The Blindness of Sinners

Rev 3:17
Because you say, I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing; and know not that you are the wretched one and miserable and poor and blind and naked;

Prov 4:19
The way of the wicked is as darkness:
They do not know at what they stumble.

2 Cor 4:3-4
And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled in them who perish: in whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn upon them.

Rom 1:20b-21
that they may be without excuse; because that, knowing God, they glorified him not as God, neither gave thanks; but became vain in their reasonings, and their senseless heart was darkened.

John 1:10
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world knew him not.

John 3:19
And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil.

Eph 4:18
being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their heart;

Jer 17:9
The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it?

Man is depraved, but he is not totally depraved. Only the fallen alongside Satan are totally depraved.

as it is written: "None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one." "Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive." "The venom of asps is under their lips." "Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness." "Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known." "There is no fear of God before their eyes."
(Rom 3:10-18)

No righteousness in a single word; also all words joined are still worthless. Only in God does the single word become righteous and all words joined become profitable.

Thomist, what is your proof for that one?
We still are able to empathize and even atheists will give money to the poor. Some will become doctors to heal, hating to see people hurt. That is a sign that man is not totally depraved. Satan and his angels do not empathize, they care nothing for each other or for us.

the point is that this empathy and giving, signs of 'righteousness',
are never, and can never achieve the righteousness required by a Holy God.

only the righteousness of the Lord Jesus can suffice.

It isn't righteousness. I never made that claim. I said it is a sign that man is not totally depraved...yet.

Depravity isn't describing the inability to make what look like moral choices. It deals with the heart.
I know you want to think the best of people, but internally, even the things that look like good things are always done with wrong motive.

The Pharisees did 'good deeds' but we're rebuked for them, because their motive was not right.

Only through the Holy Spirit can we ever do good with right motive.

Total Depravity is not to be confused with 'utter depravity'. We are born dead in the spirit and we need Jesus to have life in the Holy Spirit.
