so afraid. ...And mostly alone.

My question to you is, if you had a friend, not so much a close one, but an acquaintance, and he came out as a Satanist, how would you, personally, react, as a Christian? What if it was your *child*? I don't like hiding this about myself, but I don't really want to go back to Christianity. I just need some reassurance that I wouldn't be... hated. Or would I? Should I keep this to myself? I'm so conflicted, and it surprises me that a Christian forum is a place I feel like I can ask for advise.

Well, if you believe there is a Satan then you must also believe there is a God in Heaven.

Ah I am somewhat familiar with the many strains of Satanism. The funny thing about so-called Satanists no matter what stripe of satanism they claim to profess there is one common factor with them all: None of them even know who Satan is.

Why would you want to worship the snake that beguiled the race of Man to lose immortality?

Why follow the Adversary and Dragon, the father of lies and the first murderer? Why follow Satan the most supremely unwise being that leads himself and all that follow him to Death?

You should instead consider following Jesus whom wants to save all of humanity and lead them to the waters of eternal life. Jesus is patient and there is no lie in Him, so start slowly my brother and come to the Truth and let Jesus help lead you to life.

This is what I mean. I'm worried that my friends will start to look down on me. Assume I don't know what the word is when I say Satan. I'm worried they wont want to be associated with me anymore, and then I'll be totally alone. I don't wish to give myself to something I reject, I want my friends to not disrespect me, and I want to feel like I'm being true to them, and cease the lie that is me going to church with them and pretending to be something I'm not. It's a terrible situation for me. :(

Well, if you believe there is a Satan then you must also believe there is a God in Heaven.
I'm a LaVey Satanist. I don't believe in Heaven, Hell, God, or Satan. Only Satan as the opposition to religion in general; the word's original meaning.

Oh, haha, didn't think of that. Put my birthday as June 6, 1966. I was born in 1993. :)

OK then hehe...so how did you get into it? Satanism that is? And for the record I don't hate you for being a Satanist, just as much as I don't hate anyone else who isn't a Christian but that doesn't mean I agree with your choice(s).

Well, I was raised Catholic, and at around age 10 my uncle gave me some old tarot cards, divination runes, and wiccan books. The magic astounded me, and the magic pulled me into Setism when I was 11. Had an older friend who worshipped Set. Eventually, I started to see the magic as a sort of placebo, and began to realize that most religions had the same ideas. Turned to atheist for a while, then picked up a copy of the Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey. Loved it. It's down to earth. Fleshy and great. There is no good or evil, and all that. '

And I totally get where you're coming from, not agreeing with someone's choices. Like I don't agree with Hitler's, but I don't hate him. I assume. But I'm still worried that my friends, being the close-knit group that they are... would immediately start to... talk behind my back or sever ties with me totally. I mean, what would you do if a guy you went to church with a couple times admitted to being Satanist for ~10 years?

Okay, so you are basically an Atheist.

LaVeyan Satanism or Atheistic Satanism, often referred to simply as Satanism among most adherents, is a tradition in Satanism founded in 1966 by Anton LaVey. Its core beliefs and philosophies are based on individualism, secular humanism, religious skepticism, freethought, epicureanism and "eye for an eye" morality.

Contrary to popular belief, LaVeyan Satanism does not involve the worship of "the devil" or any such deities, it is an
atheistic philosophy that uses the character of "Satan" as asymbol of pride, carnality, enlightenment, undefiled wisdom, and of a cosmos which Satanists perceive to be permeated and motivated by a force that has been given many names by humans over the course of time.

It would seem to me that it is the Satanism itself that is your problem. You love your friends and just want to be good to them and them to you. There is nothing wrong in that.

However, as with most satanists, you have no concept of Satan. Satan means Adversary. Not just adversary of religion, but the enemy of all. So too you can see Satan is your adversary. You yourself testify to this that your own worship of Satan has led you to feel uncomfortable and alone and has even got you to mistrust your friends and family.

LaVey satanism on the face seems like just simple atheism, but this is simply a lie the LaVeyists use to recruit naive candidates. After all they say they believe in no God or Devil, yet they then turn around and contradict themselves by worshipping the Devil. Then if one takes a little scrutinous look at LaVeyism you'll see its really just an excuse for LaVeyists to partake in demonic rituals like all occult groups as well as other foul things. This just further demonstrates that Laveyists like all Satanists trully know nothing about their own dark master.

As I said, you'd be better off just giving up on the wizard LaVey and Satan and trying to learn more about Jesus. I myself am not a church goer and you do not have to be all showy and flashy. It's okay if you do not know everything about the Bible and God, I don't know everything myself, but I do know I can learn more. You just have to start simple because Jesus is patient and will forgive you and help you learn. When in doubt, go to Jesus, because even if you don't believe in Satan or God right at the moment, Jesus is verifiable. Just at least ponder Jesus' words, they are quite wise and healing and very much relevant even in today's time.

