Boldness defined is our willingness to venture out and do the right thing at the right time, regardless of the barriers or fears we may encounter.Regardless of the negative words even from other well meanig Christians who may be at a different station in their own walk. Boldness as trait of Jesus enables us to speak the truth, and perform a task without fear of the consequences or results, because, it is the right, and Biblical thing to do.If we are truly following the example of Jesus then we lay aside our own thoughts and follow his way very simply.
It is realizing that God is in control. The comforter that was pronised is there within us, and beside us, and He will take care of us. Therefore, we do not need to fear what others can do nor what they say and espically no devil from hell or any hell agent; rather, we are to concentrate on our character and call, and do it with passion and conviction with a contrite heart. (Genesis 6; 1 Kings 18; Proverbs 28:1; Isaiah 7:9; Daniel 3,6; 2 Corinthians 5:6-8; 7:16; Ephesians 6:13-14; Hebrews 13:6). The whole book of Titus
Cynicism, Cowardice, Fearfulness, Deception, Discouragement, and Legalism are all opposites of boldness and sad to say many are caught in the web of each from time to time even mature believers. These negative traits create a negative attitude that is infectious to others and cause us to become stumbling blacks to others even if that is not our intent.
It causes people not to take the chance to go forward with what God is calling them to. Thus, the person and/or church remains ensnared in fear, allowing obstacles to stop them so that the work our Lord has for them remains undone. This is used by the enemy so often it is common. To be bold means I say what the word says and use compassion to say it but that I say it and mean it Just like Jesus did. what are your thoughts?

An example of boldness:-

'And when they had set them in the midst, they asked,
"By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?"
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them,

"Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,
If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man,
by what means he is made whole;
Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel,
that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,
whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead,
even by Him doth this man stand here before you whole.
This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders,
which is become the head of the corner.
Neither is there salvation in any other:
for there is none other name under heaven given among men,
whereby we must be saved."'

It's result:-

'Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John,
and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled;
and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.'

(Acts 4:7-13)

PRAISE GOD!

'... And now, Lord, behold their threatenings:
and grant unto thy servants,
that with all boldness they may speak
Thy word, ...'
(Act 4:29)

'... According to my earnest expectation and my hope,
that in nothing I shall be ashamed,
but that with all boldness,
as always, so now also
Christ shall be magnified in my body,
whether it be by life, or by death. ...'

(Philippians 1:20)

Hi there,

These verses have contexts which are important to their understanding and also to any application we may seek to make, to ignore the context of any passage, I am sure you will agree, is fatal to our understanding, walk and witness. For the object for each of us is, like Paul, that 'Christ shall be magnified'.

Hello again,

Boldness: Strongs: G3954 - (noun) 'outspokenness' (Acts 4:13); (adverb) 'plainly', 'frankly'. (Mark 8:32)

Translated also, bold, boldly, boldness, boldness (of speech), confidence, (-freely, -openly, -plainly, -plainness)

Mark 8:32; John 7:4,13,26; 10:24; 11:14,54; 16:25,29; 18:20
Acts 2:29; 4:13,29,31; 28:31
2 Cor. 3:12; 7:4
Eph. 3:12; 6:19
Phi. 1:20
Col. 2:15
1 Tim. 3:13
Philem. 8
Heb. 3:6; 4:16; 10:19,35
1 Joh. 2:28; 3:21; 4:17; 5:14

Thank you Pastac, for introducing the subject of 'boldness', for it has proved fruitful as a Bible Study. May God's perfect will be done in and through us, for His Name and Glory's sake.

'Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,
and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

And for me,
that utterance may be given unto me,
that I may open my mouth boldly,
to make known the mystery of the gospel,

For which I am an ambassador in bonds:
that therein I may speak boldly,
as I ought to speak.'

(Eph 6:18 -20)

'Continue in prayer,
and watch in the same with thanksgiving;
Withal praying also for us,
that God would open unto us a door of utterance,
to speak the mystery of Christ,
for which I am also in bonds:
That I may make it manifest,
as I ought to speak.

Walk in wisdom toward them that are without,
redeeming the time.
Let your speech be alway with grace,
seasoned with salt,
that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.'

(Col 4:2-6)

Another example of boldness:-

'And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.
But when the Jews saw the multitudes,
they were filled with envy,
and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul,
contradicting and blaspheming.
Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said,
"It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you:
but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life,
lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying,
'I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles,
that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.'"

The result:-

'And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad,
and glorified the word of the Lord:
and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.
And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.'

(Act 13:44-49)

These have been very good poinst but i want to go deeper in that we as believers need to walk in that same boldness we know about and not just read about. Sharing the information changes lives, sitting on it should change at the least our own. I'm saying whay are so may believers not bold or better yet why so timid or thin skinned that everything easily offends them when they can't stand on frim biblical principals when they have leaned to their own understanding on a topic and are challenged to prove their word understanding to be blibical. Boldness comes from the Holy Spirit to refut error and give assurances that we are firmly rooted in our understanding. Every believer does not believe the same thing and that is where error and confusion comes in. Yet we are not bold enough to tell a brother or sister they are in error that is not what the word teaches. Can some one expound on this with me to further this study.

