What is amazing is when polygamy was banned by Augustine; he acknowledged the reasons were secular not biblical.
Now it has gone full circle where people now call polygamy adultery.
Some people think they know better than God I guess.

Interesting how everything was in a singular, not plural context
. I don't think this advice would make sense in a polygamous marriage. How would the wife have authority ''over her own husband's body'' if there are like 5 wives fighting over that authority? Also notice verse 5. ''Unless you both agree...'', NOT ''Unless you all agree...''. And notice also how Paul was actively giving advice here, and he is not advising anyone to get more wives. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 1 Timothy 3:2
And not to mention....
And the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Mark 10:7

many years ago, my 7 year old son watched a tv program that talked about the mormon multiple marriages. with the clarity of a small child, he looked, then asked: "What if they gang up on you?"
It's interesting, because it's illegal to have a bartender in sight at restaurants in Utah. Definitely an odd combination. I suppose it's because Mormons hate alcohol, but are okay with polygamy.

The timothy quote was directed to elders and deacons not all believers.
The 1 Corinthian related to the stress of that time and was unique to the early church.
As I said Augustine stated the reason he banned polygamy was not biblical but secular. He found nothing in the bible to ban polygamy. He went ahead and did it anyway.
Maybe asylum seekers will now be able claim the right to bring in four wives each. Solution: build more welfare offices, I guess...

I get where you're coming from because I've seen Mormons using that argument but...
Do you think only bishops should be blameless, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, and hospitable? Of course an elder has more responsibility because he has a position of influence, but shouldn't all Christians strive to be as godly as possible? Why is it that the elder has to be a man of only one wife? Maybe because it is the ideal situation, especially for an elder? In that case, all Christians should follow the example, shouldn't we?
Also to say that just that part of 1 Corinthians was ONLY directed to that church at that age would be the same as saying that none of the letters apply to us right now. Very dangerous. Of course we should consider the context, but the command is not only for that time. The Philippians apparently had a habit of getting discouraged from doing good when Paul was away (2:12) but that doesn't mean we are not to follow the commands he gave them just because we are not the Philippians.
Augustine was a great teacher but he was not inerrant.''The two shall become one flesh'' from the beginning, later quoted by Jesus himself, remains as the command. Not to mention that the analogy between Husband and Wife and Christ and the Church wouldn't make sense if a man married many women. As far as I know, Jesus only has one Church.
God was explicit in the OT that polygamy was allowed. God actually referred to it as a blessing for David.
Jesus was very clear in what he expected. Can you please provide explicit statement from Jesus where this was overturned.

You ignored what I said on the post regarding the verses I listed (not that they are the only ones btw). We are not under the OT Covenant or times. Even Jesus himself recognized that some things were allowed because of the hardness of people's hearts (like divorce, which God hates).
And I don't know what you mean by ''Jesus was very clear in what he expected''. But yes, He was very clear. He said ''The two shall become one flesh''. There is nothing more clear than saying ''the two'', not ''all of you''.
God never once condoned polygamy in the bible. David even repented of his sin and turned from it. IF you read carefully all the cases of polygamy in the OT you will see it results in negative consequences. Never once did God praise anyone for having multiple wives. He may have "allowed" it(by not striking them dead for doing it), but never condoned it either.
Is it not Written in the New Testament that marriage is to be between A man and A woman, as in, singular?