Okay, so you are basically an Atheist.

It's like me calling you "Basically a Christian" if you're Catholic. You would be, but have a much different set of beliefs and/or philosophies from, say, a Lutheran. As I do from the average Atheist who thinks dead tyrants were evil. :)

In reading these posts I have to wonder why use the word "Satan" ?
If practically you are an atheist toward christianity why antagonize them with a word from their beliefs?

I know you can defend the true meaning of the word "satan" but if most people are not aware and instantly think the devil, then why all the trouble.

This is partly why I am considering not calling myself an atheist anymore because of the bad connotations that most people associate with the word. Every time i have to explain what the word "atheism" actually means so really it has lost its meaning just as "satanism" has from your perspective.

More . . .

You live by these?!?

The religion of Satanism, as LaVey espouses it, is centered almost exclusively upon the concept of being one's own god; as such, values and attachments such as love, affection, and caring, along with opposing concepts such as hate and wrath, are to be disseminated at the discretion of the individual Satanist.

The Nine Satanic Statements

  1. Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence.
  2. Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams.
  3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit.
  4. Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it, instead of love wasted on ingrates.
  5. Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek.
  6. Satan represents responsibility to the responsible instead of concern for psychic vampires.
  7. Satan represents man as just another animal (sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all fours), who, because of his “divine spiritual and intellectual development,” has become the most vicious animal of all.
  8. Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification.
  9. Satan has been the best friend the Church has ever had, as he has kept it in business all these years.

And you live by these, too, as espoused to the church?!?

Philosophy of LaVeyan Satanism

The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth

  1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
  2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
  3. When in another's lair, show them respect or else do not go there.
  4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat them cruelly and without mercy.
  5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
  6. Do not take that which does not belong to you, unless it is a burden to the other person and they cry out to be relieved.
  7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
  8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
  9. Do not harm young children.
  10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
  11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.

What would I do? Hmm..Would knowing what I would do give you comfort? Because what I would do does not mean your friends would do the same thing but none the less, I would do the same thing now as ask how did you get into it, why? so on and so forth. I wouldn't severe ties with you because you are a satanist and if your friends end up talking behind your back, that's nothing on your fault, it would be their sin.

So, what keeps you as a satanist? How does it effect your life? Do you see it as the truth? You say the true meaning of the word satanist is 'adversary' it is because satan, the fallen angel is the adversary. So why would you want to be an adversary?
Hope I haven't asked too many questions, I want to understand because it's not everyday I come across a 'satanist' hehe

Interesting, I did not know this ....
I would say then that as a "satanist" you are more of an "Anti-christian" kind of swapping the vices for the virtues.
Whereas most atheists simply do not care and want nothing to do with the church.

I have no master but myself. Please don't undermine my beliefs, as I could yours; it would become unproductive.

I just... want to know how I can admit to my friends that I'm Satanist("Atheist"*Hiss*), without them thinking less of me, or that I think less of them that I did before admitting it.

It's looking like I can't. :/
I wont go back to rules I don't agree with. But I can't sit here pretending I'm some saint with my friends and parents when I go home and indulge on pretty much every sin but unnecessary violence.

If I can't do that... I don't know what I'll do. Find new friends? If I wanted to move, I'd have to be homeless. Take my notebooks and books and pencils and steal until I die. Or, until I got a job as my grimy self and ...worked with people in a Satanist-friendly place. I don't want change. I just want a release.

The Nine Satanic Sins

In 1987, Anton LaVey has stated that followers of LaVeyan Satanism should avoid the following actions, calling them the "Nine Satanic Sins"

  4. Self-deceit
  5. Herd Conformity
  6. Lack of Perspective
  7. Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies

When it suits me. I follow my guidelines until they harm me, which is exactly why I'm posting here. It's harming me to not ask for help, to "not tell my troubles to others unless I am sure they want to hear them". Please don't mock what I follow; good and evil are relative to the viewer. If I was to tell you a book was red, and show you a blue book, you could tell me I was wrong all day until I showed you that the side facing me was, in fact, red.

You can't control what their actions are going to be, just tell them. I've learnt over the years, and still learning to not worry about what others think of me because I have a strong God who is for me. But as for yourself, with 'self' being in the centre of all things, that would be much harder to do I would imagine.

Absolutely. An eye for beauty is great, why be prideful when it's counterproductive, why would anyone want to lie to himself? And, does anyone strive to be stupid?
