Dealing With Your Past!

Philippians 3:12-14; 1 Timothy 1:12-17.

We can do nothing about the past except make necessary confession. And when confession is made, the Bible promises: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).


By confession, sin is placed under the cleansing blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, and when it is under the blood, it does not condemn any longer. Unless the past is dealt with, one is not prepared to live in the present nor to go on into the future. Unless the past is dealt with, it becomes a haunting memory that saps the strength of the believer so he is unable to honor Christ in his daily life. Also It don't mean that you have to go to a priest, or a clergyman or someone. It means to confess direct to God and has to come from the heart when you ask for forgiveness.



People has asked what does God do with sin. Well what God does with sin when it is confessed is explained in various passages. Isaiah 44:22 says, "I have wiped out your transgressions like a thick cloud, and your sins like a heavy mist. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you".

Hebrews 8:12 says, "FOR I WILL BE MERCIFUL TO THEIR INIQUITIES, AND I WILL REMEMBER THEIR SINS NO MORE".


Someone has said, "The present must forget the past by correction, or else the past will become a moral and spiritual liability for the future." (Quote unknown).


Consider some items that need to be forgotten:
1. failures--they keep our faith from advancing;
2. successes--they create pride (Prov. 16:18);
3. losses--they drag us down so we cannot serve the Lord the way we should;
4. grievances--they produce false attitudes (1 Cor. 13:6);
5. sorrows--God can heal all heartaches;
6. discouragements--we need to remember Christ, not disappointments, thwarted hopes and plans.


"And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more" (Heb. 10:17).
 
Brethren, I cunt not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Psa 130:4 But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.
 
Romans 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Post-cross(and resurrection), when has sin ever condemned those that are in Christ Jesus? They may feel condemnation, but such condemnation does not come from God. It comes either from their own conscience(and guilt) or from the devil (accuser of the brethren). But from a place of standing, such condemnation is not of God and no where near His heart.

8 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus

So, basically, I quoted what you wrote above because I have an issue with the doctrine that says sin confession is where condemnation is taken away (or you receive forgiveness through it) when such forgiveness is through Christ (and His blood as you have aptly stated). When does the blood cleanse us?


1 John 1:5-7King James Version (KJV)

5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

So if we walk in the light His blood cleanses us, but when do we walk in the light?


John 8:12King James Version (KJV)

12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

So, it seems that those who are in Christ, don't walk in the darkness (shall not) and so, if we are then therefore in the light, what does the verse say?

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Therefore, the blood of Christ continually cleanses us. When we sin, do we sin in the light or do we sin and step out of the light? We sin IN the light, for we are IN Christ and if we walk in the light the blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin.

So, we have come to the conclusion that sin does not have the power to condemn those that are in Christ, for a number of reasons and one of the strongest is the gift of no condemnation. "There is therefore now no condemnation for those that are in Christ Jesus." Sin has its consequences and are not to be denied, but to say that sin condemns is to say that Christ is not victorious.

"Sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under Law but Grace."

This is a wonderful instruction from God. The things of yesterday that harms our today usually comes from remembering the hurts we have had from the way others have treated us. It is like being in an auto accident and ever after watching to see if it will happen again every time you are in a car. We need forgetting, forgiving, and moving on from them.
