There’s something so tempting about antisocial delicacy of gossip. We enjoy it, even when it makes us feel guilty and ashamed. According to researchers, they say we don’t have to feel ashamed anymore, because a little gossip is healthy.
The very same researchers believe gossip is what keeps the culture going, greasing the social machine.

Professor Frank McAndrew of psychology of Knox College says “its asocial skill, not a character flaw,” It’s when you don’t do it well that you get into trouble. So why does these researchers think it’s right to gossip, A little? And go against what God says in the bible about gossip?

Well the bible is very clear that “a little gossip is unhealthy” and it’s what breaks down a community. So who is right, God or researchers?

The original word for gossip meant ‘idle talk’. This type of communication can lead to foolishly or maliciously spreading rumours or facts about another person.

Solomon said that gossip could have disastrous effects. It’s used as an intimidation tactic against God’s leaders, (Nehemiah 6: 5-8) (Psalms 41: 5-8) (3 John 1: 9-10), separates close friends (Proverbs 16: 28) betrays confidences (Proverbs 11: 13), and it perpetually fuels the embers of quarrels (Proverbs 26: 20).

As you can see that God has a zero tolerance for all forms of gossip because we can never undo the damage our untrue words have done. (Exodus 23: 1) (Psalms 101: 5) Simply put, even a little gossip is too much (and is unhealthy) because it can destroy God’s holy community (Leviticus 19: 16).

Let’s ask Jesus to help us set a guard over our lips and limit our words (Psalms 141: 3) (Proverbs 10: 19). We must also choose to associate only with people who use their words to lift up others (Proverbs 20: 19), remain busy in working and doing good things (1 Timothy 5: 13) and speak the truth to others in love.

Now you can see where that quote comes from “if you can’t say anything good, then don’t bother to say nothing at all.”

Good idea to bring up some new topics.

I think everyone gets tired of the same discussions in the Bible Forum.

But just for the record, in case someone is reading and misunderstands, none of those topics you mentioned actually qualify as gossip. Even though we're tired of hearing them, they're all doctrinal issues. (I'm sure you weren't implying they were non-doctrinal.)

Even the thing about the Pope is a doctrinal issue. People have been using scripture, and various views on prophecy, to debate the standing of the Pope for hundreds and hundreds of years. You can call it good hermeneutics, or bad hermeneutics or whatever... but it's still a doctrinal discussion. Considering him a good guy, or a bad guy, isn't a matter of gossip, it's a matter for doctrinal debate.

True, true, but keep in mind the transient nature of a lot of readers here. While we who have been around a while have heard it all before, to someone just joining it's a new discussion for them.

Besides. if Roger didn't get it the first 100 times, maybe he will on number 101 ;)

A question I have always had, where does giving information on societal issues, such as X's sister is pregnant again, and gossip fall?

Is it intention or enjoyment?

I ask because I've had the distinct problem of putting my foot right in my mouth. I'm the guy who sees a friend who was pregnant and asks how the baby is only to find out it was miscarried. (That's a true thing that happened in High School to me). I learned to avoid these issues by listening to my surroundings, listening to people about their lives, and reading body language in a conversation. I was jokingly called the "information hub" because I listened to people and they told me things. Many came to me for advice on issues, because I seemed to always be willing to listen. In the end, I became an amateur counselor. However, I heard all the gossip, and still do because of this. I never share people's information or repeat what I am told. A couple of months ago, a new acquaintance came in a friend's house balling her eyes out. When I asked what was wrong, she flatly accused me of trying to pry into her life. My friend later told me, she was apologetic because she had thought I was a gossip until some of her friends told her to ask my advice. She did, and apologized, but it was odd. I started wondering had I been a gossip by listening or was it a case of false impression.

Well like i said: There’s something so tempting about antisocial delicacy of gossip. We enjoy it, even when it makes us feel guilty and ashamed. there is a hidden deep urge to listen to gossip, and even the wanting to do it. But at that point we need to stop ourself go further. and stop our lips from saying something we may regret. but like I said also, even little gossip is unheaalthy according to God.

It goes back to what's in your heart. If you ask out of concern it is not gossip. If you ask seeking tittilation it is. She was obviously a little bent when she lashed out, having the false impression you were asking for juicy information. She apologized, move on and remember that in the end the twain met.

Now you can see where that quote comes from “if you can’t say anything good, then don’t bother to say nothing at all.”

very good idea, but the pattern of the world is gossip, talk shows, gossip is the relationship with the world, as Christ is a relationship with us, as we talk to him, the world talks about others. Good Thread,,, :)
