Where in the bible does it say that "if you're not filled with the holy ghost/spirit you aren't a child of God" because I'm a bit confused. I visited a church and that's what they told me and I didn't know how to respond. Does me believing and receiving him as my personal savior not enough?

Romans 8 says: 'If any one has not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His.'

But all Christians are indwelt by the Holy Spirit when they are born again: John chapter 3. (This is nothing to do with supposed 'speaking in tongues', etc.)
 
So let me get this straight, if I don't receive the spirit and don't speak in tongues I'm not his child? Because i was under the impression that if I don't have it then my life isn't complete, but once I do it'll get better.

Believing in the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of sins is another way of saying that a person is born again, and when one is born again the Holy Spirit comes to indwell.

But I don't see how 'speaking in tongues' fits in; the Scriptures have long been complete; before they were complete there were sign gifts to confirm the Gospel in Apostolic times, but I don't believe that they are authentic for today because in the complete Bible we have sufficient authority to confirm the message of the Gospel.
 
you don't have to speak in tongues.

you don't have to manifest any kind of ecstatic sign.

you only have to believe Christ, receive Him as Lord and follow Him. He is faithful to put His spirit in you and transform you!

what He asks is for us to love Him, and if we love Him, we'll seek after Him, and do the things He says to do. He didn't say "speak in tongues" - He said "confess me before men" (Matthew 10:32)
 
Ok for a sec I felt like I was probably possessed because everyone was speaking in tongues but me and it seemed as f I was different but growing up I've heard different but I guess it comes with different denominations.

It's not just denominations: no denomination can create truth for itself. We need to be satisfied with the Bible as the Word of God, period. It's so rich and its promises to the believer in the Lord Jesus are sure.
 
Let me please join your conversation. We need to be indwelt by God to be born again of God and to be enabled to walk with our HOLY LORD. Our new life with God can have the gift of tongues or not. that is up to our Father's will, His will is different for each one of us, tongues is NOT for all Christians. Love in Christ, Hoffco

i won't say no speaking in tongues is authentic, though am sure there wouldn't be a problem finding false ones,

but i know the Bible says we are all given different gifts (1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12). it doesn't say we all speak in tongues, or that we ought to, but that we should want to have all kinds of spiritual gifts, but some more than others, and specifically prophecy more than speaking in tongues (1 Corinthians 14).

Remember we already have all out revelation now in the Bible; when 1 Cor. 14 was written, it was still the Apostolic period, however...
 
Some of the confusion arises from the different use of the term 'receive the Spirit'.When a Charasmatic/Pentecostal uses it, it means the 'Baptism of the Holy Spirit'.When a non charismatic evangelical uses the term it means being born again.When one receives Christ truly upon hearing the Gospel one is receiving the Holy Spirit.It's a separate issue of whether the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is the same or comes upon the believer at a separate time.
 
Some great men of God have never spoken in a tongue, even some who desire the gift, like John Piper, have not been given it by the Father yet, and many never do receive it,. I personally have never spoken in an unknown tongue, but I would not refuse the gift if the Spirit gave it to me. But I feel no need of it but can see how good for me it might be, but I will not seek it, my greater desire is to know the Word of God better and see more sinners converted by the power and love of God in my ministry. . I believe that there is christians who dwell on one verse to condemn others or correct, so I needed that confirmation thanks

Yea I think that's the problem I grew up Nazarene and now I'm nondenominational but I visited this Pentecostal church and felt so out of my element. So to make it simple it means the same thing just different context?
 
I believe tongues and all the gifts are for us today. But the gift of apostles is limited to being sent ones of the Church, the official office of apostles was for writing God Word, the Bible, and we have no more Words from God to be part of the Bible anymore. The perfect, or completed Word of God is not yet given to us, the Bible has unfulfilled prophecy yet to be explained by Christ Himself when He returns. But no man dare add to the Bible today.! That which is perfect and yet to come, is Christ Himself and He will interpret the uninterpreted prophecy after He has finished making it happen. Love to all, Hoffco
 
I just came upon 1 Corinthians 12 & 14 and it explains it greatly, thanks to a friend who just sent it to me. So it's a gift and not everyone can have it so I don't feel bad anymore :)
 
As you study the "baptism of the Spirit" 1 Cor, 12:12-13 and Rom.6:3-5, and the "circumcision of the Spirit" in Rom.2:29 you will see these terms are used for the new birth of the Spirit. So, all Christians have been baptized by the Spirit when born again of the Spirit. Love to all, Hoffco
 
The new birth is totally the work of the Holy Spirit and our receiving Jesus as our Savior and Lord is the result of our new birth , not the cause of our new birth. Love to all Hoffco

Never just visit a Pentecostal church without knowing what you will get yourself into. They should post a disclaimer on the front entrance (no offense intended).

Anyway the variance in worship can be drastic from one denomination to the other. Imagine going from a baptist hymn singing service right into a holy spirit filled dancing/jumping/yelling revival :)
 
I think its really simple, do you believe that Jesus Christ is Lord? Then go and be baptised of water and of the Holy Spirit.
The book of Acts shows practical examples of this throughout.
