A lot of little girls go through tomboy phases in elementary school. Then they become teenagers and grow out of it. It doesn't have anything to do with "homosexuality" or "alternative lifestyles". She's just 8 years old, fer cryin' out loud!

I was a tomboy, but wore long hair. I wonder if they would have stopped me from climbing trees and riding my bike on dirt trails?

Very, very sad. Let's create a gender stereotype, and if the mom gets tired of untangling the knots in a girl's hair, and gets it cut short, then ban her! The mom should have spoken out! (Speaking as someone whose mother really got tired of the screaming when she brushed out my hair after a bath!)

She donated her hair to locks of love. Her hair was down to her waist, but wanted to give it to a child with cancer.

All private christian schools likely aren't the same, but I went to one for 2-3 years when I was growing up. One thing that should be understood is that christian schools are private schools, and most have a dress code. If they're too poor to buy her full length skirts then their reluctance to comply with the rules would be understandable. But I doubt that's the case since you have to pay for private schools in the first place. And it seems more like a case of the parents wanting a private institution to admit their kid but not wanting to abide by the rules that were most likely given out to them from the beginning of the school year in booklet form.

Yes, that's a very good point. I'm applying for a private college right now, and freshman are required (unless married) to live on campus, and there's a men's dorm and women's dorm, and the dorms have curfews in which the student must be back in at night. Premarital sex is prohibited, and one girl actually got expelled for sneaking a guy into her room.

It's a great school with a program where if you attend classes full time, you work 15 hours a week for the school - and that is your tuition. In other words, you could attend this school for free if you're a hard worker and have the time. If I get in, I could graduate without incurring anymore debt. And thankfully, my school-loan debt is not really bad to begin with, considering the number of years I have went to school.

I completely support a private school's standards (post #5 was a knee-jerk reaction - now that I think about it, I'm actually not opposed to it). I also support an individual church's right to exclude people. Do I agree with it? Not really. (You don't have to agree with something to support it and see the legitimacy of the practice.) But these are private institutions and have the right to exclude others. I think a lot of churches have abused that right, and deterred many from the faith because of it, but I'm not really trying to argue about that. I am just saying that I understand your sentiment, Aristocat.