Prayer in private results in boldness in public.

My hope and prayer is that the body of Christ in America
will awake with holy boldness,
a boldness content neither with silence nor mere words
but that backs up those words with action and results.

I like these quotes so I shared

Hebrews 12 speaks of believers in the Lord Jesus being able to 'come boldly to the throne of grace'.

'Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace,
that we may obtain mercy,
and find grace to help in time of need.'

(Heb 4:16)

Hello Farouk,

I love that reference in Hebrews, how wonderful it is that we can approach God's throne of grace with 'boldness', as those who have been 'accepted in the Beloved', made 'complete in Christ', presented 'Holy and without blame' because of the all-sufficient sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ on our behalf. This being all in accordance with the will and purpose of God Himself, for we are now 'Sons of God', with an inheritance for which we have been 'made mete'. We can stand before Him in the light of His presence without fear, for we are now 'without spot or blemish' in Christ Jesus our risen Lord. Not only that, but we are God's own inheritance in heavenly places in Christ Jesus - How amazing is that!!

Praise His Holy Name!

Hello there Pastac,

Before considering the error in another, I believe we have to be prepared to look first at ourselves. For it is very easy to believe we see the mote in another's eye, while the plank in our own eye goes undetected.

Also in Acts 4:29, the prayer made by Peter and John in the face of 'threatenings' was

'... And now, Lord, behold their threatenings:
and grant unto thy servants,
that with all boldness they may speak
Thy word, ...'
(Act 4:29)

* Peter and John ask for God's enabling. They along with Paul and Barnabas were Apostles, divinely equipped for the task before them, but they had to ask for 'boldness' in the face of a hostile reception. So, again, I do not believe that we should venture to tread on God's 'ground' - God's 'workmanship' in the person of another believer, without being very sure indeed that it is God's will that we do so. I believe we will know when that moment arrives, for God will give the necessary 'spirit' (of humility and grace) and the words to say. Until then I believe a still tongue and a prayerful spirit is the best method.

God is dealing with us very individually, and we are not all at the same stage of growth. We are all God's 'planting', and we should walk carefully in and around our fellow believers, these 'tender plants', which He is tending with His own hand, by His Spirit.

Hello again, Pastac,

Looking at the first of the references in the quote above, in Mark 8:32, we see our Lord Himself speaking 'boldly' or in this case the Gr. word is translated, 'openly'. He tells his disciples for the first time that He, as 'the Son of man', must 'suffer many things', 'be rejected of the elders', 'the chief priests, and 'scribes' - 'be killed', and 'after three days rise again.' Look at the disciples reaction, voiced by Peter - 'he rebuked Him'. (Matt. 16:22-26)

* The flesh will always contradict or rebuke the things of the Spirit of God.

In John 7:4, the Lord's brethren (in the flesh) urged Him to speak out boldly or 'openly', they told him to 'shew' Himself to the world, yet our Lord knew that they themselves did not believe on Him at this time. Our Lord's reply was, 'My time is not yet come'.

* The flesh will always desire 'a fair shew in the flesh' (Gal. 6:12), whereas the spirit seeks to work to God's timetable.

In verse 13 of this chapter, the people would not speak 'openly' for fear of the Jews, but later in the chapter the Lord is seen to speak 'boldly' (v. 26), His opening words being (v.16), '(John 7:16-18) 'My doctrine is not mine, but His that sent me. If any man will do His will, He shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of Myself. He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh His glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.'

* These verses are full of instruction for us aren't they?

Firstly, it was God's 'doctrine' that our Lord spoke.
Secondly, He says that if any man who sought to do the will of God, would recognize the 'doctrine' spoken to be - 'of God', therefore would know whether He sought His own glory or the glory of God the Father.

The same is true in our case, if the 'doctrine' we seek to make known is 'of God', it's truth will be seen by those who also seek to do the will of God, who will know that it is not our own glory we seek but that of our God, 'in Christ Jesus'.

* I am sure that each of the verses referenced will yield the same harvest as these two examples have, giving an insight into 'boldness of speech' and it's use.

Thank you Pastac.

Hi Pastac,

I hope you don't mind my continueing along this theme, but I would like to consider what is said in one or two of the other passages. John 10:24 is the next on the list.

'Then came the Jews round about Him,
and said unto Him,
"How long dost Thou make us to doubt?
If Thou be the Christ, tell us plainly."

Here his own countrymen had encircled Him, they were in a state of suspense, their expectations excited. For they looked for the Messiah to lead them out from under the Roman yolk, to restore the nation. He had come to them as The Shepherd of the lost sheep of the house of Israel, His sheep heard His voice, and followed Him (v.27). These who asked for 'boldness of speech', were blinded and deafened by their own expectations, their own understanding of the role Messiah should play. They did not believe for they were not His sheep (v.26). Our Lord Jesus Christ had spoken 'boldly' the words given Him of His Father, He had performed great works in His Fathers Name, yet they did not believe. He wanted to give them an eternal 'Hope' born of the spirit, they desired a satisfaction of their national expectations in the flesh.

