i love math because my dad loves it, and from a young age taught me his way of doing math, which included solving complex operations in my head. in fact, that's often how we spent road trips. so at some level, it's a sentimental bond that we share.

of course, in school i always got in trouble for not "showing my work".

one of the reasons i love my job is because it's a marriage of left brain creative-driven, exploration of the conceptual and understanding what people respond to visually and emotionally and enough logic and linear conclusion to make a geeky girl like me very happy.

however, there's another side that's all about results, and that requires understanding metrics from a statistically significant perspective. lots of people can lie with statistics, but to make good decisions you have to know how to evaluate data and separate the wheat from the chaff. and that includes a fundamental ability to understand trends, build valuable data collection into your projects and pay attention to things like sample size and cyclical considerations that can mislead.

billions of dollars are wasted upon conclusions built upon fallacy.

in the (meaningful) data, we can find absolute truth--it's black and white, unyielding and decisive.

and there's no better feeling than making decisions on that kind of stability.

the "new math" that people talk about recently in public schools isn't "new" at all, it's just a (maybe misguided) way to encourage an abstract way of thinking about numbers that is helpful.
maybe it's not such a big deal to me because (1) i don't teach K-12, and (2) i already think this way in my head, having done a lot of auditing work in the past where i needed to quickly count or add odd numbers together without using a calculator.

as i understand it, the "new math" is this:
18 + 27 = ___
18 + 27 = (20 - 2) + (30 - 3) = ___
18 + 27 = (20 + 30) - (2 + 3) = ___
18 + 27 = 50 - 5 = 45

(50 - 5) is easier for most people to compute in their head than (18 + 27).
all this "new math" is, is an attempt to get students to think that way.
the way it gets presented may be kooky, and Americans in general are fond of complaining about both math and their gov't, so it's not surprising to see it's popular to complain about a push to teach this "method" of computation. IMHO it's benign lol, not an evil attempt to stupefy the nation.
thank you for explaining that. i do the same thing.

while i didn't learn what you're explaining in the classroom, it's a close approximation of what i was taught by my dad.

and when you carry it further to, say, numbers with several decimal places, it works even better. : )

I enjoy math and the language of magnitude, relationships between figures and forms, relations between quantities expressed symbolically, etc... that it addresses and find it very useful for both everyday life and also as an aid with respect to the really big questions.

I do not; however, misuse it as the new atheists do to avoid those really big questions. What does that mean you ask? I'll let Professor Edgar Andrews answer that. --> Click to listen.

I'm imaginary too. I'm not whole number, I'm not a fraction, I'm not positive or negative, and I'm certainly not a prime. Technically I don't exist. Unless you're talking about the plane... :p

Really? You seem like you take a liking to math.
PenKnight, haha! Um. Sorry? Me, like Maths? Whatever gave you that idea? I'm very curious to know. I'm much more of a Visual Arts/Literacy/Ancient History kind of guy. I have dyslexia but my Maths abilities were more affected by it as I grew to love reading fairly early on (when I was about 7-8 years old).

Atwood, no, I'm not a Brit. I'm an Aussie.

I usually analyze people through words they use and by what tone those words are used in. I thought you may have liked math based on your posts. I was surprized that I was wrong

Cool, cool. I do love to analyse things and translate difficult/high-concept thoughts into simple to read and understand language. Maybe some of that gave you the impression I enjoy Maths. Very interesting. Thanks for letting me know. :)

You are never imaginary my friend. Now quit before I bean you over the head. Or do I need to inject you with a little of how God see's you? Hmm, come to think of it, that might be better.

He fooled me too. I thought he was more into Documentaries then fiction. He never ceases to surprise people.

Oh man. I was that shy but very smart kid during primary school that got boosted through to other programs because I was good at things like maths, and at the time, yes, I did love maths. Then high school came along and life happened, and I shifted to that teenager with her school bag on the desk, sleeping during classes while drooling on my bag. And I had that one stocky, red headed football friend who I used to copy answers off during tests because he was kind of scared of me but kind of liked me.

I don't like maths anymore, but I am good at doing large sums in my head. Sometimes I play this game where I add up the cost of several grocery products I am about to purchase before the check-out person finalises everything so I can look really cool bringing up the exact amount in cash. But that's about it, keep me away from everything else.

I enjoy pure mathematics because it makes me understand how astronomically intelligent and orderly is God who created it. :D :D :D

I love math because 1 blessing + 4 blessings = a blessed Mother's Day!

Thank you, Captain & my quiver full of blessings for loving the Lord Jesus they way you do!
I love you all sweetly. Hugs, hugs! :)
