This thread is made for the purpose of debating if Christians can drink. Come here to debate the topic, especially if you've derailed any threads with this topic.
 
No they can not. Ok, actually i don't believe that, but i've got to start trouble here, since they start trouble everywhere else =P
 
I agree with Chica and Ugly, it is okay to consume alcohol but drunkenness and drunkards are wrong. Paul would not tell Timothy to do something that was a sin. Also why would refraining from drinking wine be limited to those in a Nazarite Vow and not all Israel if it was a sin? The O.T. was very explicit in what could be consumed, alcoholic beverages are curiously absent.

But if drinking would cause someone else to stumble, you should refrain. Also some should refrain if they feel led by The Holy Spirit.
 
I always like to refer back to the wedding where Jesus thought, now that everyone's buzzed, let's bring out the good stuff! Just kidding, but He did buy a round for the house.

Moderation is the key.
 
It's more complicated then that.

For some it should be complete alcohol abstinence and for others moderation is okay. For example, if you have a weakness with alcohol and know that you are easily tempted to fall into drunkenness, then avoid it all together. But if you are one who can drink one glass and will not fall into the temptation of drunkenness, then moderation is okay for you. If you are unsure, and have doubts about self control and alcohol, don't even try it. :)

I drink....

Water, coffee, tea, cola and my all time favourite coconut water.

Human beings are made of 70% water. So yes we need to drink... water

but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person"

You are absolutely right. We should not use our freedom if it causes another to fall.
 
the key here is more should we than can we. it comes down to the ability to be honest with oneself and let the Sprit be our guide. if you have had problems, and this applies to other things as well, in the past stay away. and as was said above be ever so careful to not cause someone else to stumble.
 
I drink alcohol in moderation. I know pastors and elders who drink - I've been in their company when they have. I've even heard a pastor make a reference to an alcohol beverage that went something like this: looking forward to going to a Xxxxxx (a professional baseball team) game and having a "certain cold beverage".

Those who drink alchohol beverages do need to keep in mind that, out of consideration, we shouldn't do so in front of people for whom it is a problem or have issues with this practice; that, like many things, the over-consumption of alcohol can have many horrific effects; and...well, i am sure that are other things to keep in mind...... :cool:
 
A line I like was from a certain sermon about a pastor who has counseled many say...

"I've never heard anyone tell me that their life has completely changed for the better because of alcohol."

So if you don't need it and don't have to drink it, why not just avoid the possibility of drunkenness and unclear thinking altogether?

I do understand some people like it for the taste etc, but just wanted to throw it out there.
 
nothing wrong with total abstinence , but to try to command it is not Biblical.

It´s seldom done. And if I ever do that, preferibly Cider or Champagne (or home-made wine I´ve made).

The funny thing! The 1st time I felt I wasn´t sober as always, I have sipped several times cold gin. That moment I started to preach to those who had their tents on Cata Bay (at the beach) and my 1st "sermon" was at 12 am... Those who felt my disturbing message only dared to say: "Shhs" because what I said was okey for what I meant to say, but I almost felt fainted for alcohol consumption.

I never drank that way.

I have not seen any evidence in the bible that expressly outlaws the imbibing of alcohol. As in most things, moderation is the best course of action. The first miracle that Jesus performed was to change water into wine for the wedding reception. This was a very high quality wine as the chief wine steward attested to. I hope that someone does not reply that what is Jesus actually did was change water into grape juice as this argument is not supported by the facts and is completely ludicrous.

I am not much of a drinker these past 25 years but tonight I believe that I will enjoy a pina colada with a friend. If that makes me a bad person so be it because I would rather be happy than right. That's the way that I roll 'em.

I have no problem drinking in moderation. I had my first Holy Communion with real port at 10 years old. I drank my first alcoholic drink (bar Holy Communion) at 18 years old - that's our legal drinking age. I've never seen the need to get drunk. I much prefer food anyway, so after one or two drinks, I stop. No worries.