It is the same in regard to our own witness 'in His Name' today. Boldness of speech is demanded, yet ears and eyes are blinded by expectations which are of the flesh, whereas the truth we have to impart is of the spirit.

That is such a profound set of thoughts. Take it deeper. If you had to tell someone what God said to tell them would you tell them with boldness? Could you tell them?Or would you try to make it nice and easy for them to accept. I am moved by the passage of scripture that says strong meat belongs to them who are not babes. I'm paraphrasing but in essence we have to be mature to be bold and know how to apply what the Holy Spirt is saying for us to say if anything at all. Sometimes we do get caught up in us and our thoughts we overule the Holy Spirit. I agree boldness is demanded but so is maturity and we must admit a lot in the body of Christ have mature features but not the substance or mind to go with it. Now that was a blod statement!!!

Hi Pastac,

That is a bold statement, but no one would deny it, Paul certainly would urge all of us to go on to full growth, not to remain babes 'in Christ'.

I really believe that if the Lord would have us to 'boldly go where no man has gone before', or speak to anyone in His name, He will also equip us for the task, by placing within us the desire to feed on His Word, that we may grow in grace and truth and in the knowledge of Him. He will also supply the necessary grace to listen as well as speak.

John 11:14,54

'Then said Jesus unto them plainly (boldly),
"Lazarus is dead."
(John 11:14)

Our Lord had previously shown sensitivity in speaking of Lazarus as being 'asleep', and of his intent to 'wake him out of sleep', but at the evident lack of understanding on the disciples part, He spoke 'boldly' (plainly) - 'Lazarus is dead'.

We too need at times to show sensitivity to the feelings of others, especially at times of bereavement. If we hear obvious error being spoken in regard to the state of the dead, for example: which does happen, even from the pulpit, at a funeral. I would definitely be bold and seek to approach the minister privately and tell him that he was preaching error.

'Jesus therefore walked no more openly (boldy) among the Jews;
but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness,
into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with His disciples.'
(John 11:54)

Here, the Jews were seeking to put our Lord to death, and so He sought to avoid them. The time would come when He would not seek to avoid them, but His time had not yet come.

We can, to a lesser degree, expect to suffer persecution, if we are to live 'openly', 'boldly', and speak plainly in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

'Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus
shall suffer persecution.'

(2 Tim.3:12)

We need that boldness in everyday life when we ae annoyed at someone or when we hurt we need to sometimes be bold enough and mature enough to spek. Often times we worry about the feelings of others instaed or crying loud and sparing not. I pray for boldness in each situation I encounter that God is in. And when i dont I know the difference.I'm bold enough to admit my flaws and shorcomings so I can be better. I'm trying to live what I preach about in a sincere fashion using boldness as aplatform to sya what Jesus said to say.

Hello there,

for me, it was good discovery, when I learned difference between correct boldness and wrong boldness (temerity). If we change … confuse those two, it could have had bad consequences. Temerity is serious transgression against God.

In OT, and even in NT it is punish (sometimes by death)

I know, that it is little bit off topic, but I think, that just as complement, it could be tolerated in this thread (I hope)

Some examples of wrong boldness (temerity):
OT: when folks acceded to Horeb and were burned, Kibrothhattaavah plague (when Israel ate quails) Nadab Abihu (burned), Korah Dathan Abiram (earth swallow them up), Uzahh (Perez) (fell dead)
NT: Ananias and Sapphira (fell dead), seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests (were attacked by demons)

But I think the best example of wrong boldness is one unnamed brother in Christ, he was confident that God wants to heal him, he wasn’t really ill, just had really bad eye side, so he prayed … nothing happened, so he decided that it happened (or better it is going to happen) and he thanked to God and in faith put away his glasses and crashed into first street lamp, nothing really bad, but he was stubborn, and he got this idea, that maybe he wasn’t brave in faith and confident in Lord enough, so he thought that true proof of his faith would be driving a car without glasses, and yes, he tried that and yes he crashed with his car … But then his wife found out about car, and it was the end of his confidence that God wants to heal him and all he has to do is demonstrate his faith.

Sometimes there are not that lot of steps from boldness to temerity (although, in this case it was just foolishness? I think, and price was not that high, just car, some bruises and broken pride ...

be blessed and sorry for en

Hello pastic
Things that i would see when I was in the world and I might say that persons is not cool and to say to myself stay away from them because everyone will think you are not in the cool crowd:

Now......... if I saw someone like that,i would think,i need to go and talk to them because I know how they must be feeling and it would bother me if I saw there need and I just stood there.

To me that's boldness because fear would be cast out,and love perfected.
