Hope you make a good purchase in clear print. The main thing is not merely to have it on the shelf but to read it and to remember its central theme is the love of the Savior.

Get a bible you won't be afraid to mark up with notes and underlining etc., not one you'll be selling on ebay in pristine condition in 25 years. :)

...and a concordance also, to make it easier to look up verses. Some Bible editions have concordances built into them.

I most likely will find one with one built in. To save on cash. I hate to say that but money times are hard.

The New Living Translation Life Application Study Bible - is that the one? I have it. It's a great Bible for those who are new to the Bible or aren't that familiar with the Christian faith. I'm now working through the NRSV Study Bible. The language is more formal but it's a very solid translation.

Also: word studies are made easier if the Bible version is fairly formal (New King James, English Standard Version, etc.) because the paraphrased or dynamic ones are more of an approximation of what the original says.

Holman Christian Standard Bible is a great translation in that it balances the word-for-word/thought-for-thought natures really well. Complete word-for-word translations (eg. ESV, NASB) are very accurate but they are also rather rigid and often don't flow well. Thought-for-thought translations (eg. The Message, The Voice) are poetic and easy to read but often sacrifice accuracy to do so. All are the Word of God, but some do a better job of revealing His Word than others.

I agree about the relative lack of accuracy of some paraphrastic versions.

They have their place but they should be read alongside other translations. Or at least, they shouldn't be your main Bible.

This is what I also meant with my comment about word studies. If the reader wants to do some study of what certain Biblical words mean and of where they occur, a paraphrased version in easy, racy language is not the best base for it.
