I was first introduced to The Enneagram by my Christian Counselor, and then again by my Christian Spiritual Director. It is somewhat similar to MBTI, but instead of solely talking about psychological growth, it speak also about spiritual growth, in relation to God. The other difference is that it speaks of self-development, specific keys to how to live healthier through the personality you already have, practical strategies for letting go for troubling habits. It doesn't put you in a box and leave you there, its purpose is to guide you to become aware of self, how you relate to others and to God. The roots of The Enneagram dates back many centuries, but exact origins aren't completely clear.

The 9 numbers.
1- The Reformer
2- The Helper
3- The Achiever
4- The Individualist
5- The Investigator
6- The Loyalist
7- The Enthusiast
8- The Challenger
9- The Peacemaker

To take a sample test:
Free Enneagram Test

Scroll down. Since there are only two options for answers, click the answer the applies to MOST OF YOUR LIFE, we are often not fully one or the other answer, identity isn't so cut and dry. The highest number is what your personality is the most, but because we are all unique, we are not 100% one number, or boxed, thats why your scores vary with each number.

As I mentioned in the MBTI thread, I use MBTI & Enneagram together fluidly. When looking at development, growth and relation to God as an individual, I look more towards what I have learned with the Enneagram.

If anyone is interested in books. I recommend:
*The Enneagram and Spiritual Direction by James Empereur
*The Wisdom of the enneagram: The complete guide to psychological and spiritual growth for the 9 personalities by Don Richard Riso (as mentioned on the enneagram institute's website)
*The Enneagram: A christian perspective by Richard Rohr

Disclaimer: I know there will be people trying to argue that psychology is from the devil, evil religion, etc. Please leave your comments in Streams of Consciousness and Thoughts OR MAKE YOUR OWN THREAD. I DO NOT WANT THIS THREAD TO BE BREEDING GROUND FOR CONTROVERSY.

This stuff is fake. I could tell you almost everything about personality assessments. It's all based upon archetypes. It's another form of astrology. It's junk.

We're supposed to be molded to the image of Christ, not to ourselves.

You say you don't want controversy, but you're casting stumbling blocks before brothers and sisters. I know, I've tripped on this block before.

I strongly suggest you get out of it and start allowing God to mold you instead of allowing flawed tests to tell you what your itching ears want to hear (Because the test simply puts back out whatever you put into it. You speak the result into it and it draws a picture for you. You're enlightening the machine; it's not enlightening you; further, these tests have absolutely nothing at all to do with helping you to get closer to God. That is an addition either by you or by whomever told you. But anyone here is able to perform the research to discern the purposes of these tests.)

I do not want to be harsh, because I know how it feels to want to figure yourself out. The questions: "What am I?" "What should I be doing?" "Where am I going?" "Why am I such a failure if I am so smart and have so many talents?" "Why am I so depressed?" "Why won't God tell me?!"

I mastered the art of those tests and in the end, I finally learned that there was more to me than any test of any kind could possibly tell me about me. I kept trying to reason out, "Well, I have to choose between these two options, so, which one do I really lean towards..." When there are many different kinds of situations, many different kinds of possibilities, many more kinds of personalities, and talents; in fact, I consider myself silly for even ever having thought that any of those tests could sum me up.

And that's me then. That's not even the me now that has grown even more tremendously in wisdom and talents with God even in the short time since I finally ditched that stuff.

How can any one expect that a test from the carnal minds could possibly sum up the personality of those who are brand new creatures in God, who cannot be tested, neither discerned (except because of the fruits of the Spirit of God)?

Again, I mean no harm. But your disclaimer does not trump the truth.

Good gravy! Psychology and astrology are very different fields. Sure the former can be used for evil but it's not evil in and of itself. Tarzan, that was rather rude of you. Truth needs to be informed by love.

I took the test and thought it was fun, and pretty harmless.

Thanks for being a killjoy when there needn't be one Tarzan,..

I mean,....Would you guys rather I post a quiz about which Twilight Character you most resemble? Or what your shoe style says about you? Because I could,...I was 13 once, and I'm sure I can find them again.

Agree with this completely. I just took it for fun; I didn't realize it was going to be controversial. I personally believe this is much ado about nothing.

Some of the options didn't define me either way, but I tried to go with the closest. Haha! It thinks I'm a slacker, I'm not.

Tarzan I think you posted in this thread just to create problems, if that is the goal then move on over to Bible Discussions where people nit pick about every little thing, be mean and harsh, and tell people they are going to hell if they don't believe a certain way.

I took this test and posted results in that other thread, but I got a tie between Types 4 and 7, followed closely by Type 9. Er...The Individualist, The Enthusiast, and The....uhh...oh! Peacemaker.

I found them all to be fairly accurate for me.

Because I have multiple personalities.

No but really, I'm starting to see how this stuff can be useful :)

I have to disagree with you on that one. Psychology has done nothing to improve human nature and is quite comtrary to the bible view. You can't subscribe to both.

I agree with tarzan that this is secular reasoning and has nothing to do with a Christians nature. Oh but let's talk about love rather than truth and righteousness.

I've never heard of a spiritual director. Sounds scary to me. Perhaps churches are being run like businesses now.

I agee with him. You'd be naive to think this is harmless. If this stuff can't be found in the bible then don't bother with it. Too many Christians compromise on things.

Matter of fact, this stuff should be in the bible discussion forum.

"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing." -1 Corinthians 13:1-3

What good are truth and righteousness without love?

Who are any of you to judge the method by which a person is brought closer to God, anyway?

Urgh...sorry persnickety...there's my contribution to the complete derailment of your perfectly fine thread.

Tarzan, you are entitled to your thoughts and opinions. Though I personally don't agree with you, I can see that you attempted to articulate your point in a polite manner. The reason your post is considered offensive (by me, at least) is because it is direct violation of Persnickety's request: that comments such as your be made in a separate thread. Obviously, she doesn't really have power to force you to comply, but violating her request still comes off as rather rude.

If you wish to continue discussing your beliefs on this matter, please start a new thread. I know for certain the thread would not go overlooked.

Well I'll be a bit clearer.

When there are disagreements or dissension these days it's let's agree to disagree and love each other regardless. This is fine except where it violates truth and righteousness. That's what I mean about speaking the truth in love. If it comes across as condemnation then so be it. My bible tells me I'm a sinner and therefore condemned.

Now, if you can tell me where this "Enneagram" stuff is in the bible I'll be quite to happy to rescind my comments forthwith and apologise. The books aforementioned I have no doubt probably have elements of new age teaching which is just basically pantheism. It may be overt or subtle but it'll be there. This stuff is not harmless thought it may look like it on the outside. There's a whole lot more going on under the surface. If you want to know what a Christian looks like read the bible. It's that simple.

The method of bringing people closer to God is to preach the gospel. Really simple. I don't see how a personality test is going to bring someone closer to God especially when it's based on secular, humanistic, worldly thinking patterns.

Romans 12:2

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

1 Thessalonians 5:22

Abstain from all appearance of evil.

C.S. Lewis would say about his writings "take what is helpful, disregard what is not." If it gives you a zero in the Achiever category, just do what Tarzan did (make a loud howling noise in the jungle about it) and move on. I agree with Tintin that it is not inherently evil like a 'weezy board or astrological voodoo.

P.S. Sorry Tintin, I did not see your score until after I made the above comment :)
