I...do not have a microwave. Or a blender. Or a curling iron. Or a drill. Or a toaster. Or a computer. Or a stereo.

It's pretty irritating. I keep finding myself in situations where these things would be reeeeally nice to have.

What I really miss having though...a washer and dryer.

Do you properly appreciate your gadgets (wait, what?)?
Do you have a particular appliance or tool or electronic device that you're particularly fond of?
HAS IT CHANGED YOUR LIFE?!

...so yeah, wanna tell us about it?

So then, you're Amish? :)

The appliance I hate the most is this dang computer. But all technology hates me. At times I think about going Amish!

In summer mostly, I use the blender alot for things like mango or strawberry smoothies, so that's getting more use right now.

My coffee grinder and french press really has me spoiled. French pressed coffee, real cream and a couple stevia drops beats anything that Starbucks, etc. has to offer.

I like appliances if they are practical, but some are not for my lifestyle. I get rid of things peridically in an effort to simplify my life a bit. Most of these items have been gifts: a bread maker - I much prefer to hand knead and find it therapeutic, a waffle iron - my kids and I are pancake people. If my place were larger, I might have kept some of those things. I used to have an awesome rice maker, but he moved out, so I bought a replacement at Wal-Mart. That, a deep fryer, a microwave, a crock pot, and a toaster oven are my only appliances.

Hmmm....that seems like a lot now that I write it all out. But I use them all fairly frequently, with the exception of the fryer, which I use for chicken and on asian cooking nights, won tons.

Not Amish, no :p Set up in a new place and finding I left a little too much behind, is all.

CatHerder- Crockpot!!! I hadn't missed mine until you mentioned it. Not that I like, cook...but I use a slow cooker far more often than a microwave.

I also don't have a rolling pin. Or a screw driver. Oy!!

When our dryer broke it was tough. I work once a week at a laundromat so that helped, but still dragging wet clothes to a laundromat was no fun.

Probably microwave. Reheating is a common occurrence in this house. So i'd not be too happy without ours.

Laptop i'd say, but then again that's not exactly an appliance, is it? Hmm...

my big shiny microwave broke about three weeks ago. i *almost* ran right out and bought a new one. since i'm a bit of a minimalist in general, i decided to challenge myself and see how long i could go without it. honestly, i've hardly missed it -- mostly just because of the rare occasional re-heating thing.

i'm sort of curious how long i can go without it. i never used it that much in the first place. and i certainly never cooked with it.

my favorite appliances/gadgets?

my hot water/teapot (one day i'll just spring for the hot tap) because i make tea every day.

my juicer - because i might die without kale-apple-spinich-beet-who-knows-what-else juice, right?

my vitamix - i'm a fan of the random smoothie, plus, i need it for my popsicle adventures

my vacuum sealer - because i buy a lot more cheese than a single girl really ought to. plus, i'm a big fan of freezing leftovers. oh yeah, i love my big freezer.

the rest of the gadgetry? i just can't get behind it. maybe if i was gone for 14 hours a day i'd be interested in a crock pot.

but honestly, i just love having sharp knives, a modest set of cookware/bakeware and a stove/oven that i can rely on (temp-wise). counter space. and my imagination. : )

When I was 18 my parents got me a shiny new kitchenaid mixer and some handy attachments. At first I thought it was pure generosity, but then I realized it was all a sneaky plot to get me to make more treats for them.

Well played, family. Well played.

how funny, i forgot about my KA. how often do you use yours?

well, i wasn't sure for the longest time whether i really NEEDED one, sort of my stubborn streak.

then, i stumbled upon one of the older, vintage models, that a lady had bought many years ago from the company. the body style is sort of different, but all the attachments work the same.

i was totally smitten. it's so adorable. but i use it a LOT less that i wish i did.

but he's so cute, i don't even mind. ; p

p.s. it actually has a slightly larger motor than the current models, so i always joke that when i make that concrete dining table i'm planning, i could use it then. ; p

i forgot about my power tools.

I AM SO SCATTERED TODAY!

anyway, i don't have many. cordless drill. general box o'tools, push mower (i don't have much to worry about). some general pruning and garden-y tools. and i have a chainsaw. it was something i bought for my old place (where i removed a bunch of evergreen shrubs and stuff).

i love chainsaws and their ilk. i have no idea why. but maybe it's the german in me. i just naturally crave power. ; p

For my 18th birthday, my mom sent me a Bissel carpet shampooer. With a card that said, "Welcome to womanhood!"

...I gave it to my neighbor when I moved.

Now that I have kids, who do horrible things to/on the carpet, that thing would really come in handy.

However...NOT having all these things that would make life a little easier has made me get creative with stuff. So I don't really mind not having fancy gadgets and whatnot...it's just kind of weird, in the moment I would normally use (whatever) and having to stop and come up with another way to get it done.

Gyosygirl both scares and fascinates me!

Anyway, in addition to my above post, I have an electric drill., assorted tools, an electric pencil sharpener, and a few soldering irons for stained glass work. oh, and a glue gun.

Hmmmm.
I miss having a micro, it's nice for just warming up stuff in the evenings.
I think what I use most is my water boiler (wait, here a boiler is what stores hot water for the taps.... so then, what is what you boil water in for your tea that is not a kettle? hmmmmmm .... oh the annoyance of having English as ones second language :p )

I love my little things. I still got the microwave my grandmother gave me for a birthday gift. And ever since the MP3 player was invented, It's been my source of sanity. At least I don't have to carry around a clunky CD player anymore. Those things were not made for pockets, I tell you.

Catherder says: My coffee grinder and french press really has me spoiled. French pressed coffee, real cream and a couple stevia drops beats anything that Starbucks, etc. has to offer.
I have to say Catherder is right about this. There is NOTHING better than french pressed coffee and real cream. I don't know who steve is or why whatever he's dropping in your coffee would be good, but the french press from fresh ground is beyond any coffee experience I had ever had. There's a couple of restaurants I've been to that served percolated coffee in those big silver pots with two handles and the spigot on the end? You know what i"m talking about? Anyway, french press is even better than that coffee even after a big meal. I guess I should get one. Anyway, I have a ton of tools. Something for everything really. But what i like the most is sharpening stuff. I love to sharpen chisels and have them all perfect and razor sharp and knives. I like to take a piece of paper and just wisk a knife through it. I even have a sharpening whetstone mounted on a motor that's cooled by water. I have several old buck knifes - back when bucks where bucks. I have the set of sharks - it's a set of buck knives called a mako and tiger and great white engraved and came as a set one called a yellowhorse. That one's a lousy knife but I liked the name and I have a few folding puma's and some case's. On the Puma's you can tell it's good folded metal because it takes so long to bring an edge but then it lasts forever and it has the advantage of the bone handle and then there's this bone Bowie knife that takes on that jagged swirly look after you sharpen that a samurai blade would look like.....

nobody's interested in this are you. Anyhow, french press is real good.

That's awesome. I had a friend who had a knife that could do that, and when he showed me I was in awe, and I kept asking him to do it again, and I'm pretty sure he thought I was crazy because he was wasting all this paper and I was so fascinated by it.

i looooove really sharp knives. i'm mildly ocd about my knives being super sharp.

makes all that food prep a lot more fun and efficient.
