This video , is a public road safety initiative which features transgenders or as they are termed in India, hijras to tell people to wear their seat-belts. They are even dessed up as airhostesses , (imitating Air India)

What do you think guys?
 
Wow, awesome outfit an airhostess working for Air India can wear. Sure beats the boring uniforms some other companies are using.

I think using transgenders will draw a lot of attention. Some folks will approve, some wont.
 
Yes, it's caught a lot of attention.

And for the most part it's been positive. I honestly though don't know what to think of it. I find it funny. I guess I don't see it as bad or good.


Just wanted to know how Christians would view this.
 
How is this viral? It doesn't even have an outrageous Bollywood dance sequence. ;)

Though the purpose of the initiative is good but IMO, using Hijras to send out the (safety) message is a bad choice.

Personally, I avoid running into them as much as is possible (which sometimes requires me to take a round about turn if I could spot them coming in my direction from afar). From their noisy repeated clappings, their voice modulation, fake (excess) make ups and dresses to their overall demeanour, etc, etc. I find them quite irritating and annoying. I know as a Christian, we are told to love everyone regardless of their sexual orientations but its very hard to do so when they are sooo 'deliberately' irritating.

I know Sanglina. I sympathize.

I would avoid getting into any situation with them as well.

Hijras have harassed so many people. They don't ask for money, they demand and once you refuse to give them money, they either curse or say vulgar stuff and even get violent.

I would rather they just try to lead normal lives instead of this begging and extortion. They are after all human beings who need help. A lot of it.

This ^ is sooo true and agree with you regarding them leading a normal life without begging. That way, they could have earned the sympathy of people.

I still remember an incident involving Hijras. Way back in 2003 when I was travelling with a group of friends in central India by train, they came in and started demanding money in one of the stations. Some of our friends who were already familiar with their way of extortion told us not to give any money. We didn't give and what ensued next was quite horribly unforgettable (and unforgivable). One of the Hijras started repeatedly clapping, cursing and abusing us. He didn't just stop there. He turned towards two of our male friends and exposed his private parts to them. It was quite disgusting to see how they would stoop so low to extort money from people. Its like as if we owe them money :D

Sounds like pepper spray would cure such pests. If one cussed me or hit my car I'd spray them. They need a reason to back off. Give them one.

Yes, that would have been a sensible thing to do but things are not as simple as it seems in India. Upsetting them would only bring trouble (for you) as any lay Hindu (the dominant community in India) would likely take their side in case of any confrontations. So, the wise thing to do is to avoid them. This is also one of the reasons why the Hijras adopt this unscrupulous attitude.

Many Hindus associate Hijras with the ability of possessing some sort of mystic power, and so they are feared and revered by many. During birth rituals of a new born baby or in case of a newly wed couple, some Hindu family would seek out the Hijras purposely for their blessings on the newborn and newly wed in exchange for money and gifts. Upsetting Hijras is not something a member of a Hindu family would risks doing as that would mean incurring upon oneself unwanted malevolent curses on the individual as well as on their family. So, for fear of that, many (Hindus) would rather give in to the demands of Hijras than upset them. This (superstitious) beliefs have long since empowered the Hijras to act unscrupulously in demanding and extorting money from people because they know that they can wield their 'weapon of curses' around. Sad but that's the situation in India where Hijras are concerned.
