PRAYING TO MARY AND THE SAINTSAnyone who has glanced at the newspaper has probably come across the advertisement by the Knights of Columbus in which they advertise “Prayer conversation with God, his angels and his Saints.”
The Pope prays to Mary and encourages all Catholics to do the same. In his Sunday mass in Denver in Aug.1993 John Paul II entrusted the youth and the entire world under Mary’s protection and guidance.
Can we pray to Mary or other saints as we do to God? Can some person who is at the other end of the universe hear our prayers? Isn't this something that is exclusively reserved to God? How can a saint hear hundreds or thousands of prayers at one time? No matter how great a saint they were, they are not omniscient nor can they answer our prayers (it is a known fact there are more prayers offered to Mary than to God by Catholics). This is seen by the statement by Bishop Liqouri “We often more quickly obtain what we ask by calling on the name of Mary than by invoking that of Jesus. She...is our Salvation, our Life, our Hope, our Counsel, our Refuge, our Help” (The Glories of Mary by Bishop Alphonse de Ligouri (Brooklyn: Redemptorist Fathers, pp. 254, 257).

Way I see it, sure some have taken Mary to a whole new level that I don't think even she would have liked.

However, from my experience talking to Catholics, most do not worship her but simply hold her to her rightful place as the most blessed woman in history as it was foretold.

Luke 1:28-56

[SUP]28 [/SUP]And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
[SUP]29 [/SUP]And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
[SUP]30 [/SUP]And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
[SUP]31 [/SUP]And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.
[SUP]32 [/SUP]He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
[SUP]33 [/SUP]And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
[SUP]34 [/SUP]Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
[SUP]35 [/SUP]And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
[SUP]36 [/SUP]And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
[SUP]37 [/SUP]For with God nothing shall be impossible.
[SUP]38 [/SUP]And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

[SUP]39 [/SUP]And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
[SUP]40 [/SUP]And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
[SUP]41 [/SUP]And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
[SUP]42 [/SUP]And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
[SUP]43 [/SUP]And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
[SUP]44 [/SUP]For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
[SUP]45 [/SUP]And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
[SUP]46 [/SUP]And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
[SUP]47 [/SUP]And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
[SUP]48 [/SUP]For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
[SUP]49 [/SUP]For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
[SUP]50 [/SUP]And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
[SUP]51 [/SUP]He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
[SUP]52 [/SUP]He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
[SUP]53 [/SUP]He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
[SUP]54 [/SUP]He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
[SUP]55 [/SUP]As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
[SUP]56 [/SUP]And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

Mary to some seem to be taken to just as much of the same level as they take of Jesus. Ask just about any Catholic and they'll tell you that Mary is held of high importance and some I've seen compare her with Jesus in a way that shows her as an idol. I mean if they're also going to have a rosary where most of it is the Hail Mary prayer that says something...

When Mary is seen to be an intermediary between God and man that amount to usurping what rightfully belongs to Christ alone.

We pray to Mary in the same way you would pray the court's attention. Your definition of prayer is a modern one. It means to ask reverently. We revere Mary as the most blessed woman in all of history. She is the mother of Christ, and we believe she prays without ceasing before the throne of God. We do not worship or adore her, adoration is for God alone as is worship.

How is Christ as intermediary insufficient that one needs an additional go between?

You are attempting to shade your words. Mary does not nor can she pray without ceasing before the throne of God. Mary is only a saved person like the rest of us. Mary does not possess the qualities that only God possesses.

Mary is doing what any Christian would do, she is worshipping the Lord face to face.

Catholic tradition teaches things that are not in the bible.

Why do you ask anyone to pray for you? Why should we even have prayer requests? And Roger, your anti-Catholic stance is well known. We see the angels and saints bringing prayers before the throne in Revelation. That's in the Bible. Maybe if you studied the writings of the early church instead of men like Tim LaHaye you would understand more about the Church Christ founded.

By the way, this thread is about whether we worship Mary or not, not the question of whether saints can hear our prayers.

As I already pointed out, this is a modern definition. Prayer or to pray means to ask or beg reverently. That we do, we ask reverently for the saints to pray for us before the throne. We don't worship them or adore them. We worship and adore Christ.

Brother what do you mean by modern definition? Can you give me what kind of dictionary you used ?

What is the different between pray to and as the saints/physically death to pray for us.

Pope pray to not asking Mary to pray for him.

The Pope is asking for prayers by praying to Mary. We believe the saints can hear the prayers of those on earth based on Paul's cloud of witnesses and John's description of Heaven.

As for the dictionary, I am using the definition used in my Church History class, where we went into the etymology of words such as pray. It's a legal or ritualistic word meaning to ask reverently. One will still hear the word used in both American and English courts and parliamentary systems.

Pray to Mary mean ask reverently

Pray to God mean ask reverently

What the different

2 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
