The word Anoint comes from the Hebrew word
mâshach meaning A primitive root; to rub with oil, that is, to anoint; by implication to consecrate; also to paint: - anoint, paint.
In the Old testament
The Lord gave specific instructions towards Moses on how to make the anointing oil, The composition of anointing oil was.
Exo 30:22 Moreover the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Exo 30:23 Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,
Exo 30:24 And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin:
Exo 30:25 And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.
Apothecary shows that the anointing oil had a fragrance to it.
The oil they used was sacred, unique and no one in Israel was allowed to make a similitude of it, but where allowed to bring the spices to make it.
No flesh would be touched it, nor any stranger was to have the anointing oil on them, and no other would be made after the composition of it. And it was to be used throughout their generations.
Exo 30:31 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations.
Exo 30:32 Upon man's flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you.
Exo 30:33 Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people.
Anointing oil would be poured on the head of Priests
Exo_29:7 Then shalt thou take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him.
Exo_28:41 And thou shalt put them upon Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him; and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office.
It was also poured on tabernacle, and the ark of the testimony, also it would be poured on the table, vessels, candlestick and his vessels, the altar of incense, altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the layer and his foot. Whatever the anointing oil touched would be considered sanctified and holy, and whatsoever toucheth these things would also be considered holy. Matterfact the word of GOD emphasizes this as MOST HOLY, not to be taken as common. Anyone that messed with it would be cut off and the priests that left the tabernacle with it, would die.
Exo 30:26 And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony,
Exo 30:27 And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense,
Exo 30:28 And the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot.
Exo 30:29 And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy.
Exo 30:30 And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office.
Exo_40:9 And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the vessels thereof: and it shall be holy.
So the anointing oil would sanctify, consecrate, consider holy anything and anyone that it was poured on. It was so holy that it was infectious, and would affect anyone or anything that touched it. We see that sacrifices would be put on the altars, because of this the sacrifices would be considered holy before the Lord.
All that the Lord considered Holy before Him would have this anointing oil poured on them
Also the anointing was to be an everlasting priesthood throughout The levites generation. This anointing oil proved that they were set apart for priesthood work and nothing else. And this anointing was proof of this
Exo_40:15 And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.
We also see of incense, with its own spices and functions. It was not to be confused with/for Anointing oil and had its own place of appliance.
Exo 30:34 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; sweet spices with pure frankincense; of each shall there be a like weight.
Exo 30:35 And thou shalt make of it incense, a perfume after the art of the perfumer, seasoned with salt, pure and holy.
Exo 30:36 And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tent of meeting, where I will meet with thee; it shall be unto you most holy.
Exo 30:37 And the incense which thou shalt make, according to the composition thereof ye shall not make for yourselves; it shall be unto thee holy for the LORD.
Exo 30:38 Whosoever shall make like unto that, to smell thereof, he shall be cut off from his people.'
That holy incense was to be poured in the tent of meeting, and considered pure and holy before the Lord.
When we go to the book of revelation we see the mention of incense as well which was offered with the prayer of the saints on the altar before the Lord
Rev 8:3 And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.
Rev 8:4 And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.
Rev 8:5 And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.
But thats' a topic for some other day
Getting back to the anointing oil we see that
When the Levites where anointed, the Lord commanded them to teach the Israelites on what to do, and what not to do. This anointing oil on them was a signature that they are totaly sold out to the work of Priesthood. And indeed the Lord had rules that the priests had to follow, like not touching strong drink when they go into the tabernacle of the congregation. They are the ones that reminded the people of what GOD wanted and what He did not want. They are the ones the Israelites would go to when they did not understand the Law, or any part of it. They are the examples to the Israelites.
So the Anointing oil came with specific instructions, instructions from the Lord towards the Priests. And the very instructions if broken, had bad consequences of death.
Lev 10:6 And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people: but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled.
Lev 10:7 And ye shall not go out from the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: for the anointing oil of the LORD is upon you. And they did according to the word of Moses.
Lev 10:8 And the LORD spake unto Aaron, saying,
Lev 10:9 Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:
Lev 10:10 And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean;
Lev 10:11 And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.
In the Light of the New Testament, God has anointed us each with specific work. And that anointing is what drives to do certain things for the Lord. That anointing is what makes us different from each other but all serving the same purpose, that is for teaching, prophecy, pastor, evangelism, and any gift that the Holy Spirit gives unto us has an anointing to it. And this anointing gives us different fragrances, and these fragrances show people what our gifts are, or ministry is.
This anointing that we have moves us to preach or teach, This anointing that is in us unctions us to do what pleases the Lord. This anointing is not used for self benefit, or to be kept sealed in the alabaster box. Its fragrance should be poured out on everyone the Lord leads us to.
1Jn_2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
More on Anointing and the anointed
1Sa_9:16 To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.
1Sa_15:1 Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD.

1Ki_1:34 And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon
- The word Anoint would be used for all of Gods people who are specified to do a certain work.
1Ki_19:16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.

Dan_9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
- The most Holy would also be anointed
Isa_10:27 And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.
- The anointing would break off all yokes that Aaron had to anything other than Priestly work. Also it can break any yokes that we have with people, the world, or friends. It can break soul ties from Fornication, and all unequal yoking with unbelievers. It does the work of making us most holy Unto GOD.
1Sa_24:6 And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD'S anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.
- We are not to touch the lords anointed, whether fallen or standing. Whether an evil spirit is influencing them and not the Holy Spirit. We touch them, we touch the apple of GODs eyes. Dont attack the man, attack the doctrine. When the bible says, prove all things it also says we shall know them by their fruits, ie the fruit of what the preach or teach. The fragrance of their teaching would show whether it is from the Holy Spirit or from Him or the world or a spirit of anti christ.
Mat_6:17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;
Mar_14:8 She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.

Luk_7:46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
- The word anoint is also used when it comes to normal oil ie applying it to smell good(like perfume). As Mary Magdalene anointed Jesus for burying and when Jesus says that when we are fasting we should anoint our heads. It does not show consecration, sanctification or anything.

Gods face shines on his anointed
Psa_89:20 I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:
The Lord personally anoints us
Psa_89:38 But thou hast cast off and abhorred, thou hast been wroth with thine anointed.
When we misuse the anointing, or do the exact opposite of What GOD wants, The Lord will not be pleased with us. A good example would be Saul
Psa_92:10 But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.
Psa 23:5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
He anoints us with fresh oil, the freshness of His Holy Spirit as much as we want. The anointing comes with a measurement, as much as we want
Psa_105:15 Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.
It is a direct command from the Lord, that whoever is anointed by the Lord is protected by Him. and He will recompense unto those who do them harm. David knew this and touched not Saul.
Psa_132:17 There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.
God will make people come to us because of the anointing, He will make it grow and it will bless GODS people wherever HE takes us.
Isa_45:1 Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;
He anoints us to subdue nations, and loose loins of kings, as well as open closed doors

Act_10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
2Co_1:21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;
2Ti_1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
It is GOD that anoints, not people but GOD. GOD through People or GOD directly. Where we see the concept of impartation.
